natasha, pierre & the great comet of 1812 + track edits | act one
āall of my life i spent searching the words of poets and saints and prophets and kings and now at the end all i know that iāve learned is that all that i know is i don;āt know a thing so easy to close off place the blame outside hiding in my room at night so terrified all the things i could have been but i never had the nerve life and love i donāt deserveā
Iām sure this has been done already but I had an urgent need to make sure it exists

āCan we forget that conversation ever happened?ā SURE RIGHT AFTER I TELL THE MILLIONS OF PEOPLE AND ROBOTS ON TWITTER
i legit didnāt even realize this was Lin-Manuel Miranda tweeting at first and i was appalled that anyone would be such a condescending ass to another theatregoer. AND THEN I SAW THAT IT WAS LIN-MANUEL MIRANDA AND I WAS LIKE. SIR. SIR, YOU DO NOT GO UP TO THE OSCAR WILDE OF OUR TIME AND SHITTALK THE THEATRE ARE YOU MAD

amazing how this site can go apeshit over musicals every day but never remember Telephone Wire from Fun Home when Alison Bechdel shifts betweenĀ āsay something talk to himā andĀ āsay something talk to MEā and then just says anythingĀ in such a crushed voice
okay my thoughts re: octet
undeniably fantastic music. dave malloy is such a fantastic composer and infuses his work with such creativity and humor itās delightful.
that being said, a large portion of octet feels⦠pretty uninteresting in terms of lyrical content. the entire first half says nothing i couldnāt find any newspaperās political cartoon section about phones. i guess iām more interested in exploring whyĀ social media and technology have had such horrid consequences for our social reality (esp wrt how tech companies, businesses, and govt institutions have constructed our use of the internet), rather than yet more brow-beating about how horrible it all is. we know itās horrible, dave. we live in it every day just like you. whyĀ is it the way that it is?
BUT the piece takes a turn somewhere aroundĀ āsoloā (which unfortunately ends afterĀ ābeautifulā) that actually contains profound and engaging conversations on the emotional and social impacts of social mediaās proliferation that every single one of us is forced to navigate again and again. at any rate, it feels less condemning than the first six tracks, and much less simplistic than the last (whose message seems to amount toĀ āthrow ur phones away and just live in the moment :)ā).Ā
truly though the composition and music is absolutely gorgeous and somewhat makes up for the boring content of most of the piece.
Happy cast recording day! Have some out of context Octet spoilers!
Say what you want about Hamilton but there are some RAW lines in it. The entirety of Wait For It is just!!!! Like, āDeath doesnāt discriminate between the sinners and the saints. It takes and it takes and it takes, but we keep living anyway.ā makes me FEEL things. Or, āIf thereās a reason Iām still alive, when everyone who loves me has died, then Iām willing to wait for it.ā And that one line, āI imagine death so much, it feels more like a memory.ā Just ,,,, stirs my feelings you know???
Donāt forget āWhen my prayers to God was met with indifference, I picked up a pen, I wrote my own deliveranceā like⦠damn
honestly, i still think SO MUCH about Your Obedient Servant. Like, the polite classical chords as a thin veneer of civility over the unfiltered rage. āI am slow to anger, but I⦠toe the line, when I reckon with the effects of your life on mineā āeven if i said what you think i said, you would have to cite a more specific grievance, hereās an itemized list of 30 years of disagreements.ā like, the SALT! the verbal gymnastics! the smokescreen of politeness they both insist on having! itās iconic, and salty as hell and i am living for it
*softly* Immigrants, we get the job done
YES and also from We Know thereās like a set of lines like āI kept a record of every check in my checkered history check it again against your list and see consistency/I never spent a cent that wasnāt mine, you sent the dogs after my scent thatās fineā which is so incredibly creative of Lin-Manuel Miranda to come up with!!! Thereās like three separate rhyme scemes going on at once, five different āeckā sound uses, and cent/sent/scent are all used in the same sentence. All while still keeping up with the plot and making sense!!!
When you knock me down i get the fuck back up
Can we just admit that Hamilton was really good actually and doesnāt deserve most of the hate it got
Hamilton always was good but because it became mainstream and popular people decided that it wasnāt good anymore
My favorite line is alwaysĀ āWhy do you write like youāre running out of time?ā
āā¦we have a 10-word bio in the program because there are so many people in the show. the 10 words i wrote are,Ā āthis is for all those whose shoulders i stand on.ā when i sing āgo the distanceāĀ i think about all the black men who have been enslaved, incarcerated, assassinated - i think about them. there is a hero inside all of them. itās the most empowering moment iāve ever had on stage.ā - jelani alladin on playing hercules.

not to be that dumb theatre ho but, to this day it still upsets me to see the same general shallow commentary on hamilton being rehashed because of the cringey parts of its fandom.
of course hamilton isnt a perfect musical, but many people seem to forget about the part where a puerto rican man decided to reapropriate an inspiring american narrative he discovered in a biography and gave it to dozens and dozens of other PoC (many of whose careers immensely profited from the unusual spotlight) in a usually predominantly white scene, and in the process created over 2 hours of absolute bangers after bangers which overall form a satisfying and emotional story, all of that topped with great acting and a genuine love for the arts.
