A YA romantasy writer filed suit against another writer for copyright infringement, and as is always the case with these things, she padded her claims with delusionally spurious examples. The judge issued a 160-page ruling against the plaintiff where you can tell from the start how resentful they (or whatever clerk actually did the work) are to have been forced by duty to have read the works in question.

Does anyone else feel that the 2020 reboot of Animaniacs was kinda slept-on? It was certainly looked forward to, especially by those like me who grew up on it, and people definitely seemed to enjoy it when it was out. But nowadays, nobody talks about it, and since we haven't heard anything from them since, I can only assume the ratings weren't exactly through the roof. And if that's the case, then I'm genuinely surprised. The original was one of the biggest hits of 90s TV animation, with humour so beloved that it gets referenced to this day. But the new version? It's like it was forgotten as soon as it was over, and I don't really understand why 😟

tl;dr If I had to take a guess, it's because it just wasn't very good. Also the original had a wider audience because it was on broadcast TV, whereas the reboot was only on Hulu when it first aired.

I'll admit right away that my opinion is likely biased, because I grew up with the original and loved it. When I finally did get a chance to see the reboot, I tried very hard to keep an open mind and judge the newer show on its own merits, rather than compare it to the old one. I also didn't want the creators of the new show to feel beholden to the old one; I wanted them to feel like they could do their own things too. Besides, it's not like the old show was perfect either; it was also very hit and miss as far as story concepts and animation quality.

But....well. I just....didn't like the direction they went. They channeled too much Ren and Stimpy for my liking. (The cartoon where they had to lick a diseased pigeon to cure their cuteness *still* gives me the squick to this day.) True, the old Animaniacs had gross-out humor too, like the Great Wakkorotti segments. But there was kind of a point to that: it was an irreverent contrast between "high" and "low" art that was funny, whereas parts of the reboot were gross just for the shock value and nothing else, and they relied on it way too much.

I'm not saying gross-out humor is bad. I'm just saying, that's not the show that I and a lot of old farts like me grew up with and loved.

That's why the writing matters: The writers of the old show knew how to toe the line, how to push the boundary juuuuuuust enough. The ones for the first season had some really clever moments, but for the most part didn't have that same subtlety.

However, having said that - the second season was a LOT better, and I'm glad I gave it a chance even though the first season disappointed me so much. I haven't seen the third, but judging from the episode titles it looks promising. And as I said before, there were some good moments in the first season too. (Yakko in a rap battle was a fantastic idea! And admittedly I chuckled at the title France France Revolution, that's damn clever.)

I actually do think we should discourage women from becoming housewives. Do not become financially dependent on a man. That's how a lot of women ended up dead over the years. A man gets violent suddenly and you have to choose between homelessness or potentially dying at his hand because you have an enormous gap in your resume and no degrees or certifications or anything that will help you pursue a career that will allow you to be financially independent. He owns your bank account. His name is probably the one on the car. Try and leave and he can report it stolen. Where will you go then?

Don't become a housewife.

And if you do become a housewife, take steps to protect yourself. Make sure you’re legally married, for starters; stay-at-home girlfriends have very little legal recourse to claim their partner’s assets in a breakup. Make sure your name is on the house deed/rental agreement, and have your car in your name, even if your spouse is paying for it. Have your spouse transfer money every month into an account solely in your name, so you can buy yourself things without needing permission, but also so you can save up to leave if needed.

If your spouse fights you on any of this, then don’t quit your job. The tradwife to poverty pipeline is real, and so is financial abuse.

also, many women/people experience controlling behaviour and domestic violence from their partner for the first time during pregnancy. don’t risk thinking “he’s just stressed, it’ll get better when the baby comes” because it won’t. neither you and your child will ever be safe with that man. get out as early and safely as you can
