Moving On Up
Kananeski’s new house is finished! Used a screwdriver and heat to poke the holes (from inside to out to keep any sharp bits away from the baby), and cut the taller raised part of a water bottle lid off to make a water dish. Plants are silk (green) and aquarium grade plastic (purple). Sub is 70/30 coco coir and ground sphagnum moss. And the Spoot is mad at me for making her move but I’m sure she’ll be happier in there. 😂

If you build it...
Today I’ve left Kananeski to her own devices for the most part other than a quick well check this morning. I’m still not too convinced of a deli cup’s durability, so I set out to make custom sling boxes. Three of the pixie size boxes from Walmart’s office supplies, a Phillips head screwdriver, and an aquarium plant to butcher up purchased. Fueled by candy and coffee, I went to work. Heated the screwdriver in between holes, and punched them from the inside out to keep all jagged bits away from the baby. (Possibly babies if I get my way about it.) I messed up the first lid by trying to punch without heating the metal, so that box didn’t get any side holes and will be used to house the red runners. The other two? Absolutely perfect as far as punching goes. Placement was a little cockeyed but I don’t reckon Kananeski will mind much. The plant is cut up as well. Next steps are adding the substrate, decor, and finding something to use for a tiny water dish. Maybe tomorrow.

Burrowed beauty
I’ve noticed that Kananeski continues to burrow deeper into the cup and I worry about the coco coir not holding shape. I guess I’m used to mixing it with sand for the hermit crabs. I don’t want to keep disturbing her and moving her from enclosure to enclosure. Moving into a new house sucks bad enough when you’re a human, let alone a tiny arachnid baby. I’ll just keep an eye on it for now. Honestly I’m just tickled that she’s burrowed beside the cup wall so I can still see her. And I’m already pondering which species I’ll get next. I’m starting to think tarantulas are like tattoos. You can’t stop at one.

Settling in
I checked on Kananeski this morning to find that she’s working on her first real burrow! I’m hoping this means she’s settling in and getting over the stress of traveling across the country in a paper towel. I gently marked the side of her cup with a felt pen so that I can keep track of where I last saw her. Plan is still to feed Thursday again but that could change if I see her coming out of her hole sooner.

A New House
Kananeski disappeared into her original enclosure. Something about it just felt off, so I asked for some help in the @thetarantulacollective Facebook group. So glad I did! Turns out the box I got with the sling is meant for an arboreal species and not terrestrial babies. Thanks to the awesome and helpful folks in that group, I got her situated properly in a small deli cup and she already seems happier. I put one of her B lateralis feeders in the old enclosure while she was still hiding and didn’t find it when I moved her over so I’m hoping she ate it. I’ll try to feed her again Thursday.

Kananeski’s “Gotcha Day”
My baby T Vagans arrived today. She’s so tiny!!! (And until otherwise known, the baby uses she/her pronouns.) I’m pretty sure she could fit on my thumbnail. This was the enclosure that came with her. Excitement isn’t the word! I’ve wanted a tarantula of my own for years upon years and now I finally have my Spoot baby.
