In honor of chapter 3 of "please be somewhere tonight" landing, have my belated answer to this ask about Mack freaking out end of chapter 2 as first brought up in https://www.tumblr.com/rainybelieverland/822402208217825280/enjoying-please-be-somewhere-tonight-so-so-so-much
1. Mack doesn't reciprocate because of the reasonably common cultural belief that the bottom/person doing the receiving etc. is the one who's really for real being gay, and the top is just, I don't know, looking for a warm hole. To be clear I do think Mack views Will as more than a warm hole! And I don't think he's processing this attitude in any kind of conscious way! Complicating all of this is probably also like, the whole "if Will and I fuck I might mess up our friendship and if I never suck his dick then we're not actually fucking therefore our friendship can never get fucked up QED."
If I could peer into the misty depths of that giant blockhead of his I theorize his thought/vibes process goes something like:
"Ugh I'm not getting laid and I'm so horny all the time" to
"Hmm every time I'm super horny Will is right there" to
"Will likes dick and it's not like we're ever going to date because I Don't Like Him Like That but we'd do anything for each other so this is just him helping me out like a friend" to
"AASDFKAJDFLKJGKLJGLKJ HOLY SHIT oh my GOD oh my GOD Will just pulled my soul out through my dick what do I like do, do I touch his uh do I ask him no but what if I I I I do I haha okay no that's weird and gross I can't make it weird and gross"
2. Mack loses his shit at the end because he deep down knows he cheated on Ava. Like, he's doing some complicated mental gymnastics I'm sure about how it's just bro shit and not real and when you deep it, he's doing SMITTY the favor ha ha because he likes dick u see etc. And then additionally, finding out that she cheated on him manages to cancel out the cheating in his ledger--like yeah maybe he cheated if you want to get TECHNICAL about it, GOD, but only halfway, like, HE didn't do anything (other than browbeating Will into it but you know that clearly doesn't count!!).
But when Will asks Mack whether he wants it, right when Mack feels so upset--I don't think Mack is processing any of this as conscious thought, but I'm willing to bet that it makes him feel real bad in the moment. Like, it brings to mind Mack getting his dick sucked by Ava and also Will, and it probably also brings to mind Ava sucking other guys' dicks (three other guys' dicks? MAYBE ALL AT ONCE??), and god Smitty he's feeling really sensitive right now how dare you notice that I'm rocking a half chub?
I also think this might be the first time that Will offers, vs. Mack approaching him? Like that's gotta make Mack feel some kind of way, too. I'll have to reread to be sure about this but Mack has been the aggressor most of the other times, and I feel like that's also gotta be a factor.
