The Argyle Factor
This may have happened in the scene, but I think Steve was busy internally freaking out and upset about Nancy and Jonathan, and might have thought of this later OR it might an extra reason why Steve was so heartbroken during this scene.
Steve thought Jonathan finally coming home would be the happiest day of his life, but instead its the worst day because Jonathan runs to Nancy instead of Steve and completely ignores him [unintentionally] and Steve wandered over to greet Jonathan but couldn't and chickened out.
And I'm sure just like Steve was jealous seeing Jonathan with Samantha [at the Halloween party S2], Steve is also jealous and not happy to see Argyle there. He's like 'Who is this unexplained handsome guy that came here with Jonathan? He drove across the country with Jonathan? Then they can't be 'just friends'.' And it makes it look like Jonathan IS into guys like Steve hoped, but Jonathan just isn't into Steve and that makes Steve feel worse.
Not helped afterwards when he heard that Argyle played daddy to the kids helping to take care of them and having a husband/wife relationship with Jonathan over the past how many months and raising the kids together. That was supposed to be Steve's and Jonathan's relationship! And then this random handsome guy just came in and took his place and stole Jonathan and was doing everything with him that Steve wanted to do with him. Steve was supposed to take care of Jonathan and he was the one taking care of Jonathan's kids. Steve is here taking care of the kids while Jonathan is off running around the county with handsome men...

Will tells Steve to 'run' in the trailer CONFIRMS Stonathan is on the way [Why cut out the name in the trailer version unless it was Steve?]
In the leak someone yelled: "Steve run" and people couldn't tell who it was/narrowed it down to Dustin or Will. Even though it sounded like Will that said it, everyone back then said 'lol why would it be Will'-so people ASSUMED it was Dustin.
But unfortunately for those people- In the trailer: We find out it WAS Will that screamed 'Steve run' [and they cut the name out of the trailer who Will was telling to run so why cut it out unless its Steve?] but I see ppl are ignoring that and say 'Will and Steve aren't together during that scene why would the Duffers pair them up?' But to anyone paying attention it makes perfect sense why Jonathan's brother and his love interest are teamed up in a scene.
It proves that my 200+ posts on the Stonathan Analysis were right and Stonathan is coming. What I believe is happening in this scene: Its one of these three options: Most like its the 3rd point though and this is how Jonathan finds out Steve is in love with him afterwards: 1. Will Steve and Jonathan [and possibly others ] are facing off against Vecna/an enemy-Jonathan is dead [cause he died protecting Will ofc] and when Steve is holding Jonathan and crying and is frozen on the spot [much like Lucas with Max in S4], the other people that are there run away, but Steve is staying put with Jonathan and holding him and Will tells Steve he has to run now [cause otherwise Steve will stay with Jonathan and die too].
2. Or if you want of the nice versions: Jonathan is just passed out and Steve is trying to stay with him/save him but hes taking too long/Vecna is coming at them too fast and Will is trying to protect Steve and is like "I can protect him [Jonathan] myself. Get out of here and save yourself" [cause its hard enough Will looking after himself and Jonathan without a 3rd person involved.
3. Or Steve already has Jonathan and is saving him and trying to stay with Will to help Jonathan by staying with Will so he doesn't have to face this alone and Will is telling Steve to hurry up take Jonathan and run. Basically: 'save my brother. Leave me behind don't wait for me.' All that matters to Will is keeping Jonathan safe.
________________________________
It's another 'What's the big mystery Stonathan moment' #3567. Why tf was whoever Will was yelling it to-their name was cut out of the trailer? Why hide the persons name for example, if Will is yelling to Mike or someone he's usually with? Exactly they wouldn't hide it. They would HOWEVER hide the persons name if it was Steve-because then the audience would be like 'woah why are Steve and Will teamed up?' and they'd figure out eventually that Stonathan was on the way and we all know how desperately the duffers have been trying to keep Stonathan a secret since S1E2 to surprise the audience.
It would be revealing too much before the writers are ready to share it. They keep trying to make Stonathan a 'surprise'-its not a surprise to people like us-the people who are actually paying attention to Steve's storyline and who he was really doing all of this for/ Steve's entire storyline is about being in love with Jonathan and changing for the better because of him.
We know better, BUT the Duffers 'plan' its working on the duds- definitely seems to be working with the GA-cause they're all like 'lol
"If you ask out the wrong girl no big deal... if I do it I'm the town pariah"
They made it a point for Robin to say to Steve how its different for him 'if he asks the wrong girl no big deal but if [she] does it [shes] the town pariah'. AND THEN Steve gives her this look as if he wants to say something but stops himself. As if to say 'that's not true. It's not different for me because I know exactly how that feels.' Hes in love with Jonathan and could never be with him because he'd go from being King Steve to the town pariah. He wants to tell Robin but he stops himself.
AND technically, its irrelevant information. Because Robin is right at least that if Steve asks out a GIRL and she says no, then its no big deal for him. And now is not the time to tell Robin the truth about Jonathan and his [Steve's] sexuality when they're gonna be at school in a few minutes. It's not the right time to bring it up. But you can see that its bothering him that he can't say anything to her.
AND its specifically brought in the SAME SCENE where they are talking about how Steve can't find the 'right girl'. Its deliberate for the audience to make the connection.
If not, then WHY was Steve's reaction like that? and WHY the close up of his expression? It was done deliberately.
He clearly wanted to tell her the truth like 'I do understand what you're going through', but Steve is just never ready to say it/or hear it himself let alone tell someone so he stops himself. And what would be the point of telling her now since Jonathan was gone for good and Steve being with Jonathan was never going to happen? It'd just make Steve feel worse. He did understand and wanted to argue that point 'At least the person you have feelings for isn't in love with someone else and didn't just move half way across the country before you got the courage to admit you were in love with them and now you're never going to see them again.'

They're trying to tell us something [Who is Steve describing? - 6]
It's almost like the writers were trying to signal something to us:
Jonathan: I don't want you to forget that I'm here and I'll always be here. [S4E9: 38:20 in] Steve: You're there. You've always been there. [S4E9: 26m in]
It's even in the same episode just 12 minutes apart. The Duffers were definitely trying to tell us something.
Steve NEEDS Jonathan the most right now-The Unanswered Phone Call Pt 1
When Nancy tells everyone her story about what Vecna showed her: [the end of the world]. Steve's immediate reaction to this is: "CALL THEM AGAIN." We find out he means call the Byers place again But why? It makes sense why at the end of the world, Max and all the others are worried about their friends and want to say their last goodbyes and they need them right now. But wouldn't make sense with Steve [to a non-Stonathan fan]-again he sticks out like a sore thumb.
Steve [talking about Jonathan/his family] Try 'em again. Try 'em again. Max: Rang a few times, then went to busy signal. Steve: Maybe you punched it in wrong. Try again. Max: I didn't punch it in wrong. Steve: Well, I don't know… Dustin: I think she knows how to use a phone. Steve: I'm just saying, she could've typed it in wrong. Max [tries again]: Same shit.
Steve was the one most desperate for the phone call to work and tells Max to try in the first place and then tells her AGAIN to 'try them again'. Steve was the one most desperate about getting through to the Byers more so than anyone else.
Why is that Steve's reaction to that? He wasn't close with Will, El, or Joyce. AND Steve and the others all think El lost her powers so it wasn't about that either.
So why was Steve so desperate to get ahold of the Byers? There is only ONE person left: Jonathan.
When Steve found out the world was ending his very first thought was Jonathan and that he needed to see/talk to him again and he just needed Jonathan... That was his first thought to being told they were all going to die. He just wanted and needed Jonathan right then.
S4E8-About 22m 30s into the episode
Both of them thinking of being in California with Jonathan and how nice it sounds. [Adding onto the last post]
Steve: .....End up in some beachside town in California. Spend a week parked in the sand. Learn how to surf or something.
Nancy: That sounds nice./ Steve: Yeah?/ Nancy: Yeah.
It's not until California is brought up that Nancy says this. Look at how happy they are daydreaming about the idea of being in California and being with Jonathan and how heartfelt it is when they say 'yeah'. This is what I've been saying in the other posts-Nancy is the only one that truly understands Steve and his dreams of the future because she shares the same one: being with Jonathan again.
They both know why California is so special to them: Jonathan. They may be rivals, but Nancy is the only one that understands being in love with Jonathan and how much it hurt to lose him and how nice it would be to be with him again. She is the only one who gets it.
Another Steve/Nancy parallel.
S4E8 About 40m in
California is where Steve wants to be too. Guess who just moved to California?
In the scene where Steve tells Nancy about his 6 little nuggets dream. He mentions to her how he wants to travel and Steve whos shown no interest in going to California before, despite having a pair of siblings that moved to Hawkins from California, now all of a sudden he wants to go to California.
California is where Jonathan Byers just moved to!!!!
He wants to be where Jonathan is.
And...there's so much more to this scene. It goes with a much bigger picture and is just a tiny piece of the puzzle.

Smarter than the mind flayer
Just like in s2, Steve makes a point to draw attention to himself/say something drawn out and unnecessary so he can look impressive and smart in front of Jonathan, but unlike the time in S2, this time it actually works. '...instead it made its weapon out of melted people?' He makes a good point.
He also wanted the approval of Jonathan's family and friends.
Steve rushes to go save Jonathan again
Steve is the one who notices the others are in danger in the first place because hes looking over there to make sure Jonathan is ok/hes not doing anything right then, so he immediately thinks to check on Jonathan while hes waiting/looks towards the mall/and sees the the lights are flashing.
All of them are scared for the others, but there is a reason they zeroed in on Steve's reaction specifically because his reaction is different than theirs because hes not just worried for his friends, its more severe for him because he is also worried that the person he is in love with is going to die. Steve runs to go save the love of his life [and the others].
Steve drove fast with a swollen eye putting himself at risk [before even confronting the UD] to get there. Nothing motivates you more than saving the person you're in love with. [More screencaps below cut]
"Stay here. Contact the others." [Stonathan morsel]
Translation: Steve tells Dustin to let Joyce and Hopper know that Jonathan [their son] is in danger. Steve meant contact Joyce, Hopper, and Murray, since they obviously couldn't contact Jonathan's team since they just tried.
He wanted Dustin to let Joyce and Hopper know that Jonathan and the others were in danger. So they were aware of what was happening to Jonathan and could save him, if Steve didn't succeed, so that someone ANYONE could save Jonathan [and the others] if Steve didn't win the battle with the UD. Steve did win, but that's not the point, he was preparing everything in case he didn't make it.
He wasn't expecting to survive the battle and didn't care if he did, all he cared about is that someone saved Jonathan.
Our Neverending Story [Stonathan morsel]
Just found it interesting that Steve looks at Jonathan when Dustin and Suzie are singing and shrugs and is like "Idk what the hell either." I think any of their interactions are neat and I want to mention them.
Also, again Steve's interaction with Jonathan is being hidden. Why?
It can't be anyone else hes looking at besides Jonathan since Steve, Robin, Will, Lucas, Nancy, and Jonathan are the only ones in the car and Jonathan is driving/Steve is looking towards the drivers seat.
Will is looking at Jonathan too so what was probably happening off screen was: Jonathan was glancing at them over his shoulder with a wtf expression on his face just like everyone else was making in that scene. Looking at Steve since he is the one that was holding the walkie talkie where it was coming from. And then combine that with what we see Steve doing here Steve looking back at Jonathan: 'I don't know what in the hell is going on either'.
Every season, Steve and Nancy are saving Jonathan or willing to die to protect Jonathan.
Don't you think that means something? Nancy is doing it because she is in love with Jonathan and Steve is doing the same thing as her because hes in love with Jonathan. Its not a coincidence thats its specifically Steve doing the same thing as Nancy every single time.
This is yet another parallel in the long list of parallels between them. The only season they don't protect/save him is S4 because hes not there.

Gay defender and his two gay friends
When Jonathan was on a ladder putting decorations at the top of the tree, Steve and Nancy were both staring at his ass mesmerized and when Steve couldn't help himself anymore and started to touch it, so did Nancy. Jonathan smiled and scoffed at them and gently pushed their hands away and finished with the decorations. Hows that look?' Steve and Nancy both mumbled about it looks good not taking their eyes off Jonathan's ass and Jonathan said, the decorations are up here…
