[image description: a comic starring a rhino beetle anthro character. the rhino beetle knocks on the door, and a stag beetle anthro answers.
rhino beetle: sorry i'm late!
stag beetle: you're not late at all! i'm so happy you could make it! everyone else was delayed too, so you're the first person here.
rhino: seriously?
rhino, holding up a grocery bag: oh! brought something for the potluck!
stag, looking through the bag, pulls out what looks like a huge jello cup: oh thats really nice of- is this the limited stock gourmet beetle jelly i was eyeing last week that was sold out instantly?!
they hug each other. stag beetle says, excited: Ah, you shouldn't have! that's so thoughtful! it's more fitting for dessert but... should we crack it open now?
rhino: it's your party
stag: it is... let's do it! the others better get here soon if they want a bite!
they both move to the kitchen. stag beetle: can you grab me a cutting board?
rhino: got it! (thinking: so they're going to cut it so we all get a piece? how sweet of them)
stag: thank you!
stag holds the knife over the beetle jelly container, placed on the cutting board.
rhino, thinking: a knife's a little overkill for the lid, isn't it?
stag cleaves the beetle jelly in half with one slice.
rhino stands there shocked as stag hands them one half of the container.
stag, walking away while rhino remains shocked: oh, let me get you a spoon!
there's an extra shot of them eating the jelly. rhino thinks: it is easier to get the last bits of jelly out like this... End ID]
imagining debates among anthro beetle jelly enjoyers over beetle jelly serving preferences
We were together. I forget the rest.

More blink and you miss it details from Iron Lung that I noticed!
When Simon restarts the submarine's engine, the porthole shield opens, exposing the glass. You can see God's eye in the glass!
During the start of the blood dimension vision, when Simon looks at God and says "I see you", his Eden tattoo is whole again.
There are SO many easy to miss glimpses of God's eye, and SO many shots of Simon's own eyes as well.
Right before Simon gets to 116 - 520, a shot actually shows the outside of the sub and the eel about to eat it. The shot is very dark and red. That's when the eel is split in half by the Light, and we see it fall back into the ocean during the blood dimension vision.
When Simon is all the way into the crawlspace in the engine reset scene, a shadow walks to the camera button and rips the tape off.
You can see the eel's tail in one of the pictures during the scene Simon sees them on the computer. And yeah lads Those Are Arms And Legs.
A scene that was so dark, it was only lit enough to show Simon's ghostly face looking at the sparks inside the crawlspace. It actually spooked someone behind me in the theatre.
Simon actually smiles a few times during the movie. Usually only a shadow of a smile, but he does. When he spits in the life-vest and finds out it works to activate the light. When he gains contact with the SM-8 voice. And when Ava tells him she'll come to get him.
The part of Simon's map - the one he started with, not the one he made - where 116 - 520 lead to, looked to be the actual part of it where you find the wobbly portal in the game. The really narrow tunnel.
The blood splatter across Simon's eyes returns right after the flashback hurricane of voices.
Weird Fantasy (1950) #18 written by Al Feldstein and drawn by Joe Orlando, with editor Bill Gaines
So he said it can't be a Black. So I said, "For God's sakes, Judge Murphy, that's the whole point of the Goddamn story!" So he said, "No, it can't be a Black". Bill just called him up and raised the roof, and finally they said, "Well, you gotta take the perspiration off". I had the stars glistening in the perspiration on his Black skin. Bill said, "Fuck you", and he hung up.
Al Feldstein, Tales of Terror: The EC Companion
Just to add context for those not aware of the impact of this story.
The reason it was so important for narrative purposes, was that the plot concerns the visit of the Astronaut, in his completely opaque spacesuit, to a planet populated entirely by self-aware robots (originally from Earth) who have built their own society and are petitioning to be allowed to interact with Earth again as equals.
They have a democratic government and free choice of careers etc. as the orange robot serving as guide tells the Astronaut.
The Astronaut notices that there are two different types of robot on this world; the orange ones, who are in charge, gifted access to all information and facilities. and the blue robots, who are seen as more limited in function, have less access to information and resources, and are not allowed positions of power or as wide a choice of employment opportunities. Even transportation is segregated.
The Astronaut investigates further and discovers that the blue and orange robots are actually structurally identical, there is absolutely no difference between their potential or capabilities, and it is only because the orange robots are instructed by their Educator system to consider themselves superior, that the difference exists.
The Astronaut tells the robots they are not ready for re-alignment with Earth, until they come to terms with their own unfairness, and how Earth had had to deal with this issue themselves. When that time comes, the robots will be able to ally with Earth.
Then he leaves in his spaceship, and it's only in that one final panel that we see the Astronaut is black.
Not subtle, nor should it be, but for 1950 this was a breathtakingly powerful statement, perhaps the first of it's kind in the genre.
The black character was not a caricature, or comedy relief, he was a main character in his own right, a human who "simply" was black.
When I was a professor I fucking LOVED teaching this comic. You can read the full thing here (and please read the letters to the editor at the bottom as well—including a message from Ray Bradbury).
I'm so glad people added the appropriate context here. Genuinely, this is one of the most important panels in the history of comics.
Me talking about Simon iron lung on tumblr: He is a flawed man who can be interpreted as either the repentance or the cruelty of all humanity, but more likely, the culmination of both in equal measure.

iron lung is good because on one hand it's like "hey if there was an ocean of blood and we threw a guy down there would that be fucked up or what" but also it's about humanity and the want to survive and the need to survive and what is worth the cost of a life but it's also about the inhuman treatment of criminals and where we draw the line but it's also about simon saying "it's bigger than me" during his self sacrificial act for humanity it's also about "you deserve your freedom. i'm sorry i can't give you that." it's about oh my god i love cosmic horror it's about seeing such an incredibly beautiful and artistic and human and independent film prevail it's about everything and it's about what you are when you're left at the edge of nothing. so yeah the movie is ok
