The two flew in the air next to each other. Knuckles tried to concentrate on gliding properly but couldn't help glancing at Welkin once or twice, smiling at her, just to make sure she was alright. Of course she was, as graceful as can be. He admired that about her. Welkin smiled back, blowing gusts of wind beneath her to help both of them fly.
She landed on the ground and caught knuckles's hand as he landed too. Knuckles kept a grip on her hand as they started walking forward, going nearer and nearer to a place he didn't want to go to. Another cave, infested with ghosts apparently.
That was the one disadvantage of loving someone who worked with ghosts. It's really hard to avoid them. As the sweat ran down his forehead, Knuckles started to wonder why he even agreed to go. He was getting second thoughts, when Welkin stopped walking and turned back to him, smiling.
'We've arrived. Are you ready?' she asked. A simple question, but that, along with her cute smile, was enough to make him forget any problems. For the time being, at least. He nodded, and followed her in. He looked around as they went deeper and deeper into the cave, watching out for any creepy thing lurking about. And looking for a few trinkets. He was a treasure hunter, after all.
Suddenly, Knuckles and Welkin felt something move. They both froze, knuckles in fear, and Welkin assessing their surroundings, trying to detect any creatures that couldve done that.
'...Must've been the wind..' Knuckles said akwardly, trying to cope.
'No, it wasn't.' Welkin replied. Her aerokinesis had made her hyper-aware of changes in the wind, so she knew when it was that, and when it was something else.
'Right.' He said quickly, feeling his face go red. He hoped it wouldn't show in the dark, but Welkin squeezed his hand a little bit to show that it was ok.
Her ears continued twitching, and she continued looked around. Until she looked straight ahead, and smiled. There wasn't anything there though.
'Hello..' she said softly into the dark. She used some type of device that Knuckles couldn't recognise, which seemed to allow spirits to hear her. A ghost formed in front of them, becoming more and more visible. It didn't reply. Knuckles was astonished, watching as Welkin continued talking to the ghost in such a gentle, convincing tone, it even made Knuckles want to listen to it. The ghost relaxed a bit, and eventually started replying to this calming wolf girl that was talking to it.
'Ok, I'll make the stars shine brighter!' It replied finally, and started flying up, out of the cave. Welkin waved at it as it went, while Knuckles just stared.
'Oh gaia...' he whispered, after some time. He turned to Welkin. 'How did you do that?' She shrugged. 'I guess I just.. have a way with them?' Knuckles nodded and said, 'Let's.. go back home now..'
They made their way back to the Master Emerald. It was probably after midnight by now, and Knuckles sat down at his usual place. He assumed that Welkin would go back to her burrow, but she came back with fluffy blankets and pillows.
'Can I stay here with you tonight?' she asked.
'Uhh..!!' Knuckles stuttered, he wasn't expecting this at all. 'Uhm... y-yea sure! I mean, I-I don't mind. Like, if you want-' he stopped talking as she sat down next to him and started arranging the pillows. 'Thanks..' he said.
'Oh, it's no problem at all.' She replied.
They lay down on the pillows, starring at the stars, admiring them. They held hands under the blanket, and Welkin curled up a little next to Knuckles.
Despite all his other thoughts insisting that it was impossible, he felt completely at ease. He'd felt excited, happy, energetic before. But completely relaxed? That was rarer. He couldn't remember the last time he felt that.
He snuggled closer to Welkin, very grateful for her company. Under the dim light of the stars and Master Emerald, they both drifted off to sleep.
