되다 is a verb that has A LOT of uses, I’ll just try and cover the main ones here. 

Become starting with its uses it’s worth noting how it gets conjugated. When it is followed by 어/아 it will change into either 돼 or 되어, both are correct, however 되어 seems to be used only for more formal style writing. [[ If it’s not followed by 어/아 it does not change, many Koreans seem to make this mistake so you might see it being used incorrectly sometimes.]]  

Usually when you’re first learning Korean you will see it translated as ‘to become’. 

선생님이 되고 싶어요. = I want to become a teacher. 겨울이 되면 눈이 많이 와요 = When it becomes winter it snows a lot. 

It can also be used to describe whether or not something is sufficient (often money).

만원 있으면 됩니다. = 10,000won will be enough. 

It also is part of a grammar point that is used to ask for, give or deny permission to do a certain action. If you google 어/아도 되다 and (으)면 안 되다 you can find more resources. 

여기서 사진을 찍어도 돼요?  = Can I take photos here?

아니요. 여기서 사진을 찍으면 안 돼요 = No. You cannot take photos here. 

Now it gets a little bit more complicated. In Korean there is a distinction between using 하다 and 되다. So although you can see 시작하다, 시작되다, 준비하다, 준비되다, 취직하다, 취직되다. The implied meaning differs slightly. 

Very simply; 하다 implies an ‘active’ action, i.e the subject of the sentence is the one who brought about the change. While 되다 is more passive and describes something that occurred through a series of events. 

 한국어를 배우기 시작했어요 = I started to learn Korean. 

학교가 시작됐어요. = School begins. 

음식이 다 됐어요 = The food is ready. 

You can see this difference in how you use the grammar points 게 되다 (to turn out)  vs 게 하다 (to make someone do something). 

여름 방학 때 호주에 가게 됐어요. = I went to Australia in the summer break. (Implies a slightly unexpected event or event out of the speakers direct control i.e their parents took them to Australia.) 

기다리게 해서 죄송해요. = Sorry for making you wait.
