When They Call You a Terrorist: A Black Lives Matter Memoir (2018)

Raised by a single mother in an impoverished neighborhood in Los Angeles, Patrisse Khan-Cullors experienced firsthand the prejudice and persecution Black Americans endure at the hands of law enforcement. For Patrisse, the most vulnerable people in the country are Black people. Deliberately and ruthlessly targeted by a criminal justice system serving a white privilege agenda, Black people are subjected to unjustifiable racial profiling and police brutality. In 2013, when Trayvon Martin’s killer went free, Patrisse’s outrage led her to co-found Black Lives Matter with Alicia Garza and Opal Tometi.

Condemned as terrorists and as a threat to America, these loving women founded a hashtag that birthed the movement to demand accountability from the authorities who continually turn a blind eye to the injustices inflicted upon people of Black and Brown skin.

Championing human rights in the face of violent racism, Patrisse is a survivor. She transformed her personal pain into political power, giving voice to a people suffering inequality and a movement fueled by her strength and love to tell the country―and the world―that Black Lives Matter.

Yangsze Choo is a fourth generation Malaysian of Chinese descent. Due to a childhood spent in various countries, she can eavesdrop (badly) in several languages. After graduating from Harvard University, she worked as a management consultant and at a startup before writing her first novel. THE GHOST BRIDE, set in colonial Malaya and the elaborate Chinese world of the afterlife, is about a peculiar historic custom called a spirit marriage.

Yangsze lives in California with her husband, two children, and a potential rabbit. She loves to eat and read, and often does both at the same time.

“Pauline Chase, the American actress who played Peter Pan from 1906 to 1913 in New York, recounted children’s reactions to this line: “Stern voices in front have been heard calling out in reply, ‘Serves you right!’ but all are not so hard-hearted. I remember two mites being brought round, behind the scenes because they had something they wanted to say to Captain Hook, but awe fell upon them when he shook their hands (with his hook), and they could only stare at him, and say not a word. When he had gone, however, they looked very woeful, and kept repeating ‘We wanted to tell him, we wanted to tell him,’ and they explained to me that what they wanted to tell him was that they loved him.’”

A young woman named Sarah Everard was abducted and murdered by a cop while walking home

Tonight women planned to hold a peaceful vigil in her memory using the hashtags #reclaimthenight and #reclaimthestreets

Police responded by dragging women away and arresting them using excessive force and destroying flowers and items left as a memorial for Sarah

The race is 22 miles long. It is shorter than a standard human marathon. This is so that it is fair to the horses. A typical marathon is 26 miles long. A healthy distance for a horse to undertake in a single day for the purpose of travel is between 20 and 30 miles, but only if they walk at least part of the way. The years a human runner has won the race, the weather has been hot, as heat also favors human runners.

Interestingly, if the race is only ten to fifteen meters, 30 - 45 feet, a human can also win against a horse, which takes longer than a human to get up to full speed.

Day by day, it is not faster to ride than to walk. It is easier, but it is not, especially in rough terrain, faster. Horses are much faster over short distances, but can’t beat a bunch of guys on a fast march for a full day travel.

And if you are in bad terrain where your horse or mule can’t actually go faster than a walk, then it takes about the same amount of time. In fact, a string of pack mules moves at about 3 miles per hour, which is the same speed or even slightly slower than a human walking.

It’s still easier on you to ride, though.

Do I speak from experience?

Every time a pig kills an unarmed innocent person and has any kind of trial or review, the defense is always that he’s a good man, he was doing his job perfectly, the entire institution of the police stands behind him and his actions, and the murder of innocent people is an unavoidable consequence of the existence of police, if not an intentional aspect of their job description. They literally tell everyone that innocent people will continue to be killed as long as cops exist and there’s nothing that can be done to stop them, and then they expect you to be okay with that
