Sorry but the idea that Jonathan is somehow a âbad boyfriendâ because he occasionally doubts Nancy is absurd to me. Nancy is not an infallible girlboss; she makes impulsive decisions that donât always lead to good outcomes. And he calls her out on it! And when Jonathan makes his own mistakes, she does the same!

Honestly, even during her less-traumatic moments in season 5, Kali still had to deal with Hopperâs bullshit, take part in the Exposition Press Conference where she didnât know 90% of the people there, and then had to awkwardly stand in the background while a kid she also doesnât know tearfully comes out to his family and friends. She never even got a break.
I keep seeing people framing Robin saying âwhat if we could just combineâ to Steve as some kind of reasoning that they should be living together in the epilogue and. Iâm sorry. But that line is about how they have opposite problems in their love lives. Robin knows what she wants but feels she is unable to obtain it, while Steve has much more freedom but doesnât understand what he wants at that moment.
Their friendship is incredibly sweet, do not get me wrong. But this idea that they cannot live without the other in direct proximity to them at all times has always felt like a massive exaggeration to me. Still love âem though.

Please correct me if Iâm totally off-base about this, but, like . . . Do we ever learn Lucasâs music taste in the show directly?
Because basically every other prominent character has at least one artist/genre they enjoy, whether from visual clues, references, or straight up playing them. Hopper likes Jim Croce, Mike likes Butthole Surfers, Dustin likes Weird Al, Max likes Madonna and Kate Bush, Will likes The Clash and The Cure, etc. etc. etc.
But I donât remember Lucas getting any kind of clues like that. He does do the Ghostbusters theme with the rest of the kids to greet Will in S2, and he respects Kate Bush after she âsaves Maxâs lifeâ, but I wouldnât say those are individual to him. And I know we can make inferences about his taste based on the time period, but the fact that heâs one of the only major characters without a shown taste in music really, really sucks.

A weirdly common take I've seen float around is the notion that jonathan was the one at fault for the whole dumbass macho competition plotline and that he was just ''being insecure''. Like why are we acting like steve wasn't coming onto Nancy the whole season? I got into the fandom earlier this year, though I've been a fan for way longer, it was just extremely jarring to see
The aspect of that post that bothers me most is the comment suggesting Robin would go around purposefully singeing Jonathan (& Nancy possibly?) with lit cigarettes? HUH? (Also, the whole suggestion in the post itself that Robin would hold a grudge against Jonathan specifically for beating up Steve four years ago when Robin herself thought Steve was a total asshole... lmao. Robin would find out that what prompted that fight was Steve calling Jonathan a homophobic slur and suggesting it's not a surprise that his kid brother died because his whole family is full of screw ups and tell Jonathan that he should have hit Steve harder. Like genuinely what show are you people watching?)
ANYWAY.
To answer your question, most of this fandom takes everything Steve does and says in the absolute best faith possible while affording Jonathan absolutely zero benefit of the doubt on anything ever and getting angry at him for so much as daring to breathe the same air as King Steve. So when Steve says to Jonathan in the Abyss that he gave up on pursuing Nancy a long time ago and has only been trying to be her friend this whole time, people take that at 100% face value, despite the onscreen evidence of--oh yeah--Steve's behavior every time he's been around Nancy and Jonathan for the past two seasons pointing to the contrary. Jonathan is now the bad guy because he dares to find Steve rude and evasive and inappropriate in his behavior towards Nancy and himself. The tags on that post imply op thinks Steve has every right to hate Jonathan for "stealing his girlfriend" (Nancy is a person not a prize) and shutting down Steve's super kindhearted well meaning gesture of bringing his friend Nancy who he just wants to be a friend and with whom he definitely has no ulterior motives flowers in the hospital. As such, Jonathan is clearly immature and deeply insecure and a loser and Robin should jump in to burn him with cigarettes, apparently.
