Plot: [ set in Season Five ] When you find out you might be pregnant with Steve’s baby, you panic big time, and try to go about the path to figuring out if you really are or not
|| AUTHOR’S NOTE sorry if that plot is kinda stupid, I started this one-shot after watching season 5 volume 1 and I put so much time and effort into it. Also sorry if this sucks in any way this is my first time posting a story on this account. ||
(Also I just realized so many have done this trope before with Steve sorry if its like just repetitive but I love me some pregnancy tropes)
ABOUT A YEAR AGO, you fell for Steve Harrington, all around the same time they lost to Vecna. Your first kiss shared with him was out of fear and adrenaline from when he saved your life in the Upside Down and once they lost people… It was clear you wanted to be with Steve forever when you shared your feelings, and he was so happy to learn how you felt that he pulled you into a kiss and told you he would love to be your boyfriend.
After that, the quarantine fell on the rest of the residents who didn’t leave Hawkins, trapping them inside a wall guarded by the military.
It was stressful and you found yourself distracting yourself entirely by using your relationship with Steve. It was a healthier distraction than most. Their love life went from a slow start to a fast-paced relationship.
Maybe you were falling in love with Steve.
Which is why you slept with him a few months after the quarantine and it was your first time; it definitely gave you anxiety about it but Steve was caring, loving, and amazing at how he loved you.
After that, they kept doing it, almost as the biggest distraction of them all.
Plus you both loved doing it so why not?
What could go wrong?
YOU THREW UP FOR THE FOURTH TIME THIS WEEK.
“Oh god, oh god, oh god, oh god—“
“Robin,” you groan flushing the toilet before sitting down on the toilet seat as you look at your close friend Robin Buckley, “you’re acting like you're the one who’s throwing up right now or something.”
“I’m sorry, you’re right,” Robin frowns, “but you… You could be…”
“Sick?”
“Y/N—“
“I’m joking,” you sigh, “I could be… Pregnant,” your voice wavers quietly as you worry Steve could come home at any point even though he has to man the Radio Tower by himself that day.
Robin nods, “yeah… That. We need to be sure but this town is so low on supplies, I’m not sure if there would be any tests that we can trust left.”
Your leg shakes as you frown getting emotional, “fuck… Fuck! Robin,” you look at her desperately, “what am I supposed to do?”
“I…” She then trails off as she looks to be in thought, “I have an idea,” she rushes out of the bathroom.
You first wash out your mouth before following her into the kitchen where Robin is staring at the calendar with a smile.
“What is it?”
“Murray is coming to drop off supplies soon,” she explains, “you can just ask him to bring you one next time he comes by.”
“And how soon is that?” You questions.
“It varies which yeah is bad news but hey, it’ll be okay,” Robin reassures touching your arms, “we’ll figure it out. In the meantime, do you want to tell Steve?”
You move back from Robin’s touch, shaking your head, “no. Not… Not yet.”
She frowns, “are you sure? I know it's not my choice but you know he would be so supportive, he loves you so much. Maybe too much. And this would change everything—“
“Exactly!” You cut her off sharply, “everything is going to change if I am pregnant and Steve… He’s amazing, I love him, I’m in love with him,” Robin smiles happily, “but he will treat me like actual glass if I tell him now.”
“But… You know if you end up with a positive test; you’ll have to tell him one way or another,” Robin points out, “the only difference between telling him now or waiting to see if you are pregnant is: Lack of support.”
“I have you,” you whisper looking down.
She nods, “and you always will, I am already getting ready to be the godmother,” she half-jokes.
You roll your eyes playfully, “ha ha,” you said in an unenthusiastic tone.
“Sorry, just dreaming,” she smiles nervously, “since we have to wait for Murray; why don’t we go watch a movie? Your choice.”
You smile, “okay, fine, but I want popcorn.”
Robin smirks, “deal, but I thought you didn’t like popcorn?”
“I don’t know, I just felt the need for popcorn, sue me,” you joke back.
She raised her hands and went to sit on the couch while you picked a movie.
“HERE IS YOUR ORDER UP FROM SANTA MURRAY,” Murray announces as he opens his truck for them.
Jonathan, Nancy, Robin, Steve, and you all stood watching him bring out the requested items that he could smuggle into the highly quarantined area; not everything on the list was picked up but he tried to get as much as he could.
He lists off each item that he hands to them, “and that is it! I hope everyone’s satisfied, if not, don’t tell me about it,” he sternly says closing the back of the truck.
The others tell him thank you and Nancy asks him about any options for a Crawl but he unfortunately says there are none this time but maybe next time.
Murray headed to the front door when you stopped him.
You took the opportunity to ask Murray for a pregnancy test while Robin distracted Steve.
“Murray?”
He turns to look at you, not expecting you to come to him alone with whatever request that’s about to be asked.
“If it isn’t little miss doesn’t talk much?” He comments, “is this about the lack of some of the supplies on the list or—“
“No, no, that’s not,” you sigh, “I have an essential request for you to get back maybe sooner than later?”
He squints his eyes, “do you not realize how hard it is to get into this area? How much of a risk is it? No—“
“Murray—“
“The answer is no,” he turns to go to the driver’s seat again when…
“Please,” your voice cracks as you feel tears fill your eyes. Murray stops and turns to look back at you noticing how vulnerable you are being, “I think I’m pregnant…”
Murray’s eyes widen.
“Does your boyfriend know?” He asked in a hushed tone.
You shook your head, “not yet…”
“You will tell him, right—“
“Yeah, as soon as it comes back positive,” you state.
He sighs and nods, “you know what… I hear your request and yes, I will bring you a test as soon as I can. Okay?”
You smile, “thank you, Murray.”
That’s when Steve swoops in and hugs you from behind and kisses your cheek, “you wandered off.”
“I was asking Murray for, uh, those bopper things you like,” you lie.
He raised his eyebrows at Murray who smiled and nodded, “peanut butter boppers?” Steve asked, slightly excited about the idea, “you’d be the best if you could do that, seriously man, the best.”
He laughs, “well I am Santa Murray after all, I’ll see what I can do,” he told them before he salutes them, “see you two next time,” he walks over and opens his driver’s door and gets into his truck.
Steve and you back up as he drives away.
He leans closer, holding you by the waist, “I was thinking you and I could go to Enzo’s tonight?”
“Enzo’s?” You look at him, “where are you getting that kind of money?”
“It’s not that expensive,” he lies.
“Steve,” you laugh pulling out of his arms to face him, “you know as well as I do that since the quarantine Enzo’s and many businesses like it have become even more expensive.”
It was all because businesses have been shutting down due to the quarantine and the lack of shipments. So everything left, including Enzo’s, had upped their prices.
“Hey, I got it, okay?” He took your hands in his, “trust me, I can take care of anything that happens.”
You smile and try not to think about how that could become more real with the chance of a baby on the way.
YOU ENDED UP AGREEING TO THE DATE IDEA at Enzo’s after a lot of love and special treatment from Steve. You hoped it’d go well but you didn’t count on everything being different affecting you that night.
So when you guys got to Enzo’s and walked in, you were hit with a smell of meat, and you were so nauseous you tried to play it off, but Steve read you easily and knew something was wrong.
He tried to fix whatever was wrong by asking politely if he could change anything.
You knew the only way for the nausea to stop was for you two to leave the restaurant that Steve just spent a lot of money on so you decided to try to power through.
But as they served the table next to you a steak, you had to go throw up, so you got up and didn’t answer Steve’s questions before leaving the restaurant.
Steve followed you after paying and found you throwing up by the curb…
“Y/N?” He rushes over to you, he pulls your hair back, and rubs your back comfortingly, “let it out, it’s okay.”
Once you stopped vomiting, you two got into his car and you looked out the window, hoping he wouldn’t put two and two together.
“I should have known…”
You frown, “I’m sorry?” You ask looking over at him.
“You’ve been acting off, I just… I didn’t realize it was because of being sick,” he sighs, “I’m really sorry I didn’t catch on.”
Tears fill your eyes, you knew there was no reason to cry right now but your hormones were a bitch.
“Hey,” Steve reached and caressed your face, you closed your eyes tears flooding down your face, “why are you crying?”
“Steve… I can’t…”
“You can’t what?”
“I need to go home, I want to go home,” you clarify.
He nods, “okay then,” he moves back to sit in his seat, he then buckles up, “we’ll be home soon, I promise.”
You turn your face to look out the window, you lean your head on your hand, and you sniffle trying to calm down because why are you even crying?
It was already irritating how you didn’t need a test at this point… But maybe… Hopefully, you’re just about to start your period.
That’s… Possible, yeah, it’s possible, you thought to yourself with hope that you were right but deep down a part of you started to do the math on your last period.
After about ten minutes and you two were now parked at the Harrington house but neither got out nor spoke to each other until Steve broke the silence.
“Hey… Y/N?”
You dry your eyes as you look at him, “yeah?”
“I love you,” Steve states.
You smile, a part of you feeling emotional again but you fought the urge to cry, “I love you too. I’m just sorry about Enzo’s… You spent so much money—“
“Don’t blame yourself, you’re sick, and I was the dingus who didn’t realize,” he tells you.
“I was the one who didn’t tell you so… That’s on me,” you sigh, “I am so ready to get out of this dress and go lie down on the couch… Maybe snuggle up with you and watch something good.”
He smiles, “for you,” he unbuckles, “I’d do anything, especially watch one of your nerdy movies.”
“Star Wars is an amazing series—“
“Whatever you say, nerd,” he winks at you before opening the door and getting out.
You smile and roll your eyes, opening your door, and getting out.
IT TOOK A WEEK FOR MURRAY TO COME BACK.
That week was hell. The nausea never left, and on top of it, you could barely stay awake… So exhausted that Steve started noticing how often you’d been napping lately. Thankfully, he didn’t question it. Other things, though, he did.
You were suddenly running to the bathroom far too often. At first, he brushed it off, but you could tell the suspicion was there. Then there was your heightened sense of smell like Steve’s car. It had never bothered you before, but now every time you got in, it hit you so hard you wondered if he’d left food somewhere. The look he gave you when you asked told you he hadn’t.
Everything felt like proof, like your body was already answering the question you were too afraid to ask. Still, you didn’t know for sure.
By the time that Murray came back, Steve was more than suspicious, and you were trying and failing not to look pregnant.
You spent most of your time at the radio tower with Robin and Steve while they ran their show, doing their best to keep what was left of Hawkins sane. And honestly, it worked especially because of Robin, whose humor had become a lifeline for the quarantined town. You never officially took over her role, but whenever Steve needed a break or you just needed something to keep your hands busy, you’d jump in to do sound effects. Somewhere along the way, it became a small but meaningful bonding ritual for the three of you and, more importantly, a distraction from the looming truth of your possible pregnancy.
You sat in the back of the room with a book in your lap and a warm drink cradled in your hands, the heat settling your stomach just enough to let you focus. Lately, stillness helps more than anything.
When the show cut out mid-sentence, you looked up as Steve and Robin bolted from the booth. You stayed seated a moment longer than you meant to, waiting for the slight dizziness to pass before standing.
“What happened?” you asked, steady once more.
“I think Robin officially pissed off the military,” Steve suggests his theory.
You shook your head, “I don’t think so, I was listening while I read; it sounded like she was doing all the right things to keep them off of us.”
Robin gestures at you while saying, “thank you, Y/N!”
“No problem,” you shifted in place as they tried to fix it.
When Steve finally grabbed the walkie to call for Dustin’s experience, you and Robin exchanged a look. The same thought passes between you.
Dustin had never really come back from Eddie’s death. The grief clung to him, sharpening his tone when his voice crackled through the walkie, aimed most often at Steve.
You felt Steve tense beside you. Like usual, later, in bed, he would admit how much it hurt.
Steve had always been protective of his little nuggets (his word for the Hawkins kids, even now that most of them were teenagers) he worried about all of them, but especially Dustin, his favorite even if he’d never admit it.
So when the kid genius began to change, Steve noticed immediately. He worried more than he let on, tried to reach out, tried to offer comfort but Dustin wanted no part of it.
That was when Steve first started telling you about it. After that, Dustin only seemed to drift further away, and every time Steve tried to pull him back in, it ended in an argument.
Robin bit back a sigh as without thinking, you adjusted your grip on the mug, pulling it closer to your middle your frown deepening listening to Dustin snap at Steve before turning off his walkie.
Steve wasn’t happy as he turned his walkie off as well, he looked at them, his jaw tight with irritation and slight worry, “you hear that tone?” He asked them, “you hear that right?”
Robin shrugs as you walk over, “hey, he’ll come back… Just give him time to grieve.”
Steve doesn’t respond for a different number of reasons as he looks at Robin, the two of them making a plan to fix the radio tower.
YOU WERE ALONE WITH ROBIN finally as Steve was getting a few things from his van. You sat down on Steve’s seat as Robin tried to tinker with the booth hoping a miracle would happen so that they wouldn’t have to go to the tower again.
Robin decides to ask, “hey,” she nudges you gently, “how are you doing?”
“It sucks,” you admit quietly as if Steve could hear you from outside, “even though I have no concrete proof; I feel like I’m just being an idiot ignoring the facts.”
“What facts—“
“I can’t stop the puking, I can’t be around cooked meat, Steve’s Beamer makes me want to hurl, my back hurts all the time, I feel so many emotions too and that's not even all of it,” you sigh deeply, your hand wandering to your stomach, “I… Do I even need the test?”
Robin looks down, “I… I mean,” she shakes her head, “the facts are hard to ignore… But hey, you wanna be sure, right? Murray should be back sometime soon.”
“Sometime soon is so reassuring…”
Robin smiles sympathetically when she notices Steve walking into the room next to the booth, his hands full.
“Steve,” you look over, not immediately standing to avoid your head spinning, Robin rushes over to help and you take a second before joining.
“Nancy and Jonathan are on their way to the tower,” Steve states once you join them, “I was thinking we should do this part after we fix the tower’s signal.”
“Good idea,” his best friend agrees as she glances at you with a silent look of worry that Steve caught.
“What—“ Steve looks between you, also noticing the familiar guilty look that you’ve had going on for the period of time you’ve believed you were pregnant for, not that he knew that, “okay, that’s it, what’s going on?”
“Huh?” Robin tries to keep the secret.
You look to the side as he furrows his eyebrows, “it’s nothing,” you finally speak in a quiet voice.
He shakes his head, “yeah, I’d believe it’s nothing if you two weren’t acting so weird.”
“Weird?” Robin asked, “we’re always weird what are you talking about—“
“Okay, yeah, you’re weird, Robin,” he groans, “but you’re acting weirder than usual, and don’t get me started on Y/N,” he looks at you with suspicion sown into his gaze but also a slight bit of a kind of worry that comes from someone in love.
“Steve, I… I promise it’s not anything bad,” you try to explain without explaining.
Steve sighs, “Robin? Can you give us some time to talk? Alone?”
Robin nods, “yeah! Of course, yeah. Time for serious couple talk time, I’ll be in the car,” she rambles on a bit as she walks down the stairs to leave and wait in Steve’s Beamer.
Once alone, you felt nauseous from the pressure of Steve’s gaze, he knew something was up, and she didn’t want him to either find out on his own or assume the totally wrong thing so she had a choice now.
Tell him the truth or keep the secret longer?
Honestly, in that moment, the pros and cons of telling him that you had been going through in your head over and over for a couple of weeks now had become less and less cons by this moment that… You knew there was only one option.
You just wished you had a test to confirm it.
“Y/N, you gotta talk to me,” his voice was gentle but pained, he steps forward taking your hands in his, “I love you but you’re pulling away… You've got to tell me why so that I can fix it.”
“Oh, Steve,” you reach and caress his face, “you can’t fix what’s wrong.”
“I can try,” he states.
You laugh a bit, “a part of me wishes we could try to fix it… Another part…” You take a deep breath, “wants this.”
“Wants what exactly?” He asked, having difficulty following.
You hesitate, afraid to tell the truth, but it was time…. Especially with the proof piling up before you even get the test smuggled in.
Your hand moves to your stomach, you don’t even meet Steve’s gaze, afraid to see what he thinks.
Steve on the other hand…
Steve stares at your hand on your stomach, a part of him not understanding immediately but then it clicked. Everything he’s watched you go through lately— from random spells of nausea and vomiting to how many naps you’ve been taking when you usually hate naps… Then the obvious one finishes the confirmation: The smell of meat repels you. His mother always talked about how when she was pregnant with him; she couldn’t eat meat or even be in the house when it was cooked.
“Holy shit…”
You look at him, tears filling your eyes as he is in shock and realization.
“You’re pregnant?” He asked.
You nod, “I… I think so. We’re trying to smuggle in a pregnancy test.”
“We?” He asked but then answered his own question before you could, “Robin.”
“Yeah,” you look down.
“Smuggling it in?” He asked as he pieced together everything he didn’t know.
“I asked Murray,” you admit.
He pauses, “wait so you’ve known since Murray three weeks ago?”
“I didn’t know for sure then plus the symptoms were less back then,” you admit, “I should have told you. I get that now. But…” Tears fell, “I don’t want things to change.”
Steve’s eyes soften as he takes your hand in his, “if you are pregnant,” you look down, “then things are gonna change no matter what especially if there is a little nugget growing in there,” he gestures to your stomach, “but hear me say this,” he swept his arm around your waist, moving you closer to him, “baby or no baby. I’m here and I always will be. Because I love you.”
Tears began to fall as you smiled and kissed him.
He smiles into the kiss his arms gently wrapping around your waist; his kiss deepens and you try to keep up with his moves.
That’s when Robin rushes in, “guys— Oh, sorry! I didn’t mean to interrupt,” she says covering her eyes even though you two had moved away from each other when she came in.
“Robin,” Steve gave her a look as you laughed, “you can look, we stopped kissing.”
“Is that what you two call that makeout session?” She smirks.
You blush as he rolls his eyes, “I told him,” you blurt out knowing that was probably gonna come up.
Robin looks between you two, “you told him about the pregnancy?”
They both nod as she nods as well, “cool, cool, cool. That just means that you have more of the support you need.”
Steve glances at you with an endearing look, “I wish you had gone to me and not Robin, no offense, but still.”
Robin raised her hands in surrender, “none taken.”
“I know… I’m sorry, Steve, I really am,” you express.
“It’s okay,” he kisses your temple before leaning his forehead against yours, “we should get going before Nance and Jonathan call us up and scold us for being late.”
YOU GUYS ARRIVE AT THE TOWER as Steve took the lead to fix it and Jonathan offered his help but Steve, being himself, said he had it handled.
You watched Steve with worry as he turned off the power to the tower so that he didn’t fry— Something that Robin had to remind him of. Making you feel anxious for his life… If he were to fall and die… You couldn’t handle that.
You then rush forward, you grab his arm before he can climb, “Y/N—“
“Don’t.”
He furrows his brows, “what’s wrong?” He asked gently.
“I’m scared… I— I don’t want to lose you,” you whisper to him, emotion sown into your voice, “don’t climb this tower. Please... Please,” you pleaded, “for me?”
Steve looks over at Jonathan who wanted to help so he knew that sending him would be the other option.
Usually, he prefers to do the dangerous stuff but for you and most likely his future child he nods.
“Okay,” he agrees, kissing your hand and looking over at the others, “why don’t we ask Jonathan?”
“I like that plan,” you smile.
You two go to the others and Steve told Jonathan that he should do it this time. The sudden change had the couple looking at you two with suspicion while Robin immediately understood it was because of the possible pregnancy.
“I can do it if you don’t want to,” Robin offers trying to change the subject from their suspicion.
Jonathan shook his head stating, “no, no, I got it,” he took off his jacket and headed toward the tower.
While Jonathan climbed.
Nancy kept glancing at you who sat in the car while Steve stood beside your car door talking to you quietly making you laugh lightly.
“Don’t worry about it,” Robin suggests.
Nancy looks at her, “huh?”
“It’s just Y/N wanting him to stay with her,” the radio show host points out, “nothing too serious.”
She raised an eyebrow, not quite believing her, “sure.”
Before Jonathan could get to the top; that’s when you four spot Murray’s truck driving over.
“Oh shit.”
“SANTA MURRAY IS BACK!”
Murray delivers each item he brought to each person who asked while you felt so nervous and slightly nauseous waiting for your turn.
Then Murray clears his throat, “and this one,” he said, not looking at anyone in particular, “is for determining whether recent life choices have had permanent consequences.”
He hands you a box of lightbulbs.
Jonathan and Nancy gave him strange looks while Robin tried not to laugh and Steve gave you a sympathetic look.
You smile, “thanks Murray.”
That’s when Murray explains that there is finally an opportunity for a crawl.
But while the others try to focus on that— You AND Steve cannot focus at all. Nope. Your eyes are glued to the box of lightbulbs knowing deep down that the test was inside.
Steve then grabs your hand and holds it.
You look at him, feeling much better knowing that he is finally aware of the situation and it won’t be a big conversation you two would have had about the test (if your instincts are right) being positive.
At least you have him by your side.
YOU TWO HEADED STRAIGHT HOME before the Crawl as you sat in the bathroom holding the test that Murray gave you while Steve leaned over and looked at the box that you took the test out of.
“Okay,” he said quietly, “um… directions…” He read slower than usual, like he didn’t trust himself to skim it for the sake of you and the possible baby. “Remove test from wrapper,” he started, glancing up at you before looking back down, “hold the absorbent tip in the urine stream for five seconds or,” he paused, squinting, “dip it in a cup for… Ten.” He nodded to himself, like that part made sense.
You smile at him endearingly listening to him read off what you were too scared to do alone or even with only Robin; this truly was the better option.
“Then you put the cap back on and place it on a flat surface and we wait.” He continues, “two minutes. Not longer than five… Results,” he read, his voice dropping a little, “one line means… Not pregnant. Two lines means—”
When he cut himself off you looked at him.
He exhaled through his nose, eyes still on the box, “means pregnant,” he took a deep breath before he continued again, “and it says not to read it after the time window because apparently the stick gets,” he sighs shaking his head, “confusing.”
Finally, he looked up at you.
“We’ll do it together,” he said, softer now, “okay? I won’t mess it up.”
You laugh lightly, “Steve… Even if this one messes up,” you gesture at the other boxes of different kinds of tests inside the sink waiting. Obviously, Murray wanted you to be sure.
“Right,” he nods nervously, “we have many more… Right. Okay. Do you wanna?”
You nod.
The process begins as you take the test and Steve waits for you outside knowing you probably feel uncomfortable doing it with him watching.
Once it was time, you set the test on the counter.
“It’s gonna be okay,” Steve reassures you as you walk out to him, he gently pulls you into an embrace, “I promise. No matter what, it’ll be okay.”
You lean your head into the warmth of his chest, feeling much better just being comforted by Steve.
“What would you like to do while we wait?” Steve asked looking at you with only love in his eyes.
You shrug, “I… I don’t know. I’m too nervous to just act like everything is fine and the crawl that’s tonight… They expect us to be in our usual spots—“
“Y/N,” Steve cuts you off as he touches your arms gently, “if the test comes back positive… I think we should tell the truth about the pregnancy to the others.”
“What?” Your eyes widen as you feel panic rise in your chest, “why?”
“Do you actually think that Hopper will allow you to sit out on these without a good reason?” He points out, “I don’t want any more stress on you if this test is positive; which means it's best we be honest. For the sake of our baby.”
Tears fell as you sighed and nodded, “I guess you’re right… But don’t forget this all could be a false alarm.”
“Yeah,” he says in a not-so-convincing voice as he shakes his head, “I’m not sure our chances are very good on that.”
“Why?” You send him a small smile, “because I have 100 and 1 symptoms of pregnancy?”
“Pretty much.”
You laugh as he smiles endearingly at you.
TIME PASSES as the alarm from the kitchen goes off.
Steve began to panic, maybe even more than you, but still your breath got erratic as you stood up messing with your hands nervously.
He walks over to you after stopping the timer, “are you ready?”
You take a deep breath, straightening out your outfit attempting to shake off the anxiety rushing through you, “y-yeah… I’m ready.”
Taking the first step into the bathroom, you look at the test, and your breath hitches.
Steve steps forward behind you, “what does it say?”
You take deep breaths in and out as you pick up the test and show him the positive.
Steve’s eyes widen and then soften, he looks from the test to you, and he smiles wider than you have ever seen him smile.
You smile slowly, unable not to even if you're scared shitless; Steve’s happiness was enough to shift your reaction.
He pulls you into a kiss as you place the test down, kissing him back, before he hugs you gently not to hurt you but just enough to love you the way he wants to.
“I know you’re scared,” he whispered, reading you easily, “you have every reason to be. But I’m so happy to be starting a family with you and I’m gonna be here every step of the way for you and our little nugget. I PROMISE.”
