Okay full disclosure, I have only listened up to episode 45 of Malevolent as of now (we're getting there) but I wanted to talk a bit about Arthur Lester. I haven't been in/interacted with the fandom long enough to know what's canon (if anything) when it comes to sexualities and such, but Arthur gives me SUCH aromantic vibes it's actually insane.

I know he's from the 1930s-ish so he probably thinks he has a dysfunction instead of having a different sexuality.

But the way he felt so uncomfortable in his relationship with Bella and KNEW he didn't love her the way he was "supposed" to, even after having an entire child with her, feels so aromantic coded. Many aro people get into relationships they don't really want and then feel conflicted because they're supposed to feel a certain way and simply can't.

He doesn't seem to have had any romantic attraction to people that we know of (again, at least by episode 45, unless I'm forgetting something) and he seems to think he's broken because of it, which is such a common aro experience.

His strongest and most loving relationships (besides his child) seem to be his friendships with some of the men around him. John is the most obvious one, and for someone who was born before Prohibition (?), Arthur sure doesn't seem to have a problem with saying that he loves him, over and over again.

Love feels very different and very complicated for people who don't know they're aro, at least in my experience. Arthur seems to have a very strange relationship with it, both from trauma and what I read as a potential romance-repulsion.

I know that Jarthur is a massive ship in this fandom, and more power to y'all if you read them that way, but I adore that the creator confirmed that they are FRIENDS. Because friendship is not lesser than romance, but sometimes I feel like fandom treats it as such.

John and Arthur are just as close as friends as they would be if they were in a romantic relationship. The nature of the relationship doesn't change the importance of the love that they share. Because they certainly, canonically, DO love each other, but they are not in love.

which is why you get all these books that embrace hyper violence but flinch away from any -phobias and -isms, because that would be uncomfortable.

what makes the dissonance especially jarring is that viewing violence as abstract is a privilege. in Canada and the States, we get to sit comfortably in our homes while our governments fund weapons and send troops to inflict violence overseas. and sure, we can watch a genocide live-streamed on social media, but it still feels distant.
