in hindsight it’s really awesome that there’s a line of ethan dialogue that’s just “I’m sorry for everything” and he says it to his not-dead not-ex dead ex-wife who is happily remarried. it’s non-specific enough that a general audience unfamiliar with mission impossible will get the gist but also so incredibly ethan-specific that real mission impossible heads will know it’s a sign of intense and incurable mental illness

literally no one will get this crossover but me.

ethan hunt is so fascinating to me because he's the trolley operator who would choose to pull the lever to direct the train to hit millions instead of the one friend he cares about. then he will proceed to bodily jump in front of that train to save the millions with the sole belief that god won't ever let him die

also the one friend he saved, once freed from the tracks, started hacking the train to try and save ethan in return. and this is why ethan hunt will never die.

something that's making me actually crazy about final reckoning is that it's bookended by a classic mi-style narration which will self-destruct in five seconds, but in the first one from the president ethan is being blamed, guilted, and pressured into giving up and in the second luther celebrates everything that ethan stood for and reassures him that he shouldn't regret anything he did. it's also notable that luther is the only one who offers him a choice, maybe in the entire movie. fr ends with a sense of uncertainty in ethan; he doesn't know what to do with himself now that his mission is complete, and he's lost the only anchor that's kept him steady for twenty years. and then he gets luther's message. im going insane

i love luther so much. i love that he's the only person in the world trusted with julia's life between mi3 and 4, i love that he calls ethan's entire retelling of ghost protocol "so corny", i love that he tells ethan he loves him and i love that he knows him better than anyone and that it all started with a chaotic emergency team. luther's the only one who's stuck by ethan's side the whole time, he calls it like it is and cuts straight to the heart of problems. and i love him!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
