Project Hail Mary x The Golden Compass
"You have three hours," her voice sounded somewhere higher, echoing in the darkness that was slowly getting closer, swallowing remnants of light and feelings.
"Ry!" Grace jerked, sharply coming to his senses as light filled the room. He blinked a few times as the remnants of his dream were slowly letting go of his mind. It felt wrong for a second, to lay in the bed, an actual bed instead of some xenonite surface.
"Ry, you need to calm down," his own voice called out, grounding him in the present moment.
After a short while Ryland felt like something warm and fluffy crawled up into his bed, curling near his side with quiet gekkering noises. It took a lot of mental effort to look somewhere except the ceiling. A red fox patiently waited for Grace to concentrate on her, flickering her tail a bit in nervousness and worry. Sometimes she was even more anxious than Grace. Which was weird because they both were one. Did that mean Grace's anxiety was so much bigger than he thought? Hmmm…
"Ry?" the fox called once again, her ears went flat against her head. Even if she could feel everything Grace felt, she always was asking, always trying to keep him taking. The whole space travel and artificial coma thing affected her greatly…
"I'm good. Just a nightmare…" Ryland brought his hand to his face, rubbing it a little to shake off feelings from his dream.
They laid in silence for a few minutes, each thinking of their own. Grace was staring at the ceiling, his head was so full of different thoughts and emotions that it slowly turned into white noise. And if pretended well enough it almost felt like he didn't have any thoughts at all. Hope, however, wasn't planning to tear her eyes away from him, placing her muzzle on his shoulder after a few seconds of adjusting. They both were buzzing with restless energy but didn't feel like getting out of the bed. Which meant that they were having a bad day. Spending it in bed was a luring idea.
"You're still afraid…" Hope whispered, her voice turned gentler. She flicked her tail again but after that relaxed just a bit, huffing some hot breath into Grace's cheek before poking it with her wet nose.
"Yeah…" he agreed easily. There were no use trying to argue with someone who was literally part of his being. His soul in a way.
"We can stay here…" Hope said quietly. But despite the fact that she was suggesting, Grace could feel the question, small fearful hesitation. His hesitation. "Pebbles like you…"
"Yeah…" Ryland nodded again, before rolling to his side and pulling Hope into hug. She let out some squeak but nuzzled into him immediately as movement stopped. Her fur was slowly getting better, growing thicker and finally returning some healthy gloss black.
Ryland hid nose in his daimon's fur, feeling relief that now Hope wasn't slowly losing it. They both were in pretty bad shape when they landed on Erid and seeing Hope lose her red coat was the most heart-wrenching moment. Now the two of them were healthy, building new life among eridians. And that was enough to loose a lump in Grace's throat. He was alive and his daimon too. That was enough for now.
The moment was disturbed by loud banging on the front door, a fast one, impatient. Hope immediately slipped through Ryland's hands, running towards the door with loud and happy gekkering, her tail wiped the floor wildly, as she practically vibrated from excitement. Oh, well, they both were the same in that regard. If Rocky was coming over, they both were happy.
"Friend Grace and Hope awake, question?" impatient humming sounded from behind the door, as Rocky was slowly getting just as jumpy as Hope was. Ryland chuckled, crawling out of the bed, to put at least some decent clothes on instead of ridiculous pajamas.
"Yes, yes, yes! We're awake! Awake!" the fox squalled, before running back to Grace to start circling him, "Ry, come on! Rocky's here! Faster, Ry! Faster! Come on!"
"Jeez, Hope, calm down!" Ryland chuckled as he couldn't help stare at his daimon lovingly. "I'm almost ready!"
"Listen to her, statement!" Rocky urged again, keeping his banging without any thoughts to stop. "Hurry! Open door! I have surprise!"
Grace laughed, as he finally opened the door, letting Rocky inside, straight to Hope who jumped at him with a loud bark. As eridian and daimon were playing around, Grace felt a sense of piece wash over him. He was exactly where he wanted to stay and Hope's wild happy gekkering was a great proof of that.
