Startin projects and finish em! Woo!
Yes, this is different from what I’ve been posting here, I’m getting into watercolor a little bit more now.
Flower-space.
I’m back(-ish)!
I’m probably going to be posting less frequently but also be less artistically stressed which is mostly a plus (I do make progress when I’m artistically stressed).
“blow through the caverns of my soul”
Well, believe it or not it’s past the two weeks I gave myself for my portrait challenge. Rather than feeling way more equipped or skilled (I feel that slightly) I feel more as though I could choose to drop down the mountain run of the world of portraits/faces... I’m interested in experimenting more for sure but I’m a little burned out. I might be posting simpler pieces/fewer pieces for a little while.
My beautiful mother! This one is driving me a little crazy- I wish I could capture her face better but I’m having a hard time with it...

Workin’ with the only live model at my disposal!
This was pretty dang quick. I was trying to get more of a feeling of shifting light which I think was achieved though I’m still waiting to get a better handle on the whole ‘form’ aspect (my light and dark spots still feel too focused).
My lovely great aunt Betty.
I’m feeling way more comfortable with doing faces at this point but I’m still not seeing the twinkle in the eye or the person looking out of the painting as much as I want to.
I also want to keep improving the overall light and dark ‘situation’ and work in bigger swatches of dark and light. That’s coming a little more naturally as I’m practicing (especially since I stopped pencil sketching prior to putting paint down) but I do still tend to get bogged down in the details and not pay attention to the larger topographical patterns in an image.
This might just turn into a bunch of self portraits (in blue?) I feel better about experimenting on my own face. I used to fear and hate self portraits so I’m pretty happy that I’m able to do this without a lot of pain.
I realize the eyes are off kilter now, however, I’m a lot happier with the style of this portrait than the others. This is getting closer to the style I’m trying for.
After playing around with the self portrait a little bit I do like this better. I think I’m realizing that one of the keys is the way I use line and form (obviously...this is art). More specifically, the way I mix line and form in a piece. This feels more dynamic to me but also more cohesive.
Me.
It looks like me but I’m still really not into the style that I naturally gravitate towards...which is why I’m practicing I guess. Master’s studies next??

My late, great uncle. All 90′s fab. The canvas is a mess because I gessoed over an old painting.
I’m thinking the 5 paintings a week might be a little much, especially using oil paint. The style I’m going for is pretty basic and fast but I also want more time for the paint to dry so that I can pop in some of the darker spots.
So, I’m going to revise my challenge to to one portrait every two days.
Me(ish!)
A good friend of mine.
Pardon the crazy amount of color/saturation correcting I had to do on this photo- I’m not a photographer and my camera isn’t the best.
I’ve been wanting to get more comfortable with painting faces so I decided to just give it a go. This is an oil of my cousin’s son done mostly with burnt sienna and some of the darker bits hit in with sepia (not totally finished).
My goal is to paint a quick portrait five days a week for at least two weeks. This might be a long shot but if you’d like to help me practice and want to send in a photo of yourself I would be grateful! Message me if you’re interested!

--And now for something completely different--
I’m working on finishing this commission that’s long overdue for an old friend. He collects coins and this will be the cover for a book of his coins of Europe. I previously finished a cover for his book of coins from Asia. Sadly, I didn’t get a good picture of it but if you click on the photo above there should be a link to the photo he took of the other finished cover with his phone.
I will not overwork this, I will not overwork this, I will not overwork this...(my mantra/goal lately)
