Rachel Reviews: Onipa - We No Be Machine
Rachel Reviews: Onipa – We No Be Machine
I’m glad I discovered this album. Browsing through the various artists on Bandcamp, Onipa caught my attention. I was drawn by the artwork but more so the name of the group.
‘Onipa’translates to ‘human’ in the ancient Ashanti dialect, Akan. Being Ghanaian, I was intrigued by what the album had to offer. Groovy, electronic, Afro-futurism and fire are some of the themes used to define the music…

On Repeat This Week – #19 Tame Impala – Breathe Deeper Tame Impala released a new album The Slow Rush that has frequently been labelled as ‘disco-funk’ but I feel it’s more than just disco.
Last month, I travelled to Portugal to celebrate my 24th birthday and embrace the beautiful capital city, Lisbon! I heard nothing but good things about the city and it did not disappoint! I was there for 3 nights which was not enough time to explore the many attractions. Nonetheless, I had a wonderful time and will have to return sometime in the future!
Pena Palace – Sintra
The trip to Pena Palace was the highlight of the holiday! Pena Palace is between the Sintra mountains and overlooks the town. The sun was shining, the view was spectacular and overall a picturesque place to come and take a load of shots for Instagram. I loved the design and colours of the palace – one area felt like I was in Dorne (Game of Thrones reference 🤓)
Praca do Comercio
Another historical landmark, near the Tagus River, was located in the centre of Lisbon. The square had several shops and restaurants/food stalls surrounding the outer area. It was packed with people but we didn’t feel too overcrowded. The weather was so beautiful so my friend and I had our mini photoshoot, grabbed some ice cream and enjoyed the view.
There was also a tram stop that allowed people to go on tram tours. As we didn’t get the chance to do this or ride the iconic Tram 28, it’s on my list to go back and experience this!
Pink Street
Quiet during the day, lively at night! Pink Street is a small, short (and literally pink!) street, packed with many bars and clubs. Pink Wine Point was one bar we visited; they had reasonably priced cocktails/drinks, a nice crowd and a varied playlist. We went there almost every night and found ourselves bar hopping, bumping into tourists and downing tequila shots.
Time Out Market was also a cool place to hang out and grab some food. There was a wide selection of cuisines, I chose Chinese one evening, steak the next. There was the choice of Portuguese dishes, a ton of seafood stalls and the best cafe, Manteigaria, that sold delicious, hot Pastel de Natas!
Honourable mention to the club where I celebrated my birthday – Trumps Lisboa!🥳 This LGBT club had two rooms, where the main room had Drag Queens performing! Kiko, a Portuguese friend I met 4 years ago, was DJing at the club and put our names on the guest list – shoutout to Kiko for the free entry! 😉
The performances were entertaining, music was on point, everyone I met and danced with was fun! The people of Portugal are super friendly and know how to party – I got back to the hotel around 7am! 👀
I’d recommend everyone adds this city to their travel list! There are many activities and places to visit and is definitely doable within 3 – 4 days, if planned correctly. For my future holidays, I will take more time out to plan an itinerary. My first time spending a birthday abroad was truly special and I’m grateful to have explored the beautiful Lisbon. 🇵🇹 ❤️
Obrigada! ✨

Lisbon, Portugal 🇵🇹✨ Last month, I travelled to Portugal to celebrate my 24th birthday and embrace the beautiful capital city, …
Last year, I made a bucket list with all the things I’d like to accomplish before I turn 30. So far I have done 8 things that are listed, recently ticking off 2 and 4! On February 22nd, I travelled alone for a weekend in Amsterdam and attended a festival called A State of Trance!
A State of Trance (ASOT) is one of the biggest trance networks, created by Dutch DJ Armin Van Buuren, that hosts radio shows, events and festivals in the Netherlands, Miami, Madrid and Thailand.
I received mixed responses from friends and colleagues when I told them I was going to a trance festival. I have an eclectic music taste and enjoy most genres. I particularly love electronic dance and love festivals even more so A State of Trance just seemed like the ideal festival to experience! And it did not disappoint 😉
When booking, I purchased the package that included accommodation and tickets to both the boat pre-party and the main festival. Altogether, it cost £180 which was very reasonable – especially as it included breakfast and coaches to/from all the events! Upon arrival, I had to check in and collect an envelope with details about the weekend.
I had a few hours to spare before it was time to get ready for the boat party. I hopped on a Metro going towards the city centre…at least that’s what I thought. I ended up in Waterlooplein, coming out the station and seeing a row of flea markets.
I chose not to rely too much on Google maps and just randomly wander the streets of Amsterdam. I’ve been to Amsterdam before so places looked familiar as I walked around. I discovered a small, busy Chinese restaurant which served cheap but large dishes and after eating I found a Lidl to buy some essentials (alcohol and snacks!)
It was time to get ready for the boat party! I had pre drinks with a group of friendly Danish guys. We played pictionary, I drank wine (and some of their beer), took selfies then we headed to the coach! The journey felt like a school trip; everyone chatting, downing drinks that were snuck on and one man blaring trance on his phone.
The party was amazing! Armin Van Buuren and Ruben De Ronde both played sets, the drinks were strong, I lost my purse, found it again and ended up on the wrong coach home! That’s when I met Julian and Tomas – who also came to the festival alone! The three of us were staying at the same hostel so we called a taxi to collect us. At this point, I was super drunk but remember ordering pizza, bumping into the Danish guys again then crashing in bed.
The day of the festival I woke up quite late but had arranged to meet with Julian and Tomas for a quick drink just before we got the coach to Utrecht for ASOT! Again, the journey was like a school outing but this coach dimmed the lights and played music. When we got to the arena, I looked around in awe at how MASSIVE the place was! Tomas said, “this is just the entrance, wait until you see inside!”
Inside was even more spectacular than I imagined! We walked through a food court which had bars and food stalls serving everything from kebabs to churros. The area also had the studio where Armin Van Buuren frequently streams his radio show. The guys and I quickly ate and headed to the main stage for Armin Van Buuren’s first set! The festival began at 8pm and from then I lost track of time. I separated from the guys because I wanted to explore all the other stages.
I found myself dancing into the Psy Trance stage, where a DJ named Exis was remixing one of my favourite dance tracks! I also wormed my way to the front during PUSH and Above and Beyond’s set. Amongst the lazers, confetti and CO2 cannons, I was seriously impressed with Armin Van Buuren’s second set and all the songs he played. I basically fell in love with the man! The atmosphere in the arena was nothing like I’ve felt at a festival before.
I may have travelled alone but I never felt lonely. I was surrounded by people with great vibes, there to have a good time and enjoy music from known DJs as well as upcoming ones. I partied until 6am, meeting several beautiful people from all over the world. My favourite was the couple who wore matching tees and the American girls whose outfits glowed in the dark! Oh and the random lady with sunglasses who kissed me on the cheek – hope she’s having a great weekend wherever she is!
The whole festival was wonderfully organised; barely any queues, staff were extremely helpful, bartenders were generous (or maybe they felt sorry for a solo raver)! Around 5am, I reunited with Julian and Tomas who were having the time of their lives at the ‘Who’s Afraid of 138’ stage. We stayed until 6am, still buzzing as we made our way to the *correct* coach. I said goodbye to the new friends I made, packed my stuff and made my way to the airport.
Amsterdam will always be my favourite city – I’m making sure I attend A State of Trance again! Perhaps for the 20th Anniversary in two years time! I’m proud and grateful to have done this trip alone, with no problems, just lots of memories 😀 ❤

My Netflix list is a compilation of cheesy, romantic films but I noticed many of my favourites weren’t on there. As it’s Valentine’s Day, I took a trip down memory lane to recall some of my top romantic comedy films!
Love Actually (2003)
It was the ensemble cast – Keira Knightley, Hugh Grant, Tiffany from Eastenders – and the ridiculous yet romantic storyline that made me love the film! Intertwined storylines in films can either be a hit or miss (example – New Year’s Eve) but Love Actually did a pretty good job, especially at showing the different stages of relationships in the 10 or more love stories we were shown. Yes, it was cheesy and perhaps painfully unrealistic at times, but it’s still a classic British rom com!
She’s The Man (2006)
Amanda Bynes featured in several chick flicks and has always been naturally funny. It was her comedic flair that made She’s The Man my all-time favourite movie. Of course, Channing Tatum and his abs were an additional bonus 😉 Viola impersonates her twin brother, Sebastian, so she can play soccer because the girls team was cut. I loved the transformation – the wig, sideburns and the exagerrated boyish mannerisms! As Viola attempts to fit in with the boys, she ends up developing a crush on Duke (Channing Tatum). The film may not rely heavily on romance but does focus on breaking gender roles and stereotypes. Wish this was on Netflix!
To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before (2018)
Now this Netflix film makes a brilliant romcom – not embarrassed to admit I watched it three times in a row! What made me love To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before was the soundtrack and also how relatable main character, Lara Jean, was to myself. Also nice to see that the lead didn’t look like the typical ‘girl next door’. (Netflix have a few teen rom-coms like this!) Noah Centineo plays the charming heartthrob – even I couldn’t help but fancy him– who agrees to fake date Lara Jean, but over time, the two develop feelings. A typical love story, right?! There were a few supporting characters who added humour to the film; best friend, Chris, former crush, Lucas and Lara Jean’s little sister, Kitty.
Lara Jean: “I wonder what Margot is doing in Scotland…” Kitty: “Crack.” Lara Jean: “Why would you say that?!”
(Kitty, of course, was referring to ‘craic’ – a term the Scottish use to describe a good time.)
Bridget Jones’s Diary (2001)
Last up is another classic British rom com – Bridget Jones’s Diary! Bridget is a clumsy, loveable character, trying to get her life and career in order. She crushes on her boss, Daniel (Hugh Grant) eventually dates him…dumps him…then dates childhood friend, Mark Darcy (Colin Firth). Bridget’s love interests fighting in the street for her affection was my highlight of the film. But there were many memorable scenes throughout – Bridget arriving at a party in *that* bunny outfit, her granny underwear and that moment on the fireman pole. Oh and the soundtrack had several sing-a-long songs!
Romantic comedies don’t always have the greatest storylines, but it can be comforting to stay indoors with friends, a partner or by yourself to watch some of the corniest, saddest or funniest romantic films out there! Although some of my personal faves aren’t all on Netflix, there is still a decent number of films you binge-watch this Valentines Day! 😉 ❤

2018
2018 has been an amazing year for me. I made new friends at the Black Femme Film events. I ticked off 6 things on my ’30 before 30′list. I got a job. I went to the theatre, spa, festivals, birthdays, graduations and weddings! I noticed improvements in my health, physically and mentally. During the summer, I had enough free time to go to the gym and completed the Race for Life – a huge…

Nothing feels better than discovering another song by Khalid that I instantly fall in love with. He has released some great songs; something about his music always makes me feel relaxed and in a good mood. After playing Love Lies 13 times in a row, I had a little browse on Apple Music and listened to his EP,…

Rachel Reviews: The Ludoquist
Last month, my mate and I walked past a quirky looking cafe, packed with people eating pizza, sat on plastic chairs, playing board games. It looked like I had walked into hipster central (Shoreditch) but it was actually Croydon!
The Ludoquistis a cafe/bar which holds over 750 boardgames, allowing their customers to play all day, every day for a decent four quid! Last week, I made a reservation…

End of Summer! ☀️
When August comes to an end, I see it as summer is officially OVER. Hands down, 2018 has been one of my best summers! 👏🏾
The previous summer, I was miserable; missing university life, annoyed at job rejections and just plain bored! This year, I said I wanted to have a good one and so far, it definitely exceeded my expectations!! I may not have gone on a holiday (unless we count Romford lol)but I…

They’ve covered an iconic Spice Girls track last year, which I mentioned in one of my first On Repeat This Weekposts – and now Why Mona has released their dance style version of Earth Wind and Fire’s classic disco song, ‘September’.
