dragonfullbottleâ:
âYeah, fair enough. Guess I just want a simple explanation for this. Canât punch a faceless jerk that grabs people from space and time.â He gripped the railing, letting out a frustrated sigh. âCan punch Evolt though.â
Sento being genuine was fairly rare. Banjou thinks he remembers a handful of times at best when the physicist didnât deflect with a playful insult or a long-winded theory about something unrelated. He debated making a joke out of it, as per their usual dynamic. But it felt cheap, or even cruel. âThanks. You too. I miss the rest of the crew, but at least I know youâre safe.â
It was a good feeling, being around him. With everything going on back in Touto, Banjou had never had time to notice it. But it almost felt like when heâd met Kasumi. That feeling of being safe, knowing the other person was genuinely glad to have you around. Banjou also felt⌠weird, thinking about that. Deflecting wasnât normally his thing, but he jumped at the chance to do so. He pulled the holophone out of his pocket and started messing with it until he found a map application.
âWonder if thereâs any good gyms around here. Just cause Evoltâs not around it doesnât mean I can afford to slack off.â
Sento hums, almost glad for the change of subject. Not that he isnât pleased by Banjouâs declaration. Too pleased, even. But heâs not exactly ready to have a real conversation about real feelings, after the day heâs had, in some kind of alternate dimension. Heâs not ready for that on a good day.
So he soaks in the dubiously real sun, comforting himself with the knowledge that thereâs a Banjou thatâs safe, here with him.
âI canât imagine the residents here would have much use for a gym.â Sento says, indicating the feathery denizens wandering about. He smirks. âI saw a bear on the train earlier. You could ask one of them.â
waretheredeyesâ:
âNow thatâs what I like to hear,â says Hilda, grinning widely. âSounds like your situation was not wholly different from ours. And we came out on top from our ordeals, so Iâm sure you can make your thing work, too. Canât imagine how Iâd have felt if whoever runs this place had plucked me out of Ishgard in the middle of something big, but if you ever need a sympathetic ear, you can try and find me. The Sea of⌠Tranquility, was it? Thatâs where I woke up, and I think thatâs where Iâm expected to stay.â
She gets up again. For a few moments sheâs silent, with her back to Sento, slowly taking in the view of the Sea of Nectar.
âI donât trust this Ark,â she says finally. âItâs giving us room and board, and seemingly doesnât want anything from us, and thatâs just not⌠right. Sooner or later, somebodyâs going to come calling, and weâve got to be ready. We may have been robbed of our weapons, but they canât stop us from banding together and doing our best to defend ourselves, even if we donât know whatâs coming. Thatâs what we did where Iâm from, and thatâs what I want to do here.â
She turns to Sento again. Her eyes are bright. âYou clearly understand the workings of this place better than I can. Me, Iâve got experience dealing with prisons what pretend they ainât prisons. What do you say we join forces to try and loosen the collars this place has around our necks?â
Sento feels compelled to clap. He settles for smiling wide and sincere. Finally, someone who wanted to do something!
He stands, excited. âThatâs an idea. Thatâs what I wanted to do from the beginning. I donât know much about the others here, though I do know theyâre confused. Not exactly up for a fight. I know a guy here, though, from Earth. Heâs pretty reliable. Youâd get along, I think.â
ynysafallachâ:
âSento Kiryuu,â Merlin echoes, grinning at his companion. âSorry, I donât get out much, so I havenât heard of you, Iâm afraid⌠But a superhero, you say? Wow! I canât believe Iâm talking to a superhero face to face.â His excitement seems genuine.Â
Merlin looks down at his feet, where flowers are even now blooming. He disentangles his left leg from an overly ambitious sweetbriar, then looks back at Sento. âAha, yes, you could say that. I am certainly the cause of them.â
Sento blinks. Thatâs certainly not the response he usually gets. Clearly, he doesnât get out much either.
Maybe Merlin is not trying to trick him into his death. Maybe. He clears his throat into his hand. âIâd offer a demonstration, but most of my gear has been taken.â His belt sits in his coat pocket, a comforting weight, but the time limit bothers him. Merlin doesnât seem to have a limit, though, apparently.
Letting his curiosity get the better of him, he says, âDo you do that... Consciously? The flowers, I mean. Is there some kind of catalyst?â In his shoes, maybe?
pasderoseâ:
Peter stares at Sento for a long moment, confusion in his own face. âWell⌠Yes. For a bit of business recently. Though⌠that all ended a bit messily, so I havenât been back. Itâs an interesting place. Why? Are you thinking of going sometime?âÂ
He shrugs, a smile tugging at his lips. âNot sure I could recommend it as a vacation destination, really.â
Sento isnât the best at reading people, but heâs sure at this point that this man is being deliberately obtuse. Couldnât he see that theyâre in the same boat?
He rubs the back of his neck, slightly uncomfortable. Sawa could probably get something out of him, but itâs just him. âI think the situation is a bit more dire than you may realize,â Sento says, carefully, âMars is uninhabited. No technology exists that could allow it to support life. From my perspective, anyway. That doesnât seem to be true of yours.â

pasderoseâ:
Peter blinks. âWell,â he says mildly, âyes, Iâm sure. Earth is hardly the crown jewel of its system.â Is Sento saying that heâs from Earth? Peterâs lips twitch a little, expression bemused for a moment as he looks at Sento, then follows his gaze to look out the window.
âItâs hardly sandy enough to be Mars,â he remarks. (And thank goodness it isnât.) âHmm⌠Ganymede, perhaps, or Europa? Itâs hard to say. Weâd have to see the rest of the planet first to make a good guess of it.â
Sento listens, shocked, as Duke rattles off the names of places that definitely couldnât... Support life? Not now, anyway.
âWait,â He says, carefully, struggling to phrase this question in a way that would get him an answer - old Martian calendars wouldnât translate to Earth understanding of time, after all, âJust to clarify. Have you... Been to Mars?â
waretheredeyesâ:
âA library, in this little thing?â Hilda squints at her phone suspiciously, but then her face brightens with understanding. âOh, it must be like a tomestone, then! In that case, Iâll have to look into it later. Maybe itâll have some information on what this thrice-damned place is and why weâre here. And where theyâre keeping my gun.â She means it: she had just assumed the device was flashy but useless, but if thereâs knowledge to be gained from it, then itâs worth taking an interest in. She has no idea how to access the information contained in tomestones, but Sento makes it sound easy enough.
She reaches out to shake Sentoâs hand. âHilda. Iâm from Ishgard, in Eorzea, in a world called Hydaelyn. Ever hear of it? I imagine not; I ainât heard of your Earth after all. Is it a nice place? Ishgardâs got its share of problems, but itâs moving in the right direction, and Iâll admit Iâm anxious to get back and keep helping however I can.â
Sento shakes her hand, relieved. It would be ridiculous to not use a phone, and put yourself at a disadvantage. Though, he canât imagine the phone will actually answer any of her questions. The AI certainly didnât answer his.
He nods, slowly, at the barrage of information. âI canât say Iâve heard of... Any of those places. Thatâs par for the course here, though.â
âEarth is... I like it, though it has its problems too. Weâre - my friends and I were working on getting someone out of power who was running the place into the ground, so Iâd like to get back too, honestly. As... Interesting as this place is.â
dragonfullbottleâ:
Banjou had been trying to lighten the mood, but he felt bad in retrospect. Not about making light of his scandal. So much had happened since then and so much was happening now that he had to pretend he could laugh at something. The other alternative was getting angry, and that hadnât served him as well here as it did in Touto.
Sentoâs brain seemed like it was still going at full speed. It was reassuring to know that one of them had all the thinking covered. Banjouâs strong suit wasnât logic or planning in the best of times. This was nice though. He felt his muscles start to unwind now that he was around Sento, a dayâs worth of tension easing out. For now, at least.
âHuh⌠an ark.â Banjou said that as if he had really any idea what that meant. Upon seeing Sento hold up a very expensive-looking phone, he realized there was a weight in his pocket heâd been ignoring. Grabbing for it revealed that he had an identical one and hadnât noticed this entire time. He left it there so Sento didnât catch on. âDoesnât seem likely, but I also didnât expect Evolt to raise a tower out of the earth. Or⌠you know. Everything else.â His voice got a little quiet towards the end there as his mind drifted back to the last time he saw Sento, but he tried to pick it back up.
âItâs good to see you though.â
âYou know Evolt,â Sento says, frowning, âHe wouldnât go back into the shadows now that heâs taken center stage.â
Sento makes a face. Of course Banjou would say that. Sento considers deflecting, again. Because that would be easier. But, after everything heâd just left behind, heâs feeling... Sentimental. He looks at the sky, mostly just to not look at Banjou when he says this.
âIf I had to see anyone here... Iâm glad it was you.â
If nobody is "running" this place, who is answering our questions here?
Good evening, Sento!
I am answering your questions here! I am the Index Protocol (or Codex Protocol, if you prefer) assigned to Aldebaran. I have a vast breadth of wonderful knowledge and exist solely to share it with users who access my program through their holophones, just as you are right now.

âFoan?â The word sounded entirely foreign to Hilda. âIs that what itâs called? If you can use it to talk to somebody whatâs far away, then I guess it must be like a linkpearl, but it looks completely different from one of those. Not that Iâve ever used linkpearls much, mind. In the Brume, usually you can just yell somebodyâs name, and theyâll yell right back at you,â she says, chuckling at her own joke.
She experimentally pokes the foan a few times until the screen lights up, then once more, accidentally making it suddenly turn loud and colourful as the words CONFECTIONERY ANNIHILATION appear on the screen. âOh, Fury,â she sighs, quickly pressing the button that sheâs previously worked out turns the device off. âI reckon this kind of thing is wasted on one like me.â
Never one to act shy, Hilda sits down next to the man. His shirt, she notices, looks several sizes too large for him, but it does look comfortable, and probably better suited to the local climate than her leathers. âAnyroad, you said âwhere I come fromâ. I take it youâre not from around here, neither, then?â
Sento nods, most of what sheâs saying going right over his head. He frowns as she turns her phone off. The technology may be complicated, but itâs useful!
âOh, right. Iâm Sento. From a place called Earth. We use these a lot,â He holds his phone out to use as an example. âSo Iâm pretty familiar. Theyâre useful for getting information, too, kind of like a library.â He sincerely hopes she knows what a library is.

Merlin beams in apparent delight at Sentoâs mimicking of his own words. âHahaha, of course, of course!!â He hops down from the rubble heâs been perched on to clap Sento on the shoulder, all friendly-like.Â
âSo youâve been brought here too, hmm?â Merlin asks. âPitiful place, isnât it?â he asks, waving his hands to indicate the whole of the Sea of Crisis. âIâm Merlin, by the way. Some call me the Magus of Flowers. Perhaps youâve heard of me?â He gives Sento a conspiratory wink.
Sento looks from the hand on his shoulder to the man. Merlin, huh? Sentoâs heard the name, but myth is one thing and fact is quite another.
Merlin is probably harmless, if a little too smug for Sentoâs liking. And Sento knows a thing or two about smug. âSento Kiryuu, though I doubt youâve heard of a devastatingly handsome genius superhero where youâre from. I take it those are yours, then?â He points to the bright blossoms at Merlinâs feet.
pasderoseâ:
Peter laughs as he straightens and moves around the counter. âYou think weâll have to fight?â He asks. âI was hoping that this would be an easily cleared up misunderstanding, really. But thatâs not likely I suppose.â As he opens the cabinet, retrieves the plates and sets them on the counter by Sento, he considers that. âI donât have any idea why Iâm here either, though. I have my theories but⌠whoâs to say?â
He tips his head, tapping his fingers against the counter. âWhat do you think? Do you have any theories of your own yet as to why youâre here?â
Sento pauses in setting out the food. Why was his first instinct to fight? He clears his throat, uncomfortable. âIâm... Used to fighting, at this point. I think your idea sounds better, really.â
He rolls Dukeâs question around. Of course, this could be Evoltâs doing. Sento was wrong, and Evolt turned their plan back at them, and made this place, to... Torment them? That seems a bit too altruistic for him. He replies, âNone that hold any water.â He looks out the window, at the clear water, full of life. He frowns. âAll I know is, this place... It's too technologically advanced to be Earth.â
dragonfullbottleâ:
Sento was doing that thing where he muttered to himself and didnât think Banjou could hear him. Which, to be fair, Banjou couldnât make out the words he was saying exactly. But that wasnât the point.Â
âSecret?!â Any dramatic tension hanging in the air dissipated.  Banjou felt a brief flash of worry as to why Sento was being evasive. He was hiding something and it probably wasnât good. But he was back and it felt good to engage in their banter. It was the first comforting thing heâd experienced all day. âCheating isnât that bad! It went bad one time, sure, doesnât mean it will this time.â
Banjou smiled, and leaned up against a nearby railing. âWhat is this place? Because the place I woke up in definitely wasnât Touto. And while Smash are one thing, I definitely donât recall bird people.â He jammed one thumb over his shoulder towards one of the locals for emphasis.
Sento feels a brief pang of guilt at bringing up cheating - he was really blowing it today. Recovering, he scoffs at Ryuugaâs response. âThe laws of time and space are a bit harsher than Toutoâs, you know."
At least Banjou seemed calmer, now. It was good to see him, even if he wasnât exactly the Banjou he wanted to see. Not that he would say that, ever. He sighs, leaning on the railing next Banjou. He really thought they would be done with this sort of thing.
âAn âArkâ apparently,â He holds up the phone they gave him. He still had his (much cooler) phone, but there was no network to connect to, and it didnât work as a bike anymore. Figures. âI donât know who runs it, or what theyâre trying to achieve... So, probably nothing to do with Evolt. And those bird people donât seem much like Smash - I saw one selling ice cream earlier.â
@rabbitrabbitform
The train was easy to figure out. Hilda had taken an airship to Limsa and back before, and the train seemed to work on a similar principle. It was going to a place called the Sea of Nectar, which was as good a direction as any â Hildaâs aim was just to get her bearings in this bizarre new place sheâd been spirited away to.
Sheâs just a little surprised when a colourful bird says hello to her as she steps off the train. She already had a run-in with a talking bear outside of the building where she had awoken, which could have ended badly if the gun she instinctively reached for hadnât mysteriously disappeared. Well, now she knows there are talking animals around, and so far none of them meant her harm. Still, this place is bleeding confusing, and even if sheâs a little proud of herself for successfully taking the train to another sea, thereâs still much more that she doesnât understand.
The first non-animal person Hilda sees is a hyuran man sitting on a bench outside the train station, casually tapping away at his⌠device? The rectangular thing that Hilda also found when she turned up here. It seemed important, but she didnât trust any of that Allagan nonsense. If Allagan technology was reliable, then maybe Allag wouldnât have fallen, right? Anyway, if it is important, then Hilda needs to understand how it works, but sheâll be damned if she actually trusts that thing.
âYou seem to be mighty familiar with this thing,â she says as she walks up to the hyur and fishes her own Allagan rectangle out of her jacket pocket. âMind showing a lass how to use it?â
Sento was trying to get in the habit of going outside, because, you know, you need sun. Even if it was artificial sun. He was doing dailies in Critter Crossroads: Pouch Party, a game he had never hear of before coming here but was shockingly engrossing, when the woman approaches.
âYour phone?â He says, taking stock. The woman looked human enough, but she had pointed ears, like some kind of fantasy character, and her leather jacketâs detailing would make Gen-san weep (though, maybe not, since it actually made her look pretty cool). There is a high chance that she has never seen a phone before. "You use it to communicate, for the most part. Is there nothing like this where you come from?â

dragonfullbottleâ:
âWeeks? Sento, that just happened.â Ryuga backed off some, defensiveness turning to outright confusion. âLast time I saw you was when Evolt was in your body. The last thing I even remember was fighting him.â Confusion gave way to guilt over very nearly attacking Sento. Ryuga just got him back, and heâd been ready to use the Build Driver on him based on a hunch. Ryuga was nearly about to move on when something struck him. Why had Sento been so sure Ryuga wasnât real?
âWait, why did you say it was a trick? If the last thing I remember was weeks ago, then whatâs the last thing you remember?âÂ
Sento brings a hand to his mouth, thinking (stalling), âOf course... If whoever is in charge here can grab people from different universes, whoâs to say they canât take people from different places in time as well?â
He looks to Banjou. Who asked him a question that he definitely absolutely canât answer. Heâs starting to feel guilty for letting him nearly take a dive off the railing. But, as Sento has already established, time is meaningless here, so any Banjou from along his personal timeline would have deserved it for his ridiculous heroic stunt. Obviously.
âThe last thing I remember...â Sento says, âIs a secret. What if we go back to our respective places along the timeline, and then you have all the answers to our problems? That would be cheating, Banjou.â
dragonfullbottleâ:
Ryuga very nearly went skidding straight off the pier. He veered left at just the last second and hit a railing. When he recovered from having hitting a hard railing gut-first, he heard Sento.
âThis is a pretty sick joke, you know.âÂ
It almost sounded like an accusation. No, not almost. It was an accusation. Ryuga gave Sento an uncomfortable stare as his brain processed just what he could be implying.  âSento⌠what are you talking about?â Ryuga took a step closer, and it the realization forced Ryugaâs defenses to go up.  âYou are Sento, right? You had white hair last time I saw you, but I wouldnât put it past him to change it back to screw with me.â
Ryuga started to reach for the Build Driver in his pocket, just in case. âIt is you, right? Youâre back, right? Please say youâre back.â He didnât plead typically, but the possibility that this was just one more trick of Evoltâs was enough to make him desperate.
âIâm back? Youâre the one who -â Sento pauses. White hair...
He nearly grabs Banjou with the force of the realization. Heâs got his defenses up, though, and Sento doesnât want a fist in the gut. Again. âIs that the last thing you remember? That was weeks ago.â
