people who use wheelchairs aren’t necessarily paralyzed. people use wheelchairs for a variety of reasons- heart problems, breathing problems, chronic pain, MS, muscle weakness, bad motor skills, broken bones, and a variety of invisible illnesses.

don’t question a person’s disability. they know it better than you, and they are using it for a reason. if they get out of the wheelchair it doesn’t mean they are ‘faking’. just because you can’t see their reason for using the wheelchair doesn’t mean it’s not valid. 

don’t assume. being in a wheelchair is not fun or pleasant. don’t clump every wheelchair user’s reasons for using a wheelchair together. don’t assume what their illness is and treat them according to what you think it is.

ways to treat people who are in a wheelchair

good

if you see them struggling with accessibility, ask if you can help. don’t be pushy, if we say no leave us alone.

you can still maintain eye contact with somebody in a wheelchair without bending down to the wheelchair’s level

just treat them as you would somebody not in a wheelchair

bad

leaning down to talk to them

talking slowly and like you would to a child

generally speaking, don’t ask what their disability is

getting angry at them for taking advantage of wheelchair accessibility

don’t tell them that they are an inspiration to you and are troopers-
