Lucas, whose real name is Reckless, was found as a stray in Monmouth County, New Jersey. Charles and Elicia James were stunned when they walked into the Monmouth County SPCA and spotted their beloved pup.

“I told my wife ‘That dog looks like Reckless’ and she said ‘It is Reckless!’” Charles James told The News. “He started jumping three feet in the air and we started crying.”

The fake eruption of Mt. Edgecumbe was the work of a local prankster, 50-year-old Oliver “Porky” Bickar. The idea to ignite the volcano had occurred to him in 1971. As soon as he thought of the idea, he knew he had to do it. So he collected 70 old tires that he kept in an airplane hangar. But he had to wait three years, until April Fool’s Day 1974, until the visibility conditions were just right for the prank.

Concerned residents spilled out of their homes onto the streets to gaze up at the volcano. Calls poured in to local authorities. The Coast Guard commander radioed the Admiral in Juneau who ordered a chopper be sent out to investigate.

As the Coast Guard pilot approached Mt. Edgecumbe, the plume of smoke grew in size. Finally he was right above it, and he peered down into the crater. At first, he couldn’t believe what he was seeing. He looked more closely, and then he laughed. Stacked in the cone of the volcano, burning with a greasy flame, was a huge pile of old tires. And spray-painted in the snow beside the tires, in 50-foot-high black letters, were the words “APRIL FOOL.”

Tokugawa Tsunayoshi was the fifth shogun of the Tokugawa dynasty of Japan.  He is known for instituting animal protection laws, particularly for dogs. This earned him the nickname of “the dog shogun.”

Tsunayoshi sought protection for living beings in the later parts of his rule. In the 1690s and first decade of the 18th century, Tsunayoshi, who was born in the Year of the Dog, thought he should take several measures concerning dogs.

Over 50,000 dogs were deported to kennels in the suburbs of the city where they would be housed. They were apparently fed rice and fish which were at the expense of the taxpaying citizens of Edo.

Tsunayoshi is also featured in an episode of Demashita! Powerpuff Girls Z (A magical girl anime series based on the American animated television series The Powerpuff Girls) in which his ghost is awakened and possesses the Mayor, using his authority to invoke a ‘monster compassion law’ akin to his dog protection laws.
