okay, so I have another theory. It may be a stretch, but I believe symbolism in any form can be powerful. Anyways, my theory about Virgil being a "grey side" (not a dark or light side) is that where he stands plays a lot into his purpose. He stands on the stairs. Stairs go between one floor and another. Maybe being on the stairs is a way of Thomas symbolizing that Anxiety "goes between" the light and dark sides.
Same can go for why Patton is in front of the blinds. He is the morality and the way c!Thomas uses morality and emotions in Sander Sides to hide his emotions and let his morality blind him to all the not so light things (this creating Remus).
We also first meet Janus as Patton, the blinds were also symbolic of Janus blocking or blinding Thomas to the different, not so light side of himself.
Roman is more clean cut and clear that he is a performer, and actor, so he is put in front of the TV. The TV symbolizing his love of stories and fantastical worlds to be acted in. But also about vanity. It's not a secret that Roman is pretty vain when it comes to his appearance, much like movie stars in movies and TV who put on costumes and make up to keep up the appearance of a character.
Part 2 because I forgot Remus, Logan and Janus... Oopsies. Also, take caution not to pull anything, as these could be a stretch as well.
So, for Logan, he is in front of the kitchen (we see Thomas trying to organize and learn cooking, so Logic is very applied there), but he is more visibly in front of a bookshelf. It's more straightforward between books, organization and knowledge. Also, the place Thomas would most likely use his Logic is at his office desk that his friends built for him. There is also a main hallway and the doors (both the closet door and the entrance/exit door) and maybe that has to do with neurological?? pathways of some sort???
Now, Janus is the most plain, but he still does have a snippet of blinds. So where he is still shading or "blinding" c!Thomas to many things, he also has a plain wall behind him. The wall could be symbolic of the "uncovering" of truth. It's plain, so the potential for a painting, or blinds covering it is more of the focus.
Remus's could be less symbolic of what he represents and more how c!Thomas handles him. He's stood between Virgil and Roman, meaning he is anxious to show that side of his creativity. But he is also standing in front of the Lego Map, which is more of a puzzle Thomas solved. As we see in "Dealing with Intrusive Thoughts", Thomas still doesn't quite have a grasp on handling his intrusive thoughts or the dark side of his creativity. Both the creativity and the intrusiveness is a puzzle or Lego set to be solved. There is also the geopolitics of the map itself with Colonization and Imperialism all over the world, and that correlates to the intrusiveness of Remus (but idk, is that too political?).
C!Thomas is the center of the Living room. The whole series is his name sake, he is the main character (sorry Roman), he is the center of his own life and this, the center of the living room.
