Listen to me. Listen to me. Listen to me. Listen to me.
I know there is a lot of discourse (tm) around this right now but listen to me
sometimes you do just have to lie to children.
If, when my toddler is, you know, toddling around saying “mama? Big ball?”
If I were lean down and say “unfortunately the big beach ball for some reason fills you with such an unadulterated rage that is beyond human comprehension that you scream until you pass out, so mama had to remove the beach ball from the premises until you can better regulate your emotions” she would simply stare at me like I had 3 heads full of equal betrayal.
So, for now, instead “big ball went night night!”
Please understand when I say “removed the ball from the premises” I mean I popped it in a fit of exhausted confusion. I murdered the beach ball.
See I’ve lied to you all too and it was better this way.
you can’t just leave this in the tags etc.
You can’t be funnier then me on my own posts, I’m in tears from laughter
"It may not be high art but everyone's having too much fun to care" Cinematic Universe
The Mummy (1999) and The Mummy Returns
Men in Black
Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves
Kingsman: The Secret Service and Kingsman: The Golden Circle
Pacific Rim
The Man from U.N.C.L.E.
Feel free to add your own. Please note this is not just "any" fun blockbuster, it's a certain subset where it's a bit of a romp, everyone in the cast is having fun and it's just a joy to watch.
Mamma Mia. Obviously.
ok but. i need you to know that the mummy, men in black and pacific rim in particular are regarded as technical masterpieces when it comes to director skill & cinematography?
the intro shot of rick o'connell in the mummy is one of the best and most efficient camera work in an action movie. the way pacific rim utilizes space when showing the kaijus is literally taught in art school. they're not just blockbusters they're also iconic movies on a technical point of view!
sometimes things feel good because they are genuinely really good!
Just watched Adam Conover (of Adam Ruins Everything) make such a solid point that I think we should spread far and wide. Yes, having AI write your emails is lazy, sure, but people love being lazy. We need to really emphasize that sending AI emails (or using AI responses on social media, or publishing AI flyers, or or or) is rude.
It's rude. You're making someone take their time to read something you couldn't bother to write. You're telling them they were so unimportant you couldn't be bothered to actually take the time to say something yourself. And frankly, you're lying about it while you're at it.
It's rude.
And if I said Megamind is one of the few movies that understands Superman.
And if I said Megamind through its three subversions of Superman shows a deeper understanding that the point of Superman is that he was loved and taught to love by good, present parents, and because of that he is able to return that love to a world even if it doesn't always accept it, and he is not corrupted by his power, than many other films either subverting or playing the superman story straight.
Megamind has three Superman subversions. One is obviously Megamind himself. He was not raised loved by the world, but rather was loved by those hated by the world. Because he was still raised with love, he does care about other people, hence his character development. But because he didn't receive wider love growing up, his own is misplaced at first.
Metro Man was not loved growing up in a way that mattered. His adopted father was clearly very absent, and while we don't know much about his family, their relationship seems superficial. Because of this, his sense of duty to the world is also superficial, hence his boredom.
Hal wasn't raised with power. He gained it and was shown how to use it by a 'space dad' who only taught him power and not love. Hence, he sees it only as a grasping means to an end.
All three of these subversions, in their negative space, create the silhouette of the superhero that they are parodying. That silhouette is of a space child that came to earth and was cared for very deeply by the world, and taught love through his experience of love, and because of that holds fast to his duty to the world. Which is Superman.

There’s a reason I really like ‘humans are space orcs’ or ‘space far’ ect stories. Across both sci-fi and fantasy humans are often just the default ‘plain’ race. And that feels kind of reductive to both humans and aliens. It makes us feel kind of pointless and it makes aliens just feel like human+. So I really like this genre because it explores humans as something different with their own strengths.
That being said I’m now running into the opposite problem where I’m getting tired of reading stories where humans are just like overpowered gods compared to every other species.
I wanna read stories where we interact with creatures with completely different strengths and weaknesses than us. Stories that acknowledge the evolutionary path humans went on and explore how that makes us different from creatures that evolved from a different path.
Like we evolved from tree dwelling primates, we are likely a lot more comfortable climbing than say a species that evolved from a burrowing animal who would be more comfortable in enclosed spaces than us.
Or the human endurance, we evolved to be persistent pursuit hunters. It’s where our sweat comes from, it’s part of our thermal regulation that allowed our ancestors to run/walk for miles after their prey. We likely have way more endurance than any creature that evolved from an ambush predator but they might be faster or stronger.
Or going back to our hunting methods we also evolved to use projectiles. Like our brains and arms literally evolved to throw with distance, power, and accuracy. Us having athletes that can throw a ball at over 90 mph would be insane to a species without that adaptation. Maybe we even developed projectiles earlier in our civilization than other species. But they likely have their own sport based on something we might not even be able to do.
There are so many cool features that we can have different than other species. And there are so many features other species could potentially have that would be awesome to us. Like imagine the dexterity of something that evolved from a cephalopod. Or the agility from something that evolved from a feline.
Basically, I don’t want one side, human or alien to be overpowered. I want them to look at each other and both be amazed at what the other can do.
I really like how wild the coterie looks to Maya, Amelia, and Cody.
Cody mentions to Maya that there are vampires in town Maya goes "yeah, I think they were dating." and Cody who ran into Mitch and Madelaine says "Really?" pauses and goes "I guess."
Amelia learns they live in her house after Maya comes home with part of her old wall. They meet after episode 9 and talk about how the hunter in town and Barnaby Whittaker who they thought was kind of immortal at the moment have both been taken care of and also Bigfoot is back. They've been in this town for their life and everything's shaping up so fast. There are now nine busses parked outside the co-op.

ok so this is another long shot but a few years ago there was a twitter post (in japanese i think?) that had measurememts for how to make this book stand thing out of cardboard that you could use to double up books and use up more space on shelves
back then i made a bunch of these but by now i lost the pic and dont know how to find the original post anymore
if it comes down to it i can just take one apart and get the measurements from there but i would be very grateful if anyone happens to have the original post or something similar??
don't mind how long it's been since i made this post, anyway i realized that i don't even need to take one apart to get the measurements when i can literally just unfold it and refold it /FACEPALM
so anyway here is the diagram for anyone else who is interested!!
this requires pretty big carboard pieces, if you have a really big box or something you can make it from one piece, but if you don't, you can also just make each of the pieces individually and then tape them together
and then in the end you put it together like this!!
and then when you make a bunch you can put them all next to each other and stack your books like crazy
EVERYONE START GETTING MORE USE OUT OF YOUR SPACE NOW!!!!

interview with the masquerade
vampire: the vampire
No one wants to admit this but you don’t actually have to eat eggs and dairy for breakfast. Farmers just did that because they’d milk the cows and collect eggs in the morning. You can literally make a sandwich or a bowl of pasta or really anything you want for breakfast. There isn’t some medical reason you have to eat cereal and milk or fried eggs in the morning—our idea of “breakfast food” is an entirely artificial construct. Do what makes you happy.
