I’ve had to have this conversation with my boys and my pathfinders, and let me tell you, they don’t respond very well to a lecture.
So let me tell you a story instead.
There was a young couple, in high school and in love. Both sixteen - above the age of consent. They’d been dating for years and felt secure in their relationship. So they’d sext each other - including sending nudes.
It was consensual, they didn’t share the pictures with anyone else, they were a longtime couple, and they were old enough to be having sex (according to the law).
But someone figured out they were sending them. And told the principal, who had to report it to the authorities.
Both of these kids went to jail. He, for possession of child pornography, and her for distribution. Even though it was perfectly legal for them to be as naked as they wanted in person.
This is very real. Here’s a 14-year-old who Snapped a classmate. Here’s a best case scenario, but the numbers are still crazy. Brief news article warning. A girl reports her nudes being shared past the intended recipient, still gets charged. Consensual video reported after friendship ended, 16-year-old girl charged for making it. Just a whole bunch of kids being charged. Teen couple charged with sexually exploiting themselves.
