Sun Ra - Singles - Strut Recordsâ complete singles collection is out!
Strut present a new definitive collection of singles released by jazz maverick Sun Ra during his Earth years, spanning 1952 to 1991. Released prolifically during the 1950s and more sporadically thereafter, primarily on the Saturn label, the 45s offer one-off meteorites from Raâs prolific cosmic journey, tracing the development of his forward-thinking âSpace-Bopâ and his unique take on jazz and blues traditions which sounded unlike anything else from the period. As with his LPs, most 45s were only pressed in small runs and were sold at gigs and have since become extremely rare and sought after. Some have only been discovered in physical form in recent years; some were planned and pencilled but allegedly never made it to vinyl and some appeared as one-off magazine singles and posthumous releases.
âSinglesâ will be released in various formats across two release dates. All formats feature fully remastered tracks, rare photos, poster artwork, extensive sleeve notes by Francis Gooding, an interview with Saturn Records founder Alton Abraham by John Corbett and detailed track by track and session notes by Paul Griffiths. The 45s box sets each feature a hardboard flip top box containing 10 x 45s in their original artwork along with a bound 28pp booklet.

Black/Surveillance is a feature-length documentary that examines the intersection of Blackness and surveillance in the United States. Using lenses of anti-blackness and afrofuturism, the film probes what surveillance means to Black people and what is being done to resist the hyper surveillance state that is compounded by Blackness.Â
Surveillance has become a part of everyday life. Surveillance exists in the security camera on every block, the phones we carry, and our social media. This has propelled a discussion around surveillance over the past couple of years from people like Edward Snowden, but how do we contextualize surveillance under white supremacy? Does everyone experience the same types of surveillance? Â What is the history of surveillance for Black people from enslavement to present day.
The Film Black/Surveillance will Specifically focus on those who are most marginalized the intersection of Blackness and surveillance: Black trans people, Black undocumented people, Black women, Black homeless people, and Black incarcerated people. The film will be a mix of personal narratives and interviews expounding on the questions above and how people envision their own spaces, worlds, freedoms and the ways in which they escape surveillance. These means of escape range from encryption to performance, dreams and meditations.
Nobody escapes the way machines scramble identity at the push of a button, turns the soul into sound-fx with the greatest of ease. Instead of retreating from machinic mutation back into an ethics of sound, UR is mutation-positive. The sampler is a mandate to recombinate - so itâs useless lamenting appropriation. Resisting replication is like doing without oxygen. The sampler doesnât care who you are.

The undersigned, being alternately pissed off and bored, need a means of speculation and asserting a different set of values with which to re-imagine the future. In looking for a new framework for black diasporic artistic production, we are temporarily united in the following actions.
***The Mundane Afrofuturists recognize that:***
We did not originate in the cosmos.
The connection between Middle Passage and space travel is tenuous at best.
Out of five hundred thirty-four space travelers, fourteen have been black. An all-black crew is unlikely.
Magic interstellar travel and/or the wondrous communication grid can lead to an illusion of outer space and cyberspace as egalitarian.
This dream of utopia can encourage us to forget that outer space will not save us from injustice and that cyberspace was prefigured upon a "master/slave" relationship.
While we are often Othered, we are not aliens.
Though our ancestors were mutilated, we are not mutants.
Post-black is a misnomer.
Post-colonialism is too.
The most likely future is one in which we only have ourselves and this planet.
***The Mundane Afrofuturists rejoice in:***
Piling up unexamined and hackneyed tropes, and setting them alight.
Gazing upon their bonfire of the Stupidities, which includes, but is not exclusively limited to:
- Jive-talking mutants;
- Magical negroes;
- Enormous self-control in light of great suffering;
- Great suffering as our natural state of existence;
- Inexplicable skill in the martial arts;
- Reference to Wu Tang;
- Reference to Sun Ra;
- Reference to Parliament Funkadelic and/or George Clinton;
- Reference to Janelle MonĂĄe;
- Obvious, heavy-handed allusions to double-consciousness;
- Desexualized protagonists;
- White slavery;
- Egyptian mythology and iconography;
- The inner city;
- Metallic colors;
- Sassiness;
- Platform shoes;
- Continue at willâŚ

The harmless fun that these and all the other Stupidities have brought to millions of people.
The harmless fun that burning the Stupidities will bring to millions of people.
The imaginative challenge that awaits any Mundane Afrofuturist author who accepts that this is it: Earth is all we have. What will we do with it?
The chastening but hopefully enlivening effect of imagining a world without fantasy bolt-holes: no portals to the Egyptian kingdoms, no deep dives to Drexciya, no flying Africans to whisk us off to the Promised Land.
The possibilities of a new focus on black humanity: our science, technology, culture, politics, religions, individuality, needs, dreams, hopes, and failings.
The surge of bedazzlement and wonder that awaits us as we contemplate our own cosmology of blackness and our possible futures.
The relief of recognizing our authority. We will root our narratives in a critique of normative, white validation. Since "fact" and "science" have been used throughout history to serve white supremacy, we will focus on an emotionally true, vernacular reality.
The understanding that our "twoness" is inherently contemporary, even futuristic. DuBois asks how it feels to be a problem. Olâ Dirty Bastard says "If I got a problem, a problem's got a problem 'til itâs gone."
An awakening sense of the awesome power of the black imagination: to protect, to create, to destroy, to propel ourselves towards what poet Elizabeth Alexander describes as "a metaphysical space beyond the black public everyday toward power and wild imagination."
The opportunity to make sense of the nonsense that regularlyâand sometimes violentlyâaccents black life.
The electric feeling that Mundane Afrofuturism is the ultimate laboratory for worldbuilding outside of imperialist, capitalist, white patriarchy.
The sense that the rituals and inconsistencies of daily life are compelling, dynamic, and utterly strange.
Mundane Afrofuturism opens a number of themes and flavors to intertextuality, double entendre, politics, incongruity, polyphony, and collective first-personâtechniques that we have used for years to make meaning.
***The Mundane Afrofuturists promise:***
To produce a collection of Mundane Afrofuturist literature that follows these rules:
1. No interstellar travelâtravel is limited to within the solar system and is difficult, time consuming, and expensive.
2. No inexplicable end to racismâdismantling white supremacy would be complex, violent, and have global impact.
3. No aliens unless the connection is distant, difficult, tenuous, and expensiveâand they have no interstellar travel either.
4. No internment camps for blacks, aliens, or black aliens.
5. No Martians, Venusians, etc.
6. No forgetting about political, racial, social, economic, and geographic struggles.
7. No alternative universes.
8. No revisionist history.
9. No magic or supernatural elements.
10. No Toms, Coons, Mulattoes, or Bucks.
11. No time travel or teleportation.
12. No Mammies, Jezebels, or Sapphires.
13. Not to let Mundane Afrofuturism cramp their style, as if it could.
14. To burn this manifesto as soon as it gets boring.

Written and directed by Greg Tate, Black Body Radiation is a short film that âimagines a future New York dominated by three rival, warring, black religious sects after two space ships mysteriously crash into Manhattan. Kulu, leader of a circle of priestess healers lives beneath the African Burial Ground. Through trance she is in communication with an alien artificial intelligence, an is able to intervene in the war between the sects in enigmatic, provocative and illuminating ways.â The film stars Karen Good and Michaela Angela Davis.

Project Description by Artist:
In the sixities a 5 year old Nigerian kid´s village was attacked by soldiers. His mother had left him home alone and he had to run away  escaping the bombs and the fire. He saved his life entering the Bush, this magical territory where no humans are allowed and where all the Yoruba spirits live and fight. Our kid spent  30 years lost in the Bush trying to find his way back home  amongst the spirits and the dead. He got married two times, became a king, a god and a slave, a cow,  a jar, a horse, a goat, ate gold, silver and bronze, snakes and snails, he fought 2 wars and was sentenced to death half a dozen times⌠all that  in just 100 pages. Amos Tutuola wrote â My life in the bush of ghostsâ in 1964 and then had to leave the country to escape the violent reactions to a book that would open in the exilium, a new path for contemporary African narrative. The story is told by the 5 year old kid in a very basic, direct, naive and repetitive style that only children master, but manages to convey the magical and absurd reality that war and religion added to the Nigerian reality. The series  â This is what hatred didâ (Mysterious last sentence of the book) aims to provide an illustrated contemporary version of this story adapting the characters, the space and the ambient to the actual situation of the country. The Bush is  now the Lagosian neighborhood of Makoko, a floating slum with its own rules, commanded by Kings and community leaders. A place where no logic seems to prevail and that is equally forbidden for those who do not belong. With the conviction that contemporary issues should be described in a way that includes the agent´s traditions, perspectivas, fears and hopes, this series documents the enhanced reality of one of the most iconic places in Nigeria according to the always dramatic media.

The Arthur C. Clarke Center for Human Imagination, the Clarion Science Fiction and Fantasy Writersâ Workshop at University of California, San Diego, and the Octavia E. Butler Legacy Network invite proposal submissions for a three-day conference June 3-5, 2016 in honor of Octavia Butler. We invite proposals for papers, poems, performances, playlists, prescriptions, potions, procedures, and processes in celebration, admiration, and analysis of Butler that highlight her life, published work, engagement with her archives, and explorations of her impact on humanity.
Her experiences as a working-class, quirky Black girl growing up in southern California profoundly shaped her life and writing. This regional gathering endeavors to engage these intersecting identities through multiple mediums and fields of study. We would like participants to consider how Butlerâs work helps us imagine a future where justice is attainable and differences are celebrated and consider the following questions:
100 years from now, how have we shaped change (through art, activism, and archives) in the world? What have we left behind that that we can draw from our presents and pasts? What lessons in Butlerâs life and writing will help forestall what seems like the inevitable collapse of human civilization?
Possible topics of engagement include:
