iâm gonna run this nothing town || solo
Everything was too quiet. She didnât trust it for one second.Â
There had been days, weeks, and months of mortal time filled with nothing but actual relationship counseling. Plotting with Pierce had been a nice distraction, but it hadnât done much to dissuade her boredom. The longer Zeus was gone, the more distracted she became from her present-day mortal cover anyway. Â
He never just left without straying. He couldnât be gone too long before her anger and sense of betrayal was building. And when she felt this angry, she wanted to take action. It was just who she was.Â
At first, she remembered her promises to him -- that she would leave his children as well as the son of Poseidon in peace while they were in this town. Other than the occasional run-in, she stuck to her word though it was very temping to not. But at this point, she really didnât think Zeus was coming back. They would reunite at some point in the future, in another place. She couldnât stand just waiting for his winds to blow him back, but there was enough here to keep her. Namely, the demigods.Â
And Hades, the insufferable bastard. She did not trust him. He couldnât be left alone here to have sole control over something on the Earth. That was not his domain and she refused to let it stand without someone keeping a watchful eye.Â
For many reasons, Jason was the demigod she found the least revolting. She knew heâd been Junoâs champion, and his work in the Greek camp had been exemplary. In some ways, she felt he mirrored her in his efforts to keep the family together and to appease the lesser Gods. Perhaps those were the only reasons needed to explain what drew her to him, to see what he would do and how would act in this weird time and place. Either way, she had been following his progress, even more closely with Zeus gone. Â
So imagine her surprise, on one night in the woods while out on patrol, maybe a little jumpy because sheâd gently persuaded an owl to be loud for no reason, when he harnessed his powers and managed to somehow circumvent the safeguards of town to let in some wind. Not just any wind. She recognized it almost immediately for what it was.Â
A town full of demigods and a monster she hadnât summoned, but could still redirect?Â
Really, the only question was where she wanted it to go. Â
You and I go hard at each other like we're going to war

âWhy have just one partner go insane?â Pierce shrugged. âWhile heâs forgetting she can be remembering or whatever you like. Slowly losing their minds in the process.â He suggested. âA true test of their love if you will.â
A slow smile curled over her face as she considered the implications of his plan. He was even darker than she was, and that was saying something.  âAnd what if their love doesnât withstand the test?â She asked, barely able to get the words out straight-faced.Â

That was another story for another time, perhaps for his safety a story to be told of the fourth of never, in the year of not happening. People tended to get touchy about conning someone out a soul. If pressed Pierce would omit his part in the explosion. Maybe it was time Pierce looked at his skill of gift giving⌠especially when it came to Mal.
Pierce smiled a devilish grin worthy of Boris Karloff narrating how terrible his idea was. âPerhaps itâs time then, for Dimitriâs deepest fear to come true.â
Hera had to admit, his mischievous, smirking grin could rival hers. She actually trusted that more than people who spoke pretty words or had grand intentions. She smiled.Â
âPerhaps it is. If you tell me his greatest fear involves a partner going insane, you may replace my husband as my favorite person to grace my presence today.âÂ

Nikosâ eyes were the epitome of someone softly chanting fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck as they avoided Heraâs glare. Nikos cleared his throat in the hopes that it would rid him of any shakiness. âThough at times a representative of Hades, my actions are my own and in no way reflect his opinions and he bears no responsibility and liability for said actions.â Nikos recited the disclaimer.
His immediate retraction and legal-sounding disclaimer made her laugh, loud and immediate. âOh, my he does have you well trained. You must be one of his favorites.âÂ

âThis is perfect, thank you.â It was starting to feel a bit like a polite competition between the two of them. âIt briefly blew up a while back, but the owner has since rebuilt it.â He may or may not have had an accidental hand in the explosion. Souls are fickle things apparently.
All of Pierceâs magic had a price of some kind, if not from the customer then from Pierce which meant he got sick as his lifespan took a hit. Oh the joys of voodoo. âThen Iâm sure weâll get on wonderfully.â Pierce smiled. He always did have a weak spot for women who could murder him if they so chose. It probably wasnât the healthiest trait to look for in a significant other. âIâm not too sure, but he certainly has it coming.â Pierce sat back and took a sip of his drink as he thought. âThe girl could frankly do better so really I was doing her a favor.â Pierce added off handily. âHe seems more distraught though.â
Hera arched an eyebrow, definitely intrigued with the it blew up aspect of any conversation. She didnât ask, though. Asking was too direct, at least in this moment, and it would also take them off topic. She wasnât inclined to drag this exchange out.
The rest of his talking points had her attention, though. She could do better versus heâs impertinent -- Pierce certainly knew his audience. He had come to the right place. She offered a cool smile.  âI can work with distraught. Itâs almost easy to play into fears and doubts when theyâre right at the surface.âÂ

âOhâŚâ Nikos mumbled as his eyes darted to various spots on the ground. âIâm bound to Hades more than I am his right hand man. Iâm actually left handedâŚâ
She fixed a stern gaze on him. He was absolutely not the smartest creature sheâd ever met.  âClever, but if youâre a right hand man, it has everything to do with your masterâs hands, and not your own.âÂ
twopartscourageâ:
âNah, not yet. Donât wanna spook her talkinâ about marriage if she ainât ready for it.â He figured they would have to have that conversation sooner rather than later. His biggest worry was that Tiana didnât take the gods and their punishment seriously, so she wasnât likely to consider this as big a threat as he did. That wasnât something he wanted to get into with Hera though, especially since she already seemed to like Tia.
Hera sighed.  âI will never understand the modern preoccupation with preparing for marriage.â It was ridiculous, by her estimation, to assume things had to be âjust so.â Marriage was, in some ways, a troubleshooting process. No two people could go through an entire life without changing; therefore, preparing was pointless when it would be much better to just make adjustments as life moved. Â

He was always nervous. âDo you want to?â It was a genuine question, if she asked for him to do a little dance he probably would have. It was better than annoying her further.
âDepends on the conversation,â she admitted.  âAnd the person Iâm speaking with. You as Hadesâ right hand man.... that might be useful. Nervous people are likely to reveal secrets.âÂ

For the most part, Hercules had gotten over the idea of Meg and Hades together. He didnât carry a torch for her anymore, and theyâd reached a point where they were almost mostly friends. Hera didnât ask though, and heâd already dug himself a deep enough hole without getting into that. He made a noncommittal sound at her observation about human stories. That wasnât a topic he wanted to pursue either. He was already more than a little sorry the conversation had gone on as long as it had. He worried he was just giving her more ammunition. âRiskinâ my safety is a different thing than riskinâ hers. I ainât the one who dies in the story.â
It wasnât often Hera found herself curious, because it was usually the case that she knew all the answers. Not knowing exactly what Hercules was talking about with the âstoryâ between he and Megara made her curious. It was an uncomfortable cycle. She nodded appreciatively. At least he could boast a brain cell or two when it came to relationship priority.  âThat is true,â she agreed.  âBut have you laid the facts out for her and does she agree? Or are you just ignoring something she really wants in hopes nothing bad will happen?âÂ

âI can, yes.â Pierce actually preferred his scotch on the rocks (more preferably whiskey stones), simply because he enjoyed having a bit of cold before the burn. He did believe that watered down scotch or any alcohol was a sin, which tended to be the problem with ice. âI tend to prefer the Black Dragon, but to each their own.â Pierce said, he wasnât about to insult her family (even if it was only the in-laws) in her home.Â
Pierce took his drink with a nod as thanks. âWe had a disagreement with how I conducted some business with his girlfriend. I may or may not have taken her memories of him as payment for my services.â He shrugged as he swirled his drink and took a sip. âI had him arrested afterwards, but I still donât approve of turning the other cheek when bruised. Iâm more of the eye for an eye kind of guy.â Pierce was more of the take two eyes and maybe a tongue for an eye kind of guy. âWhat did he do to you?â
âDo you prefer it some other way?â She asked. Part of being a hostess, she knew, was meeting a guestâs expectations. She didnât know this man well enough to deride him yet. She arched an eyebrow. âIâve never been, or heard of it, but I am open to the trip.â
A new place to drink, especially with those more classy than tended to flock to Hadesâ establishment, was always welcomed.Â
Hera raised her eyebrows appreciatively as he described his misdeeds. Her most recent foray into that particular field had been the means to a specific end (survival), but she had enjoyed other, similar tactics before. While it had been solely for her own pleasure, rather than something requiring payment, she found she didnât mind his reasoning, either. In spite of the fact that it interfered in a relationship. âEye for an eye lacks a certain creative flair for me,â she explained. âBut I appreciate its undertone at least.â She sipped from her own drink. âHe was very disrespectful. No punches were thrown, but I have a bit of a hair trigger. What did you have in mind as his penance?âÂ

âOf courseâŚâ Nikos nodded, still avoiding eye contact. If he wasnât so terrified he would have asked if his mother lived a good life.
âDo I make you nervous, Panikos?âÂ

âScotch, if you have it.â Pierce told her with a smile. It didnât slip pass him that it wasnât a question and that she seemed to be struggling with being civil. He was unexpected and likely unwanted. âHades owns it, correct? Iâve met him once a while back. Charming.â It was the same kind of compliment as a southern womanâs âbless your heartâ, as in it wasnât a compliment at all. âDimitri.â
Pierce sat up and leaned closer. âLook, Iâm going to just cut the bullshit for a second because we both have things to do Iâm sure.â Besides he was pretty sure if he kept up the nice charade for too much longer he would get a cavity. âThat skinny man with the nose said he crossed you and heâs crossed me. Now I have certain skills that come in handy with these kind of things, but it gets tricky when I use it to help myself. So it tends to help with the red tape if it benefits another.â Pierce explained. âAnd maybe you might have your own skill set to add to mix and make it sweeter.â He leaned back again with shrug. âInterested?â
âI do,â she said, turning to fix his drink.  âDo you take it neat?â She didnât think there was any other way to take Scotch, if one were drinking like a human, but others had their preferences. Who was she to tell them they were wrong? (That didnât mean she wouldnât. It just meant they were perfectly entitled to be wrong.) She gave him an amused little âhmmâ when he actually described Hades, and the Underworld, as charming. It was almost worthy of an actual laugh.  âThat may be the first time Iâve heard that word used. But it is something, isnât it?â A cesspool, an eyesore, a blight upon the town.... those things, maybe. Those were some things.Â
She made her drink to match his, and slid to her seat with purpose, both drinks in her hand. She passed his to him and drew a long pull from hers before she answered. She did rather appreciate his directness.  âI just might be,â she agreed with a nod and shrewd smile. âWhat did he do to cross you? Letâs compare notes on his impertinence as a beginning and weâll see what suitable punishment we can come up with.â Â

He rubbed his jaw and decided not to even touch the subject of Hades and Meg with her. Heâd have come to Megâs defense if he thought she needed it, but otherwise, it was safer not to get in Heraâs way. âStory ainât real clear on the why,â he admitted. It was, but he didnât want to bring up Zeusâs infidelity. He felt like sheâd set up a minefield with her questions, and he was trying to pick his way through it without saying anything that set her offâwhich didnât come anywhere close to his strengths. âSame ending, I guess. Better not to have a family if theyâd be in danger just âcause theyâre mine.â
Hera watched his discomfort with satisfaction. She wondered if the idea of Meg and Hades stung at him. Everyone had known of his feelings for the waifish brat and his attempts to rescue her from Hadesâ grasp. Whatever the resolution had been hadnât been as clear, possibly because Hera was preoccupied with other mundane things at the time.  âHmm. Thatâs the curious thing about human narratives and legends, isnât it? They donât really know why because they didnât really create the situation with a purpose in mind.â Then again, there was always the possibility he was full of it. She hadnât really looked into the mortal publications on Greek events here. Perhaps that would go on her to-do list (toward the bottom, because she didnât care.) She gave a snappy little laugh. Â
âNot having one at all isnât the same ending,â she pointed out. âIn fact, that sounds like no ending at all. That sounds to me like someone who is afraid to take a risk.âÂ

That was something at least that Pierce and Hera could agree on, first impressions mattered. She focused on dominance and power while Pierce was more interested in fear and control. âI would have it no other way, Hera.â Pierce kept his friendly demeanor as he followed her through to her office. The green walls were somewhat unnerving to him with all the themes of nature. Pierce much preferred the comfort of buildings lined up against each other than a forest.Â
âYou have a lovely home.â He told her before gesturing to a chair. âYou mind?â Only hesitating a moment before taking a seat. Pierce needed her to like him at least somewhat, but he wasnât the type to be completely submissive. She needed to know he could hold his own as well. âA little bird at the Underworld tells me we have a mutual acquaintance of a bartender there.â Pierce smirked at he got a bit more comfortable. âI think we can help each other.â
While she had interest in the qualities of a home, she had no interest in the particulars. That they had a lovely home, however sparsely decorated, was no thanks to her. Other than demanding it be that way, she had no idea how it had gotten to be as it was. She offered a small smile.  âThank you,â she said. It was only polite.
âNo, please do,â she said.  âAny of these chairs are for guests. Since youâre not one of my typical clients, I can offer you a drink, if youâd like one.â No, it wasnât phrased as a question, but she was trying. Sort of. She rolled her eyes, but it was almost a sideways gesture rather than a typical, dismissive one.  âI suppose that depends on how loosely you use the word âacquaintance.â But it is my brotherâs bar, so Iâm familiar with a few of the staff. Which bartender and why do you ask?âÂ
