Build A Fantasy, Take This Reality Away From Me {Self Para}
She had begun to lose count of the days she had spent alone, waiting for the Reaper to pay her his daily visit, to rake her skin raw, to brand her, to torture her, to wrap his hands around her throat and laugh in the moments following. She forgot what it felt like to see the sun, and as the Angel of Death, had never thought much about it before it was ripped from her cold and cruel hands. If she had been human, she would have relinquished her faith in God, but she was not. She had known him once, in another life many lifetimes ago. She knew that he existed, and that was perhaps the worst part of all-- to know that he had all but given up on her. If he had not, how could he allow such a thing to happen, such cruelty. How could he even allow the Reaper to escape? Had he truly forsaken them or was it just her debt to pay? Had she lost herself, as Cole had said at the memorial? Had she wound up so far from God that she was irredeemable? Was the Reaper a harbinger from their Heavenly father himself? Then again, the way things had been, maybe she would never know.
Closing her eyes, she gave one last tug on the reinforced steel cuffs wrapped around her wrists, but after being starved and beaten, her yanks were more like weak pulls. They held her chained to the same chair she had woken up in. She hadn’t moved since. Her head felt like shit, and most of all, she was angry. She wanted to blame everyone and everything, sink her fangs into the first red blooded neck she could, and then into the Reaper himself.
“Ah, ah--” came a chiding voice from inside her head that she had come to know so well. “Thinking thoughts like that will only anger me. I do not think either you or Abbadon really wants that.”
“Shut up,” she hissed back mentally, though even the voice inside her head felt weak, like a disattached voice box of a girl who vaguely resembled Laney McLeod. Then again, she hardly resembled anything of herself after what he had done to her.
The room around her was dark, grimy. The scent of rotting flesh found its way to her nose, though she knew it was from the preserved eyeballs in the jars lining the shelf pushed against the far wall. As she had come to learn, the Reaper liked to keep the eyes he had taken the careful effort to carve out himself. It was a bit tacky for her taste, but utterly grotesque all the same. Some said the eyes were the windows to the soul. He had not so subtly suggested that by stealing them, he was preserving their souls, trapping them in a state of limbo as the Blue Bloods had done to him. “Bitterness doesn’t suit you, babycake,” she had remarked when he told her. Of course his speculations held no truth, but she wasn’t about to tell him. “Let him keep his damn eyeballs for all I care,” she thought. “What does it matter to me?” Her own thoughts felt drugged, and as the scratching in her throat began to scrape at her sensitive flesh, she closed her eyes.
“One moment... one moment of rest,” she murmured to herself.
“Eloise, are you listening? It is of critical important that you attend this luncheon. It is for ladies who intend on sending aid to the confederacy, and not to forget that it is necessity that you display your patriotism for the South, lest the townspeople think you are a Yankee sympathizer.”
Tilting her head high, she narrowed her gaze into cool slits. “I shall not be ordered by anyone to do any such thing that poses an inconvenience. I have promised a possible suitor my long and lonesome day so he may attempt to court me. Though we both know I refuse to marry, again, to keep up appearances will only benefit us and our community that we’ve built here.”
Shifting her gaze to Ellen, her mousy and irritating conduit, if Eloise had not the need for such luxury, she would have been happy attending to matters herself... but it was in good fashion to show appreciation for the Red Bloods that swore their lives to your service, and if there was an extra hand to help tighten her corset, who was she to turn it away? It was the height of the Civil War, in 1863, and most of the men had gone away to war. Those who remained were craftsman or too elderly to serve. That was her reality.
“Why must you lead this poor boy on? You already have all ... the forms of sustenance that you need in the house,” Ellen said quietly, leaning into her while referencing Eloise’s carriage man and butler. The two young women were having a picnic under her plantation’s willow tree, but there were servants and slaves milling about. They had not the privacy to take such liberty with their identities. Casting a disdainful look at Ellen, Eloise stood abruptly, hands fiddling with the bow tied around her waist. Why were all of her conduits such disappointments? Since Renata and Rome, she hadn’t had another that pleased her nearly half as much nor understood what she needed at any given time.
“I’m terribly worried for my brother so, it will do me good to get my mind off of other things,” she smiled, hissing her words through gritted teeth. She could tell the women washing the laundry in the river next to where she and Ellen sat were listening closely, scrambling for the least bit of gossip they could get in a time of disappointment and death. “During a time of war, it is best to find distractions, no?” she asked, tilting her head in silent challenge. She muffled a cry of surprise when Ellen grabbed her wrist and rose beside her, her eyebrows furrowing in anger.Â
“Do not treat humans as your playthings, Eloise. They are people, with lives and families.”
“You do not realize how easily I can make your life very difficult. You do not tell me what to do, yes? I can take your job amongst other things. I do not think you want to get on my bad side,” she snarled, leaning her face close to the smaller girl. Eloise was larger in both reputation and stature, and her conduit shriveled beneath the harshness of her gaze.
As she was about to slap the girl out of pure rage, a familiar voice rang behind her.
“Now that’s no way to greet your dearest brother. I much prefer your face to your back, though the stitching of your corset is finely woven and threaded.” She could almost hear his wink before she turned to see his face. Immediately, her face brightened and Ellen’s indolence fell from her mind.
Dropping the parasol she held tightly in her hand, her feet carried her running straight to her brother. Jumping into his awaiting arms, tears of joy fell in waves down her face. Wrapping her arms around his neck, the idea that she should ever let him go again seemed like an impossibility she could not even begin to fathom. Though the two had caused a stir in the setting of the plantation, after a stone hard look around at those who had paused their day’s work, all productivity resumed. Kissing his cheek as any sister would a brother, he swung her in a large circle, the bottom of her dress blooming like a flower.
When he set her down, she leaned in close to his ear, the scruff of his face unfamiliar to her soft cheek. “Don’t you ever leave me again,” she whispered. Everything about him seemed different, but he was still the same Abbadon and the same man he left. Though his arms were thicker and he bulkier, he had the same eyes... the same twinkling blues that laughed when hers cried.
“War may be my mistress, but you are my one love. I will come back to you.”
“You must. I expect nothing but.”
“Those Yanks didn’t know what hit them,” he said with his usual lopsided grin. Weaving her arm through his, she waited for him to pick up his luggage before heading into the house. “Ah, how much I have missed home...”
Laney awoke to the sound of metal being sharpened, the serrated edge of a blade scraping while sparks flew from it. Staring at the Reaper in the corner as he set to work with his preferred method of pain for the day, she spat to alert him that she was indeed, awake. If he was going to torture her, she would bear the burden of the pain. She would not cave, would not give him what she knew that he wanted: the gratification derived from her suffering. When he walked behind her wordlessly, she expected the sharpness of a blade against her skin, she expected to feel her own blood floating over the top of her skin, she expected-- and that was where her error lay.
Because when he pressed a burning poker into her shoulder blade, she couldn’t help but let out a despairing moan, lips pressing down on her teeth as she attempted to keep from crying out. She could feel the skin peeling under it, the gash opening where he had roughly stabbed her with the burning metal. Before she could even describe what it truly felt like, he jammed the poker again into the same wound he created just moments before... and he kept doing so, again and again and again, until she cried out for him to stop... but he wouldn’t. The burning just kept coming and coming and soon it felt like he was prodding her everywhere, rather than isolating one place for repeated torture. The places in her back where he had already broken skin through, he shoved the poker even deeper inside of her, until she felt it hit bone. Every time he did this, it gave the rest of her body a moment to heal... to cover the burns that encapsulated her entire back, but the Reaper knew this, and carefully kept his torture evenly spaced on her skin. Bone, flesh, bone, flesh. She had never known such pain-- though she was unsure what hurt more... the separation of her twin and the possibility that she may never see him again, or the physical pain that filled every single of her five senses with an inescapable brokenness.
She wasn’t sure how long it had been or how long it would continue, but all she knew was that her screams had been reduced to nothing more than shallow pants before she fell unconscious with the pain of the burning coal pressed into her memory and her skin.

if the heavens ever did speak she’s the last true mouthpiece.Â
â–ˇ {cackles in the distance}
â–ˇ for your muse to fall on mine and land on top of them
It took cycles for laughter to rush to the air in frequent bursts of sudden light. It took longer for him to feel at ease with the world, to see the color return to the faded life that cloaked his vision once his memories returned.
But Aamon was healing in this new world named Roanoke. And the laughter had yet to cease flowing forth.
“Remember the rules! Anyone caught by us in the prison will chase others the next round!”
A chorus of children voiced how they wouldn’t dare be caught, and he only smiled in return. Peering down to his partner, he asked, “Are you ready, Agnes?”
“Of course I am. Do you think your old bones can manage such a youthful game, Gregory?” The girl, barely three and ten years (and so close to feeling the pain of her past cycles), smirked at him with a mischievous glint.
“If you consider twenty and three years old, then you might need to question why others my age are playing.” At that, he gestured to the few men and women tied to younger partners, and though he heard some complaints, there were grins that spoke of clear anticipation of a win (and there were others gathered, watching from the sidelines, thin-lipped or with stares of judgement at their actions. But this was never about them). “I assure you, I’m the best partner you’ll have as we catch these couples.”Â
“I would hope so! Which person should we focus on first? So if they switch partners to avoid us, we’ll head in the same direction?”
He smiled in praise at her quick thinking and peered around. A flash of blonde hair caught his eye, and his smile turned to a smirk. “How about your nemesis?”
Agnes matched his smirk, nodding with such approval he thought she would become dizzy before the game would start. Such was the vigor held within a girl who thought another was swooping in onto the man she had a love for.
Youthful infatuation — it was something to be cherished before the memories latched to the present. Though that time would be amusing if it meant he could see Agnes’ look of pained disgust as she realized her crush was already taken, and had been century through century.
Licking his lips, he crowed, “We begin on three!”
“One!” the children shouted.
“Two!” Agnes joined with a scream.
“Three!”
He and Agnes had to stay behind for a few more seconds as the other couples dashed forward hand-in-hand, squealing as they ran away. But with a squeeze, he nudged Agnes to lead the way, forcing himself to keep at her slower pace as she ran as fast as her nimble legs could take her.
They changed directions often ( for the adults knew this game well, and Agnes seemed to forget that this enemy of hers would wield her experience to her advantage at any given moment ), but they wove their way past people changing partners, and he pulled ahead of Agnes so his hand could wrap around the arm, a jarring sense of muscle beneath his fingers —
“Got you!”Â
“Gregory! — ” Â
It was a force at his back that sent him lurching forward, his chin slamming on a shoulder. Agnes’ screech resounded in his ear as a THUMP echoed. And he, oh, he sprawled on the ground so quickly his head spun, with a pressure at his chest that took all his breath away —
There were a few moments of silence. Not even the sounds of others running around could register with him. He blinked at the sky, trying to heave breath after breath. And then:
“I cannot believe this.”
Closing his eyes, he began laughing. He hauled himself to his elbows, snatching a glimpse of Agnes already pulling herself to her feet with fury in her movements. And he would join her standing, truly, if it wasn’t for the blonde woman n his lap trying to gain her bearings. As she looked to him, he merely grinned.Â
Which was the wrong idea, as she lifted her chin and adjusted herself so she sat properly on him, bringing her hand to his shoulder.Â
“Perhaps I can believe this part, A a m o n. I always wanted us in this position.”
Oh, he could feel the blood drain from his face. “Azrael — ” he exhaled, his voice low as to not confuse the young ones with her real name.
“If you wanted my attention like so, this is certainly an inconvenient way. So many people.”
“Azrael, please – ”
“Ah, I always like those who beg – ”
“You are horrendous,” he said, and he meant to be stern, meant to be offended because even if their kind were the only ones living in the village, there were still morals to hold. But he felt the laughter bubble in the back of his throat, and he could not contain any of it.Â
The blonde seemed mildly shocked as he chuckled, as the sound grew to echo across the field, but something flickered in her gaze before she smiled. She moved off him with no more to say, and Aamon pushed himself to his feet first so he could offer her his hand.
“It’s your turn in the prison,” Agnes said once they both were stable. She seemed somewhat smug; the girl was battered as they were, but she held her head high at the fact Azrael had been caught.
“You’ll be back there by the next round.” Azrael smiled, and Agnes faltered in her stance. “Or maybe Aamon shall. He seems to like the opportunities being there brings.”
With a smirk, she brushed past Aamon and Agnes, never looking back. Aamon held his smile as he wrapped an arm around Agnes’ shoulders.Â
“I told you I was a good partner,” he said.
“I believe I heard your bones creak when we fell,” Agnes mumbled.
Aamon’s laughter echoed once more, and it never ceased.Â
♦
“Did you really think you could slip away so quickly?”
He hummed, though a smirk easily slid across his face. “I’m afraid you would have longer-lasting fun with the others.”
Her grip tightened on the crook of his elbow, though her smile betrayed nothing. “I wasn’t going to miss the chance to dance with the best looking soldier tonight.”
Aamon’s chuckle was too small for the anxious mirth that filled the rest of the room. All the men were rowdy, drinks flowing through their veins as they held hands with the ladies crowding the area. Each were desperate not to let the silence linger; even with the band playing in the background, the silence of conversation meant minds would drift, and there was only one thought that would overwhelm them with horror.
         {{ “You’re not supposed to interfere with human matters, Aamon.”              “This isn’t interfering,” he says slowly, rubbing his forehead,                  “It’s what should be done.” His conduit huffs, and he knows               what she will say as she opens her mouth. “Thou shall not kill.”            “I’m already forsaken. This – He will add this to my tab of sins.” }}
Azrael still held onto him, her fingers unrelenting with digging into his skin, and he swallowed the lump that refused to leave his throat. “I’m not going to be good company tonight,” he whispered.
“One dance,” she said, her voice stronger than his. He had to smile at that. “One song, and then you can return to your base.”
He licked his lips, letting both of their thoughts drift before he finally nodded. By then, the band had stopped to allow the light to focus on the pianist and violinist, and a smooth voice (one that wished he was Frank Sinatra) began to serenade the crowd.
“Now this can compare to the 1800s,” she mused, a devilish smile appearing as she led him to the floor. A hand rested on his shoulder; his pressed against the curve of her waist. She pulled herself too close; he pushed her back to a modest distance.Â
“You’re no fun,” she murmured, and after that, they stayed silent. Maybe she drifted closer again, and maybe he let her. The song crooned over their heads, wrapping them both in the sound of solemnity. When she rested her chin on his shoulder, he took a quick breath and forced all his fear to his heart and locked it away.
Death wasn’t a stranger, but it didn’t make passing any easier.
“Remind Xi Wangmu to bring me back in a decent number of years,” he said, trying to make his voice light. “Tell him thirty years is pushing it.”
“I might tell him. I make no promises for something like that,” she assured, and he chuckled again. She wouldn’t tell him to stop talking of such things; they didn’t know each other that well. And yet, she had insisted this, insisted he took the time for something he could hold onto, and he was grateful for it.
When the song ended, her fingers tightened on his shoulder again, and in the next moment, her lips brushed his cheek. It was quick, something harsh in its warmth. “Don’t do anything reckless, Aamon. I hate to think your destiny would involve being foolish in war.”
“It has before,” he said, the corners of his mouth reaching to a smile that barely made it.
“If I hear about heroics, I’ll convince Xi that he shouldn’t bring you back for a century.” Pulling away, she released him, and she slipped into the crowd without looking back.
He closed his eyes, taking one breath and holding it.( Father, hear my prayer — ) In the exhale, he was gone, and the music sang a goodbyeÂ

Just because Joseph Morgan and Candice Accola have amazing chemistry, it’s kind of a headcanon of mine that in Azrael’s past, she had one human familiar that she was particularly fond of, just one. He was a familiar that she grew far too close to but would never admit her feelings for, out of loyalty to her bondmate to whom she would travel the ends of the Earth and back, and the unsureness of her own feelings. Émile tested her in every way imaginable, which also entailed loving her unconditionally even when she was in her foulest moods. She never got to tell him how she felt before he was accused and, without a fair trial, executed before her very eyes in the French court in 1652. She was twenty three and a noblewoman. He was a baker accused of stealing and hoarding bread during a time of famine. This was untrue and, as she later came to find out, was orchestrated by another Blue Blood who was angered and jealous by the power she and her brother held over the Clave. They had hoped that Émile’s death would force her into submission, but the power play failed and she convinced Xi Wangmu to wait half a century before calling them into another cycle.
What Have You Done {Self Para}
Waking up in the basement, only a flickering light bulb hung squarely above her head. Tilting back and forth, she winced. Her head hurt, it throbbed, her surroundings blinked in and out of focus as her vision faded to black… back and forth with the light, back and forth. She could only hear the sounds of where she was, the crackle of the spark from the lightbulb, the skitters of rodents dashing through the walls… and his footsteps, coming from what must have been a staircase. Everything was woozy though, and she just wanted to lay down. Pulling at her restraints, her head lolled back and forth, blonde curls covering her face, her hair matted with blood. I… just… want to lay down… let me lay down.. .down… down… sleep. She wanted to stay conscious, she did, but she was so tired and her body hurt everywhere. It felt like every bone was broken. Maybe they were, for all she knew.
When footsteps appeared in front of her eyes on the ground directly before her feet, she tried to lift her head, she really did, but she couldn’t. Despite her own battered state of being, wrists shackled to a chair made of steel, she couldn’t help but smirk at his decorative flair. Though she had no strength left to look up at him, she couldn’t resist making taunts where taunts were due.
“You’d think… that… after grabbing me, the least you could do is bring me somewhere a little less–” she broke off, her throat scratching with dryness. It burned like hot flames, licking, peeling away at the sensitive tissue inside. She wanted water, needed blood, and craved both. “Cliché?”
“Where would be the fun in that?”
“How are you in my head?” she croaked through a muffled moan, biting down on her lip to keep an admittance of weakness from slipping out.
“You make it far too easy.”
“And you, with your gloomy fashion sense and all your five thousand and one distasteful ways to kill humans, you think that I’m scared?”
“You aren’t?”
“You’re an coward with a vendetta, you can’t even show your face and your tactics are hardly originals,” she sneered, spitting at his feet. “Join the club-- but I’m warning you, you take a backseat behind Lucifer dearest. You’re just not that impressive...” she trailed off, her eyes blinking shut, over and over and over again. Even the weight of her lashes felt like too much.
“Will I be impressive enough when I take your life?”
“That will never happen.”
“Who will save you?”
“I don’t need anyone to save me. Abbadon will kill you before that happens. You’re going right back where you came from. You’re a flash in the pan. May as well call you Carly Rae Jepsen. All these ways you’re demanding attention, clearly we should have paid you more mind... rung on you sooner or whatever you’d have liked--” she trailed off. If she could have rolled her eyes she would have. Oh how desperately she wanted to look into his face, to see it... but she couldn’t. Too weak. Too weak. “You men with your ego.”
“You’ll be dead, as will the rest of them. Your time will come.”
“Yeah whatever. Screw off. You messed up my hair.”
“When I kill you, Abbadon will lose his bondmate, and he will lose the strength he draws from you.”
“Again with the blah de blah blah scary talk,” she taunted, though she knew she really was in no position to. “Go back up to your house or whatever this piece of shit you’re keeping me in is called.”
“Talk all you want, you’ll be dead soon enough. Wiped clean from the face of the Earth as though you never existed.”
“That’s kind of hard to do. Have fun painting over the billboards, buddy, if you haven’t noticed, my face is everywhere,” she said, her words slurring though she was far from being intoxicated. Merely another nasty side effect of being held prisoner by an enemy Hell-bent (literally) on enacting his psycho revenge. When he finally fell silent, her breaths relaxed as she settled into a vague sort of slumber, her mind falling empty though her eyes were still wide open... glassy and vacant. So long as The Reaper stopped trying to communicate with her, she could pretend he wasn’t there. Mustering all of the strength she held inside of her, in her empty mind, she only sent out one word, a desperate, shrill cry for help.
“Abbadon...“
Would he hear her? Perhaps, given the circumstances, she would never know.
However, much like the way he did everything, the Reaper had lulled her into a false sense of security, and once her guard slipped for a moment, she felt a blade sliding across her collarbone. Had he just been standing in front of her? Watching? She couldn’t know. Where was he? Was he here or there? He blended in with the darkness that enveloped the room, and considering she could see no more clearly than the blind rats running through the walls, she was as vulnerable as they were too.
A scream erupted from her throat as the gash spewed blood, the blade glittering in the light of the hanging bulb. Squirming, her hands instinctively tried to reach the wound, the stop it from bleeding... but the blood flowed, onto her designer shirt, dripping across her skin. With a growl, it was evident the Reaper was most displeased when he grabbed a fist of her hair.
“Your beloved cannot hear you. It is you and I in here, Azrael-- all alone... and my, aren’t we going to have so much fun?”
The last thing she could feel was his fingers, cold as they were dead, dipping in her blood, exploring what lay beneath her skin.
And then she couldn’t feel anything, anymore.
Was this what it felt like to be dead?

How long had it been since the memorial exactly? Surely only mere days. And yet, in his state of sleep deprivation they all seemed to blur together. He hadn’t been home since the memorial, he hadn’t been anywhere anyone would expect him, thinking somehow it kept him safer. Somehow it kept everyone safer. Perhaps it wouldn’t quite make sense to anyone else, as presently it held little logic in even his addled thoughts. Though he flinched slightly at his twin’s touch, Lincoln still knew better than to pull himself from it–Laney liked to go for blood when her victims struggled.Â
Apparently I can, a glimmer of his ordinary self quipped at her words, apparently he was better at hiding than he thought, but even that wouldn’t keep him from the danger he faced. His home wasn’t safe, his own mind was not even safe anymore…and if he wasn’t safe, neither was Laney, neither were the others. “Ever been to Santorini this time of year, Lane? Hm, no, too close…what about Trinadad? Let’s go, you and me, right now,” his voice wavered even as he suggested it.Â
He hadn’t missed the memorial, he just hadn’t felt particularly inclined to make his presence known, keeping to the sidelines. Maybe that had been his mistake, maybe the crowd would have kept him safe–that was just a lie he told himself, for surely this was something even Lincoln McLeod could not outrun.
“We can’t just board on a plane and jump this ship, Lincoln, you’re being delusional... you’re a child. You’re reckless, and this is a mess I can’t clean up for you. I don’t know what’s in your head or how to fix it. I wasn’t the one who made him angry enough to kill hundreds of innocent people!” she whispered. “This is you-- it’s all you,” she said stepping back. “More people are. going. to. die. Bollocks, Abbadon, do something.” She wanted to grab his shoulders, make him understand-- but the more the Reaper carried out his grand schemes, the more it seemed to send Lincoln cowering into a corner.
She knew he would be of no help to the Clave, but forcing herself to accept that he was not ready to be the hero, was the challenge. She still had hope. She loved him, so she wanted to believe in him. She wanted to believe the lieutant who had stood beside her all those thousands of years ago was still in there. He had to be... but she also knew that she would not allow her belief to shield her reason. She would not allow her belief to kill her or those around her that she loved, including Abbadon himself.
“This is your responsibility to bear, don’t run away from it. From him. This is what he wants you to do. These people, these last Blue Bloods, they are the last semblance of everything that makes us who are. Don’t you realize there are no other Blue Bloods that can be called into our coven? Don’t you realize their blood is all burned... because of the Reaper?! You don’t get it,” she hissed, grabbing his sunglasses from his face and tossing them to the ground.
I will not die for your pride or your fear.
He had been so quiet as of late, despite the messages she sent, she couldn’t have been sure if he had just heard her at all. Lincoln was nothing but radio silence as far as the eye could see.
Schoolgirls and Their Teachers | Flashback
Absently wiping his hands on the side of his thighs, Koji used his shoulder to push the bathroom door open. Even in such a prestigious school as St. Agnes, the men’s room was not exactly a hygienic area, and seeing this one wasn’t teacher exclusive, he had no doubt of what the boys hiding there had been touching before they touched the handles. Hence, he would stick to the old, trustworthy routine of elbows, shoulders and feet, thank you very much.
A series of thuds distracted him from his musings, and he looked up to see a blonde girl before him. A pile of books laid by her feet, probably knocked over by the door. Oops. A great start to his second week here. He covered a wince, before glancing at the girl’s face as she snapped at him. No, absolutely not. He was not starting off the day by getting into some stupid argument with a teenager, no way. As he opened his mouth to tell her just that, he noticed the shift in her gaze, going from anger to something very familiar. l u s t. A confident smirk made it’s way to is lips, and his gaze swept over her body before settling back onto her face. This, this he could definitely deal with. “Glad I could be of service. And thanks, I’m starting to enjoy this place.” And he would, if this kept up. Pretty, young, impressionable faces and lots of free time. And here he’d thought being a teacher would be boring.
Walking into her classroom, Laney adjusted her skimpy skirt that was three inches above St. Agnes imposed dress code and fluffed her hair, trying to ignore the blush blossoming across her cheeks from the interaction she had just had in the hallways. Thankfully the teacher hadn’t arrived yet, and, settling in, she cast her icy gaze around the room, cool enough to chill those who may have tattled on her tardiness into frostbitten silence. St. Agnes was her school and these were her halls. The people in it were merely there for population purposes, density filling at the most. Like little ants, they moved at her beck and whim.
Pulling out a notebook, she set to work labeling her name at the top in perfect slanted handwriting, sleek and curled in all the right places. Hardly even casting a momentary glance up when the door opened, she pulled out her phone from her bag. She had little regard for whoever the new teacher was and following rules was not exactly her favorite pastime. Besides, her father had donated a lot of money to the school. Getting on the McLeod’s bad side wasn’t in anyone’s best interest. Forgetting the messages she had received just moments earlier about the attractiveness of the new history teacher, she texted openly and unabashedly, holding her phone in front of her face. Turning to one of her minions sitting at her side, she gave an arrogant smirk. “If this class is so important, monumental, yada blah blah all that good stuff, then why is it that I couldn’t care less about it?” she whispered, knowing full well her behavior was already intolerable. Oh well.
Clothes wrinkled and mismatched, hair askew, and eyes encircled with a blue-gray hue, there was nothing pristine about Lincoln McLeod. His face was not alight with curiosity or amusement, and even his skin seemed to have traded it’s glow for a haunting pallor when he finally emerged from the depths to which he had retreated to following the memorial service.Â
Where had he been? What on earth was wrong with him? The tabloids would surely speculate–let them, he though simply and halfheartedly.Â
Skirting down the walk, the hood of his large gray coat drawn over his head, his sunglasses were the only thing to keep other’s from noticing how his eyes darted quickly and nervously across each face that passed him as he went. Tucking his hands into his pockets, he turned abruptly, feeling as if he were being followed. “Can I help you?” he hissed.Â
“You sure as Hell can,” Laney hissed, her hand snaking its way to his wrist, grabbing it. “Where have you been? Do not feed me some line, and take those ridiculous sunglasses off of your face. You’re Lincoln McLeod, not Johnny Depp on vacation. You can’t hide even when you want to.” She refused to let him go until he gave her an answer that appeased her rage, and if he dare struggle, the further her nails would dig into his skin.
Do you realize how useless I sound when I say that I don’t even know where you are? Where have you been Lincoln? Where have you been? You made me look like a fool. I was alone at that damn memorial. You should have been with me, I should have been with you.
Her eyes softened for a moment before an expression of rage and disgust filled her features, taking over any hint of pity she had felt just a moment ago. Looking at his disheveled state, her face contorted into an ugly frown of nothing but bitterness and anger. “What is happening to you?”
