hobi’s rap style utilizes different tones and volumes and noises.

if you listen closely to some (and more than you think) of bangtan’s songs, you’ll find that hoseok’s voice is implemented as if an instrument. 

he repeats words, adding emphasis, echoing to create layers, making sharp and memorable sounds that have life which synthetic means could not create.

where applicable, he’s smoothing imperfections and gaps, molding and sanding a consistent canvas for the music and also serving as an emulsifier, needling specific phrases of the song in your head (e.g. parts of baepsae), even supplementing with his vocals in the background of the i need u chorus.

he uses his voice as a damn instrument, a work of art, in the same way he uses his body.

he has no style? what? read from the top again.

again, can you really say he’s not equally important to the music when he’s the one who helped get the song stuck in your head? that catchy part of your favorite bangtan song? he might’ve had something to do with it. been whispering it in your ears the whole time before the beat dropped.

during more relaxed performances where he’s not focused on choreo or symmetry, like all force one aka the best day of my life and other performances of the cyphers, he at times maintains eye contact with the rap line, backing them up, intensely attentive to his members, and critical to what he may need to add to elevate, challenge, and support them.

you think he’s just a ball of energy, all over the place, completely natural and relaxed and loose and in his element on stage? partially, but take a closer look.

he’s usually the first to notice any inconsistencies, anything that doesn’t fit, anything that’s off. like i said, attentive.

you think he isn’t paying attention? he’s so aware, always searching, actively scanning, and anticipating while he’s on stage during these times.

he is an analytical performer, very much in control, and he’s always looking at something on the stage, taking in the environment around him, planning, calculating, always choosing the perfect openings.

this is most obvious on stage, but this is also who hoseok is, and how he manages himself. these are vital parts of his personality and inner framework.

this is why his personality and persona are so effective. again, he knows openings, he is in sync with people’s reactions, he is aware, maybe painfully so. this is why 1verse is what it is, why he approaches his mixtape the way he does, why he calculates, second-guesses, and critically reinforces every angle of what he creates and executes and in turn, deeply cares about (watch his hope on the street v app for one of many examples).

and these are just a few examples of many.

this is why he helps lead them in dancing, in choreography, in anything that needs to by synthesized, because he can notice an inconsistency a mile away and neutralize it, he can spot an imperfection and demand it’s perfected, he can support what isn’t strong and when he can’t, he feels off balance.

he is aware and he’s also a perfectionist, constantly chasing the unattainable. hoseok is a layered person, hypersensitive and hyperaware and critical of himself and everything and everyone around him.
