I'm still really happy with this silly drawing I made for a recent animation, haha.
Thinking about loving characters for their flaws:
Something thatās been on my mind recently is how thereās an odd group of fans across all fandoms who think that to enjoy a character, you have to think theyāre flawless. That all their traits must be positive and that they canāt ever have done anything wrong, and if you do, you hate them and thatās bad.
But sometimes itās fun, or even the point, to understand that an entertainingly evil character is evil. Or that a good character who makes mistakes or gets a little overexcited can still be good.
To stop vagueing, Iāll use Nemona from Pokemon as an example. I love how sheās this battle-obsessed girl whoās surpassed all her other peers to the point where theyāre afraid of her even though she just wants a friend to battle for fun. And thatās why she expresses such possessive and obsessive tendencies over the protagonist when they prove to be a worthy rival to her. But Iāve noticed some fans get really defensive whenever someone playfully jokes about Nemona being crazy or Yandere-like, saying āHow dare you joke about her being a stalker and a yandere!! Sheās just a nice normal girl, and she doesnāt deserve your HATE like this!!ā
But I love Nemona as a character BECAUSE sheās so passionate for battles and friendship that it can come across as being a little crazy in comedic ways. The story has many instances where yeah, her eagerness and addictive tendencies are supposed to come across as overwhelming to the other characters. Her dialogue in some scenes is deliberately creepy and a little forceful at times for the sake of comedy, and there are multiple instances where they lampshade how she as an NPC literally cannot take no for an answer from the player. But when people point this out, does it mean they hate her or think sheās bad? No! It's because they did a great job writing a unique and memorable character with a strong set of personality traits and beliefs!
And honestly? I like how obsessive Nemona is because I relate to her a lot! Iām also obsessed with Pokemon battling and teambuilding and finding friends with a shared interest and equal competitive spirit, and I know I can be very single-minded and tunnel-visioned in how much I hyperfixate over this stuff. I can empathize with Nemona's plight and lonliness while also having a laugh about how she can express it a bit inappropriately at times.
Another example- Iām currently writing a webtoon based on Greek mythology and Iāve been avidly reading through all kinds of old myths for research and inspiration. And since Eris is the protagonist of this series, it also portrays Zeus and Hera in a more antagonistic light, mainly since Eris is more of a villainous figure in mythology, and naturally they would be against her.
But when I mentioned that Zeus and Hera have done some pretty bad stuff to children in mythology (both their kids and othersā kids), I got a few really angry comments, like āHow dare you!! Zeus and Hera are actually really nice!! Itās because of the evil Roman agenda trying to slander them! They actually arenāt bad at all!ā Even though Iāve been using Greek sources like Plato, Homerās Iliad and recounts of the Cypria for research. Or āThis guy doesnāt know ANYTHING about Greek mythology! Most stories about Zeus and Hera show them as really nice, and thereās only like 8 or 9 of them that mention them doing evil things!ā Even though those stories are also valid, and someone doing evil things once let alone 8 or 9 times is still pretty awful. And again, I donāt hate Zeus and Hera. I find them to be extremely complex and interesting characters who give us an amazing insight into the views of the culture that wrote about them.
I donāt know, it just seems like a really weird stance to say the Olympians of all people were always nice and flawless, when I swear a big point of their stories were made to contextualize how the cruelties of life must have been perpetrated by actively malicious or uncaring beings. As if the embodiment of a storm or a flood or a famine or war itself could ever be a truly kind and friendly person. But at the same time, it doesn't mean they were all pure evil either. Personifying concepts literally means making them more like people, and all people can do both good and bad things.
Like, itās fine to enjoy characters who have done bad things or have bad beliefs as long as you donāt let it affect your own beliefs. It doesnāt make you a bad person for liking evil characters for what they add to their stories. And if someone mentions that a character has flaws, it doesnāt mean they hate the character, and it certainly doesnāt mean they hate the story that character comes from, or the people who wrote them.
I love Surviving Earth and its creature designs so much, I just had to draw one of my favourites - the Cymbospondylus! It gives me so many nostalgic memories of the Opthalmosaurus from Walking with Dinosaurs!

Disclaimer: I can't really watch Obsession in its entirety because I know it'll actually trigger me in many different ways, the least of which being how much I stress over wish-themed stories.
Bonus:
Just saw Supergirl!
I had a lot of fun practicing art styles for this- Ruthye is inspired by Gurihiru's art (one of my favorite art teams ever), especially how they draw eyes! Lobo's crazy proportions are based on his DCAU design, just with Momoa's look instead. And Kara is drawn in more of my own art style!
But yeah, it's a good fun movie! Directing and editing a bit choppy at the start and it could have been more colorful, but the effects and the acting were great! 8/10, would recommend!
It's always sad when a cool-looking Mega Evolution gets a disappointing ability and stats.

My campaign for a physical attacker Mega Sceptile continues!
I tried incorporating a lot of my favorite design elements alongside common Mega design trends!
It's based off a Therezinosaur, with the arm blades from the original Mega Sceptile now as its claws- and the tail looks more like a palm frond than a conifer. The blue accents come from Charizard and Mewtwo's X Megas also having more blue on them (RIP Raichu X breaking this trend but still) and the colored belly, longer snout, and head leaves come from Grovyle since a lot of the new Megas borrow traits from their pre-evolutions!
Meme #1160
(This one was labeled by my wonderful sister who only knows about Pokespe through osmosis. She called it āthat one preformer guy with the head injury? I forgot his nameā as a way to refer to Wallace. I think she mixed him up with Steven dying lol)

Look out- here comes the Scarlet Spider Spider-Scarlet!

Eris: Goddess of Chaos' biggest problem is that it was written to be a niche show aimed at weird analytical queers with actual media literacy and-WOULDN'T IT BE FUNNY IF THIS WERE REAL?? Haha I'm just kidding- be careful though, apparently there's a giant rat around!
Dumb references aside, I'm not really writing Eris for any specific audience, but I still know queerness is a major part of Greek Mythology! So I'm doing my best to take it into account while still making a fun and emotionally sincere satire that I hope people will like!

Late night thought: A remake of Horton Hears a Who but it's Superman hearing an even smaller version of Kandor that Brainiac shrunk, while Lex Luthor plays the role of the Kangaroo who thinks Superman is just being performative and tries to stop him.
Is this anything?
