Where Is The Location Data Stored?

Now in the device manager expand the Disk drives section. Just right-click the device and choose Properties. Choose Policies tab in the Properties window.  You would notice that Windows say that you disconnect USB device safely without using ‘Safely Remove Hardware’ icon. However this is misleading.

Danger of corruption of Data  

If you unplug USB device while data being written to it can result in corruption of data. Irrespective of the option you use ensure that the USB device is not in use before unplugging it. There are some USB sticks which may have lights on them that blink when they are being used.

Even if the device is not in use it may be in-use. In the background a program may be written to the drive. Corruption of data could occur if the drive has been unplugged. If the USB device does not appear to be in-use then unplug it before corruption data. To be on the safe side use ‘Safely Remove Hardware’ option. When a device is ejected Windows would tell when it is safe to remove.   

Caching

If Better Performance option is selected Windows would cache data instead of writing it to USB device immediately. This would improve the performance of device.  Data corruption is likely to occur if the USB device is unplugged without using ‘Safely Remove Hardware’ option. If caching has been activated Windows would not write data to the USB device immediately.  Even if it appears to have been written and all file progress dialogs are closed, data may be cached on the system.

After ejecting the device, Windows would flush write cache to the disk. This ensures necessary changes are executed prior to notifying when it’s safe to remove USB.

Quick Removal option reduces USB performance. However it’s the default to lessen the chances of data corruption. Several people forget to use  or even never use the option when unplugging USB devices.

Search for anything from the Start screen and it would automatically search for web results. Though this is useful it might use useless data. You can turn it off. 

Either Bing search can be turned off or settings can be tweaked like whether personalized results using location should be given or not or turn safe search off. Normally whenever you perform any search from Windows 8.1 start screen you would be presented with list of search results from the Internet from the Bing search engine. Some users like it and some hate it. Follow these:

First open the charms menu and choose "Settings." You can open charms bar by pressing Windows+C

The plug-ins of Internet Explorer are called Plug-ins. For instance the flash player is an ActiveX control. However they have been posing huge security issues. Do avoid installing Active X unless you are confident about its source. There are certain ActiveX controls which are normal say for instance you have Flash player Active X control installed. More the ActiveX are installed more the websites would take advantage of their issues to damage the system. You can uninstall ActiveX which you do not use as it would reduce threat of a bug attack.

The latest versions of IE include Protected Mode, ActiveX filtering which prevent weak ActiveX controls from running. However they are unsecure by their architecture and not much can be done to make them secure.

If you click the gear icon in IE and select manage Add-ons. Click box under show and choose all Add-ons. You would have several common ActiveX controls installed throughout the system like Windows Media player, Adobe’s Shockwave Flash and so on. You need to uninstall them from Control Panel if they have to be removed from the system.  

Facebook has introduced something new. Other than posting normal status updates Facebook allows you to create custom status updates with emoticons. Recycle bin is temporary storage for files which have been deleted in a file manager by the user. However they are not permanently erased from the file system. The user though can browse deleted files, restore them if required or deleted them accidentally.
