Clarice Phelps, a Tennessee State University graduate, became the first African American woman to help discover a new element on the periodic table, Tennessine (Ts), element 117.

Her remarkable 20-year journey led her from serving in the U.S. Navy to conducting groundbreaking research at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, where her work made this historic discovery possible. Now pursuing her Ph.D. in Nuclear Engineering, Clarice continues to inspire the next generation of scientists to break barriers and redefine what’s possible.

@newsstoriez, Robert Thomas opened the first Black-owned grocery store in Houston, Texas, last November.

He converted his nightclub into what is now known as District Market Green Grocer, the city’s first Black-owned grocery store.

His market sells fresh fruits and vegetables, and offers products from more than 40 Black local businesses.

Thomas has always been interested in nutrition. He told The Houston Chronicle about the idea behind his store. “There were long lines outside of the grocery store during the pandemic. This resulted in the creation of pop-up shops and farmers’ markets. I began to say to myself, why aren’t these products are not in big block stores. This gives me an idea to create a place for these small business owners to sell their products.”

The History of the Pan-African Flag

Also known as the United Negro Improvement Association (UNIA) flag, the Afro-American flag, and the Black Liberation flag. The distinct red, black, and green Pan-African flag was created in 1920. Sometimes also called the Marcus Garvey flag, it was meant to serve as a marker of freedom, pride, and the political power of Africans in America.
