The Republic Tigers - Buildings and Mountains
we drink our wine, and wonder why weāre really here
whatās the point of even asking?
we take the good and bad
and make the best of it.
I want all of these hanging at my wedding when I get married outside in October. So romantic and so sweet and so lovely.
Just you and meā¦Ā

A whirlwind of action Evelett was used to. She nodded to the stranger as he passed her on his way down. āMy pleasure, Iām sure.ā She mentioned before nearly throwing herself in after the Doctor, narrowly missing him and landing on the bed close to where the oil lamp was kept. The pitch black of the room pressed on your eye balls until Evelett managed to flick a match smart enough to light. The flame burst against her retinas and stained themselves there for a moment. She looked up at the stranger as he spoke again in a rambling stream of words, blinking away the spots in her eyes so that she could see his face properly. Well, as properly as she could in the light provided by the old lamp. āDisguise yourself as a Nazi? Well thatās a story you must tell, spot of dinner?ā She offered her own plate that had been passed to her by her sister. āYouāll have to mention in that story exactly how you know my name and why a doctor of any specialty would have to disguise himself as a Nazi when you would be welcomed on either side with open arms. Men of medical knowledge are in high demand if you havenāt noticed.ā She commented, sitting so that she stood in between her sisters and the Doctor. Amiee seemed unaware of any possible threat that the good man could possibly possess and smiled, standing on the cot in the corner, the one on whose edge Evelett perched, and extended her small hand. āIām Amiee! Do you have any stickers?ā āAmiee, itās not polite to ask for things.ā Sarah admonished. āBut Doctor Tommy always had them when I broke my armā¦ā Amiee whined. āYou should never ask for anything.ā Sarah continued reprimanding Amiee who finally sat down to quietly eat her meager dinner. All the while Evelett stared at the Doctor, cross examining him for any hint of a threat. No gun holster under his tweed jacket, no strap for a boot knife, his hair was long so he hadnāt been into town recently, his shoes were not dirty so he hadnāt walked here however she hadnāt seen any car or horse out front so he may have people who knew where he was. A bomb rocked dirt loose from the hand dug ceiling but still Evelettās intelligent eyes were unwavering. The only moment that she blinked in surprise was when she met the Doctorās eyes, for they were far too old to be in a face too young, even during these times when young boys had to become men far too soon. āSarah, let Amiee beā¦ā Evelett finally said, her eyes lingering upon the Doctorās, there was something there, something hidden⦠She couldnāt quite figure it outā¦

Rain boots, long coats, and a rabid will to live despite the terror going on around, the peal of childhood laughter slaughtered the air. It was as if the world was holding its breath,...
Thunder rolled, making the ground shiver as though the sound itself was the harkening harbinger angel of death like so many bombs that now flew over the city, cloaked by the clouds and the darkening sky. The thunder gave way to the low rumble of enemy planes that flew overhead, mumbling to a growing roar. Somewhere there was a scream in the far distance as people began to take notice. All around them, everyone evacuated their houses and ran to shelters buried in the ground. Evelett and her two sisters were not excluded from the rush of people. Evelett was the first to burst open the front door, not looking out to where the Doctor now stood, but at the girls, grabbing their plates, a jug of water and hurrying toward her. āCome on, no time to lose.ā She said, her voice loud but rather calm. āYou too,ā Evelett said suddenly, turning to the stranger in her doorway. āIāll not have it said that a stranger died in my doorway. If youāre carrying any weapons or are a Nazi youāll simply have to wait until after all this to make your move.ā She said in all seriousness, her sisters brushing past the Doctor on their way quickly to the side yard where a homemade shelter door lay. It was a refrigerator door (back in the day those were lined with led) but like so many things in this world, the door was deceiving for the inside was much larger than the outside. Evelett heaved open the door and ushered her sisters in before turning to look up at the stranger. āCome on then, donāt just stand there.ā

Help for an undiscovered encounter with danger was on his way, unbeknown to Evelett and her sisters. However the danger was still in the future and the world seemed to know that the right of things would soon be thrown askew. "Inside now... before...." Evelett looked up at the sky, a foot planted on the first step to the porch of a rattle-tatted house, paint chipped and wood blackened from an old, long ago fire. The window's boarded up against the grey skies, now darkening as the moon gave rest to the sun. The air. There was something in the air. Like a dampening or a pressing from far above but sensed withing the back of the mind. It was as though something was- "Come on sis! I'm starved!" Sarah exclaimed, pulling on Evelett's arm. Evelett woke up to the present and smiled at her sister. "Ok alright, lets go eat." She said, following her sisters inside with one last apprehensive glance to the uneasy sky. She shrugged it to the back of her mind. Unrest in the atmosphere wasn't unusual these days with all the bomb attacks and fighting. The constant, ugly fighting. It would consume the whole of mankind, Evelett was sure of it, she only had to hide her lost hope for mankind from her sisters. God knew it was hard.
Inside the home, furniture was sparse and what was there was worn and stained with soot. The hardwood floors no longer had proper staining and showed a layer of dust. The tired house creaked and groaned, leaked and drafty, and it was home to these three girls. Even though outside was cold and the house was old, the kitchen bloomed with radiance warmth of a home. A wooden cup, a metal mug, and a partially smashed shotglass stood as a bold crown on the counter as Amiee poured milk. A pan without a handle, a cracked stone plate, and a newspaper served as the plates for which Sarah was serving up steaming meats. A handmade hole in the wall above the fireplace served as an oven and a cloth wrapped arm served as a means to get the baking bread inside. But there wasn't a tear, or a whimper, or a hint of a sad face in the mix. Life was as it was and they made the best of it, humming show tunes or lullabies as they cooked their simple meal.
Evelett:
Rain boots, long coats, and a rabid will to live despite the terror going on around, the peal of childhood laughter slaughtered the air. It was as if the world was holding its breath, waiting, waiting for a terror it knew was coming no matter what it could do. Instead of screaming, it held its breath. Everyone did except the three girls racing through the rubble scattered streets. Arms stretched out wide as the comings of a storm announced itself through tiny rain droplets. Gas masks worn about their necks, one girl so small the gas mask nearly slipping off her shoulder. "Faster or I'm going to catch you!" Evelett was the oldest of them, but only physically. Where was the fun in living if you didn't actually live. Forget stopping to smell the roses, wave at them as you race by. Hands spread out wide, the other two girls, her sisters of much younger ages peeled the air with their high pitched laughter. Evelett was nearly twenty and the only care taker of these girls now that their dad had gone to war, and their mom dead in a blitz bombing. Always got to keep your chin up though. If you were looking at the ground you'd never notice if a bomb was dropped on your head. You'd just be dead. "Faster! She's gunna catch us!" Amiee, the youngest of only four, ran as hard as she could but was falling behind. Her shoes too big, her dress dirty and baggy, she did try her hardest. They were returning from the grocery store when all the sudden the alarms went off. Fueled by adrenaline the girls had dared fate and raced through bombed out streets to their home. It was a small two story with a big wrap around porch. The grass had been green once, but since the water was rashioned they couldn't waste it on the ground. Amiee was caught eight yards from the house. "Gotcha!" Evelett laughed, leaning down and scooping the squealing girl up in one arm, foot ball style, the bag of groceries in her other arm. "Better run Sarah, you're next!" Sarah, nearly fourteen, screamed a laugh and raced into the house just as a bomb went off, not too close, but enough that the ground shook. "Oph!" Evelett tripped and ended up on the ground, surrounded by child, fruits, vegetables, and bread. She threw back her head and laughed before throwing herself back on the grass. "Oh you got me!" She put her hands to her chest and then hypothetically gave up the ghost. She lay still until her sister ran and jumped onto her stomach. "OH!" Evelett jerked upright, sputtering. "Not a good move." She laughed, never stopping it seemed. Even in the darkest of moments she was laughing, bombs going off around her. Crazy? Certainly! She lived in London, without a bunker, in the middle of a blitz! "Come on now, time to make supper!" Evelett said, heaving off the ground and bending to pick up her groceries.
