Oh my god I love you.
I love you.
Evelett:
Rain boots, long coats, and a rabid will to live despite the terror going on around, the peal of childhood laughter slaughtered the air. It was as if the world was holding its breath, waiting, waiting for a terror it knew was coming no matter what it could do. Instead of screaming, it held its breath. Everyone did except the three girls racing through the rubble scattered streets. Arms stretched out wide as the comings of a storm announced itself through tiny rain droplets. Gas masks worn about their necks, one girl so small the gas mask nearly slipping off her shoulder. "Faster or I'm going to catch you!" Evelett was the oldest of them, but only physically. Where was the fun in living if you didn't actually live. Forget stopping to smell the roses, wave at them as you race by. Hands spread out wide, the other two girls, her sisters of much younger ages peeled the air with their high pitched laughter. Evelett was nearly twenty and the only care taker of these girls now that their dad had gone to war, and their mom dead in a blitz bombing. Always got to keep your chin up though. If you were looking at the ground you'd never notice if a bomb was dropped on your head. You'd just be dead. "Faster! She's gunna catch us!" Amiee, the youngest of only four, ran as hard as she could but was falling behind. Her shoes too big, her dress dirty and baggy, she did try her hardest. They were returning from the grocery store when all the sudden the alarms went off. Fueled by adrenaline the girls had dared fate and raced through bombed out streets to their home. It was a small two story with a big wrap around porch. The grass had been green once, but since the water was rashioned they couldn't waste it on the ground. Amiee was caught eight yards from the house. "Gotcha!" Evelett laughed, leaning down and scooping the squealing girl up in one arm, foot ball style, the bag of groceries in her other arm. "Better run Sarah, you're next!" Sarah, nearly fourteen, screamed a laugh and raced into the house just as a bomb went off, not too close, but enough that the ground shook. "Oph!" Evelett tripped and ended up on the ground, surrounded by child, fruits, vegetables, and bread. She threw back her head and laughed before throwing herself back on the grass. "Oh you got me!" She put her hands to her chest and then hypothetically gave up the ghost. She lay still until her sister ran and jumped onto her stomach. "OH!" Evelett jerked upright, sputtering. "Not a good move." She laughed, never stopping it seemed. Even in the darkest of moments she was laughing, bombs going off around her. Crazy? Certainly! She lived in London, without a bunker, in the middle of a blitz! "Come on now, time to make supper!" Evelett said, heaving off the ground and bending to pick up her groceries.
