because with that silence, our own imaginations can really bite us in the ass if we’re the kind to worry and question things deeply

He sank a little in the study’s chair and gingerly cupped his hands over the crude wooden table. Trapping the air within his hands against the rough surface. To draw from and manifest from the same forces that over time he bonded with still seemed so surreal. Yet he bit his lip, allowing his mind to drop every thought and sink into nothingness. To reach out with invisible limbs and gently cling to the first familiar tendril of energy. It didn’t grow angered or throw him off, not like it would have if he grasped it and demanded its assistance.

There was a pause, an assessment to gauge his intent and he didn’t fight the prodding. Only until it was satisfied did the flow relent and the surge of energy flooded in. This time instead of shaping a devastating spell, every last drop was pushed into the palms of his hands. When the final few drops were squeezed out, he moved his thumbs aside and opened up his hands, frowning. Nothing.

Knoll cupped his hands once more and sighed as he rested his forehead on the table with a resounding thunk. Summoning, perhaps, was something he will have to study more of. He clenched his thin hands for a moment before dropping the tension. It will likely take months, or years. A slimy, squishy feeling slicked against the inside of his hands, wiggling impatiently. He furrowed his brow and peaked up. Nothing had been there before, why would there be now? Just as he thought to drop his head back down the near gelatinous wiggle squirmed again and he moved his thumbs just enough. A thick, inky bead grew into a blob the more it squirmed out of his hands caging it. A pair of bright white eyes blinked into existence on the black ball, and they made eye contact. Awkwardly staring until the blob grinned with a featureless white mouth and shaped a pair of nubby ears, vague rounded nubs on what he could only assume was the blobs back.

With the utmost care, he moved his hands away. The inky ball plopped back into the rest of the goo, jiggling a little and squeezing its eyes shut for a moment. It’s alive and could register feeling. Curiously, Knoll curled a finger and brushed it against the ink. It jumped, turning in a way that reminded him of a slug to watch his finger before it eased its eyes closed. Not only could it feel, it can register what’s a threat and what’s not, what hurts and what feels comforting.
