'The Swan Maiden' illustrated by John Bauer, 1908

Taking a photo of it with my phone is very hard. I have very mixed feelings, I enjoyed painting it and I'm feeling excited about doing things again but I'm also disappointed - because I think it would be more solid illustration if I did it digitally but I just don't want to. I know I can do good work digitally but it bums me out at the moment. Sitting at computer all the time is making me depressed. I tried a trick I learned from anime background painter videos, and used a ruler and paintbrush supported with pencil, like I was holding chopsticks. It was pretty exciting that it worked , not that it shows very well- my painting is kinda whimsy partly on purpose partly because I am not good enough but it was kind of a revelation, like oh I get it. It is possible to make very intricate detail. There's a cool clip of how Akira backgrounds were painted at the beginning of this video: https://youtu.be/BMwNilk-YyE they're not using a pencil though but some plastic tool.
