Micha Cárdenas: Why she kicks ass

She is a transgender artist/theorist who works in performance, wearable electronics, hacktivism and critical gender studies.

She is a PhD student in Media Arts and Practice at University of Southern California and a member of Electronic Disturbance Theater 2.0. 

Her book The Transreal: Political Aesthetics of Crossing Realities discusses artists’ strategies for using multiple realities such as; augmented, mixed and alternate reality, and the intersection of these with the politics of gender.

She holds an MFA from the University of California San Diego, an MA in Media and Communications with distinction from the European Graduate School and a BS in Computer Science from Florida International University. 

Her publications include “I am Transreal”, in Gender Outlaws: The Next Generation, Trans Desire/Affective Cyborgs and Becoming Dragon: A Transversal Technology Study in Code Drift.

Her artwork and collective projects have appeared in publications including Art21, BBC World, CNN, Los Angeles Times, Rolling Stone Italy, Wired, Vice Magazine, Missy Magazine, Art as Authority, Dr. Dobbs Journal and her writing has been featured in the Inflexions journal, Digimag, NewMediaFix.net, Augmentology.com and in the San Diego Reader. One year ago today, I hurriedly downed my first anti-androgen pill. Later that night, I stared into my reflection in the mirror to silently eulogize a body that had done its job, and was now to be relieved of it’s duty. To give way to one more capable of shouldering the burden and responsibility of what was to come.

Sometimes all you need is a big, floppy hat.
