Even if in a thousand other lifetimes he’d never been able to curl up on Yue Qingyuan’s chest like this, listening to his heartbeat, even if their paths had diverged in bitterness, even if the red thread tying them together had snapped, its recoil tearing a great and unhealing wound in each of their hearts…

In This Lifetime, At Least While trailing one of Wu Yanzi's targets, Shen Jiu encounters a fortune teller in the market who tells him that the red thread tied to his soul is frayed, but not yet broken. Moments later, he runs into Yue Qingyuan, who had come to the city searching for Wu Yanzi. Their eyes meet, and a few small ripples change fate's course entirely. Rating: M Words: 5473

Whenever Yue Qi held court, Shen Jiu would be there next to him, or lurking behind the throne, a dark and menacing shadow of Yue Qi’s warmth and benevolence. He would keep watch the whole time with eyes sharp as daggers, occasionally leaning in to whisper something into the emperor’s ear, to which Yue Qi would nod his head gravely and then whisper something back in kind.

Qijiu week 2025 - day 6 - Immortality/truth curse

Even when they were small, starving children, Yue Qingyuan wouldn’t cry— and now, it seemed like he couldn’t stop. He began to struggle hard against the ropes that bound them, his glassy dark eyes bloodshot and distant, as though his mind was locked away somewhere far from here, desperate to escape but unable to do so.
