alright, write tiem
in lord of the rings, the names of the hobbits are not their actual names; as the story is supposed to be an ‘english translation of westron,’ all of the westron names, including frodo’s, are translated into english as well. in the ‘original westron’ so to speak, his name is maura labingi, and in sindarin is lorhael. frodo comes from old english fród, meaning wise by experience, which has the same or similar meaning to his westron and sindarin names.
and then in metroid, they say that the word metroid means ‘ultimate warrior’ in chozo but that makes zero sense considering that since the chozo had beaks, they weren’t capable of labiodental speech and couldn’t make 90% of the sounds necessary to even begin to pronounce the word metroid. so why the name metroid? well apparently according to hiroji kiyotake, it’s because “we attached ‘android’ to ‘metro subway’”
hmm... tempted to ignore the 2003 manga as a part of samus’ canon and reshape her backstory... hm...

ZEBES AESTHETICS : LOWER BRINSTAR.
Geometrically doomed timeline
anyway loss is one of the central pillars of samus’ narrative and you can pry that from my cold dead hands
me, rolling out of morph ball into your room: listen it’s very important to know that the chozo were a species that died off slowly; they fit a lot of the criteria for a precursor race but unlike a lot that we see in popular media (halo’s forerunners, me’s protheans for example) there was no great calamity that snuffed out the chozo and all of their splendor. their people did not fall, they declined.
samus is not born into the chozo’s golden age; by the time they take her under their care their empire has long since collapsed. instead they live quiet, introspective lives as their numbers dwindle, seeking knowledge simply for the sake of knowledge, searching not for glory but the mystery of things beyond even their comprehension. they are old, and they are tired. and she knows that her grandfathers will leave her, because they must, but they are not ripped from her like her parents were. there is no fire and violent death, instead a quiet sigh as they depart for distant shores, for higher dimensions, and she is left behind. and it’s a different kind of loss than the one that brought her to them in the first place; it’s a quieter ache, muted by duty, and she copes with being abandoned by her second family by turning herself into the bastion of their ideals.
like the chozo her interpretation of this is something fluid, ever-changing as the universe around her shifts. she has nothing but relics and memories and she becomes defined by ‘what’s left behind.’ this is one of the reasons she’s consistently unable to permanently re-integrate herself into society, human or otherwise. she’s an individual who relies on a foundation and past that no one else has a connection to, and works for a future that’s not meant for her. like the chozo that raised her she’s always looking forward, but as a result it’s very difficult for her to live in the present.

the franchise has spoken, samus returns (twice!)
im gonna play some super metroid so like this for a thing !
[[Samus being a friend to nerds is an amazing headcanon that I support 100%. I'm just picturing some GF soldiers giving some research team a hard time until certified-BAMF Samus walks over and gives them a verbal smackdown. Does she mostly hang with the history nerds 'cuz of Chozo research, or is she friends with geeks in other fields as well?]]
it’s definitely a mixed pot! samus herself is very multidisciplinary, and that extends into the academics she interacts with. i would say that those in the history and anthropology fields geek over her the most; not only is she the last of the chozo, but she’s a human as well, and being a child of two worlds makes her more aware of certain details a native chozo would overlook or neglect to mention because they’re so normalized in their culture or history to the point of being ignored. those specializing in ancient civilizations both living and dead get excited by her a lot, as references to the chozo tend to pop up in the relics of other precursor races across the universe.
those with expertise in xenobiology and adjacent fields like her a whole lot too, some organizations or teams will put ‘bounties’ on specimens or samples they want her to collect for research, or will pay for her to run experiments in the field. it’s reassuring for some of them to know that their work is being handled by someone who understands it well enough where it won’t be mistreated. she has her own rules for what she will and won’t do ( no sentients, for example ), but she also collects her own samples and data as she explores planets and there are those who are eager to get their hands on that information, too.
there’s a sort-of cult that’s formed among academics from many different fields that would give literally anything to get their hands on samus’ powersuit. bio-mechanical engineers, particle physicists, nano engineers, quantum programmers, even some art historians... the list goes on. this group isn’t to be mistaken for those who have actually tried to capture samus for study or steal her suit, but rather they just tend to hover around her and ask questions, because they all know the chance of actually being able to run some tests on it is next to zero. probably got a group chat / forum somewhere where they all debate various theories of her suit, and share new ‘information’ they’ve gleaned. samus’ open nature with her own research and work does not extend to her powersuit, and much of the details about it remain a mystery.

if you call samus ‘sammy’ she will chokeslam you. gandrayda got away with it because she was pretty much a kid in samus’ eyes, but she does not tolerate it from others. ‘sam’ is only acceptable if you’re close. it’s just samus.
exactly, you dumb bitch.
