mutuals/followers who are involved in historical research especially the late 18th century in new england:

this is the only object in daniel brown's house in cambridge mass in 1785 that i cannot identify for the life of me.

the context it's in is a room containing beds, clothing, kitchen/cookware, and for some reason "forty-one new scythes".

i'm reading it as either "Slam Bunk" or "Ham Bunk" (leaning toward "Slam" based on the rest of this particular person's handwriting), but nothing comes up when i search either of those terms, even with dates added. it looks like it's worth 1/6 of a penny if i'm understanding the notations of value correctly

anyone with insight please let me know

#I usually deal with earlier than 18th century but. with the little experience I do have with documents from this time period #i’d say that is definitely slam. and if not #i’d sooner say flam than ham here #either way though. my immediate thought is that this could be slang for a settle bed?#since those would slam into place and function as both storage and a bunk as needed #and slam in colonial woodworking usually indicates a wooden board that hinges #which would track with the seat/chest cover of a settle bed #would also track with the obvious storage functionality this room holds (with kitchen supplies and So Many Scythes along with bedding)#but that is all speculation #this is why i stick to print work lol #the update with it being a different type of folding bed truly has me feeling so vindicated right now #am i good at paleography? no <3 #but god damn can that art historian clock an item in an estate record #now if only that power could be harnessed to find all of the potter paintings from the fagel sale 😭#what do you mean it is a painting of cows….all his paintings are cows….
