He appreciated the compliment, and the acknowledgement of his skills. It was always nice to have them recognised, and he would never turn away an opportunity to have his ego stroked. “Perhaps there would have been, all depends how good you would actually be. Whether you’d actually give me a run for my money is still debatable.” The PI did have talent, and whilst Anthony had used private investigators in the past to dig up evidence to help in his cases, he thought it was a talent that was wasted. He could understand the appeal of being your own boss, but the money wasn’t always consistent, and Anthony would never go back to living hand to mouth. “So, you don’t feel like a career change?” Maybe he could have this guy as his own personal investigator. It would certainly help to have a man like that on his side.

Could always recognize people’s hard work, and or skills. Though he hardly doled out remarks. Given most people he didn’t care to play nice with or probably offend by pointing things out. Plus his job would be on the line if ever did especially with criminals. Only a people person in theory most the time it seems. 

“Perhaps, just one of those unknowns and likely not. Would have been an interesting situation either way.” 

Ideally, Anthony should have consulted with the higher ups about whether he should be taking this deal or not. He didn’t answer to them entirely, and was free to pick and choose his clients, but they did like to be kept in the loop; especially if any decision someone who worked for the firm made could impact the business negatively. However, Anthony could tell he’d been given a good deal, and he wasn’t going to wait on them to make a decision he could easily make himself. They were lucky to even have him, so whatever reprimanding or complaints he got later on for keeping him in the dark didn’t matter. It would be a mistake if they tried to get rid of him, he’d make sure of it.

“Good, so this stays between you and me.” Smiling, he got out his stylus and signed the document on his phone, making sure to save a copy for himself; just in case the guy tried to turn this back on him if it all went tits up. “I have to say, you made a very compelling argument and the deal you presented was a strong one.” Leaning back on his desk, he looked the man up and down. “You ever consider becoming a lawyer? You’d make a good one, not to mention how good you’d look in a suit.” Yes, he was flirting, but as business was now over, he saw no reason no to. “Yes I agree, avoiding any deaths would be preferable. I’ll send the files to you before the end of the day.” He didn’t want his client to die, but only because the man brought him a good pay cheque whenever he ran into some sort of trouble. Outside of that, he couldn’t care less what happened to the man.

Far he could figure would be a pretty straightforward case. Especially with the boost of information. Obtained legally or close enough to it. Sure things could go pretty south; he wasn’t placing any bets. Yet if so then that’s a bit on the people who let him have the tossed aside case files in the first place. 

That was not expected. Of course sure it happened occasionally but next to never. With any sort of attorney or lawyer it was certainly a first. “Thank you.” Putting his hands into his jacket pockets. “Can’t say I ever considered it; but clearly if I had there would have been tough competition.” 

If he cared about morals, he would have been ashamed or feel some guilt about using a loop hole which was a shady one at best, just so his name would be clear. Luckily, his morals were very different to other people’s, and he didn’t feel guilt. When he was younger, he had wondered if it meant something was wrong with him, or if he was broken in some way. It was only as he grew older and became more experienced that he realised that what he lacked was actually a good thing. It gave him an advantage that few others had, and made him one of the best lawyers in the city.

“I assume that my signature will be kept confidential?” His name and association might be kept off record, but those that had worked with him enough times would recognise his signature. “Not trying to be difficult mate, just thorough.” Taking out his phone, he looked at the document, skimming over it whilst he waited for his answer. It was a pretty air tight document, he couldn’t have written it better himself. “What are you gonna do when you find him? Just for the sake of curiosity.”

Far he was concerned the world could very morally ambiguous. People especially; and lawyers were a big example. Not that he really cared. Sure made for some annoying people. But same went for really anybody and everybody. Fascinating from psychological standpoints. Usually a pain otherwise. Except for the odd exceptions, or those who weren’t annoying in his eyes. 

“Of course; likely won’t even be shown to anybody aside from me. Who already is privy to the deal we’re making.” Slipping his phone back into his pocket. “I get it, full respect makes it easier on both ends.” James considered the question really it depended on what happened. 

“Yeah, well. Sometimes trauma makes you forget, but other times it can’t be forgotten.” He pulls on his coat as he leads the way outside, hand automatically reaching into the pocket to wrap around the pillbox. It’s raining, of course, but only lightly, barely more than misting. 

“Beautiful dog. I’ve got a corgi. Not nearly as elegant, but she’s sweet.” He’s getting the distinct impression that James isn’t particularly interested in making friends, or doing anything really except his work. Archie understands the feeling. Given the choice, he would act the same way, but as the head of the task force he’s required to at least make an effort. Besides, he’s naturally wary of outsiders walking into his headquarters, since the last person who did that ended up cutting out his spleen.

“And anything in between the two.” The light rain was nice. He was one of the sorts who probably didn’t mind stormy weather. Of course he preferred to not psychoanalyze himself. Trying to not analyze everybody else was much harder. Not saying observations was the best he sometimes got. 

That….that was a good idea. A loophole that Anthony was happy to allow, and to work with. He had no idea who this guy was, or why he really wanted the information; but he was smart. Anthony could respect that. “If you can promise it won’t come back on me, and that my name won’t be associated with this…mess in any way, then we have a deal.” Anthony wanted to protect his reputation, and he wanted to make sure he didn’t get penalised for breaking confidentiality. “Send the document to me, I’ll give it a read over, and if everything is in order, I’ll sign it and you can have whatever information you want.”

So that was the right choice; then again he didn’t even personally see a need to complicate things. Less having to work with people the better. “No part of the investigation should require your name or association via it. If so you’ll be exempt permitting you sign the form.” Hardly be favored by most law enforcement but it should hopefully not impede anything. 

It was a more peculiar case; clearly from the remains that he had ended up accidentally recovering. Made an simple look into an old unsolved case. Get a fair amount of new evidence. Gotten federal attention due to its nature. So far he wasn’t being told to hand it over. Figure take advantage while he could. Gently knocking on the door to the room he’d been directed. 

Brows creased as her eyes squeezed shut, her head shaking almost violently as he spoke.  She’d heard the speech plenty of times before.  From her family, from her doctors in rehab, from her friends, from Gil and all of it- every single centimeter of it meant nothing.  There was nothing anyone could say or do that would change what happened or change the fact that Dani- an undercover detective- was so high that she couldn’t do her job and save a woman literally six inches away.

“Don’t…please just…don’t.”

So it wasn’t the best but really how else did you respond? Assuming responding had been right in the first place. Considering over all his own unspeakable terrors. “Okay well it was a shitty situation, how it’s framed aside.” Didn’t get why shared. But knew that even considering it was rough by itself. Silent for a moment as he thought. “Plus you don’t owe anybody it, or an explanation.”
