so my brother was telling me about this human resources certification he attended a while ago. in a panel, the panelist asked a bunch of people in attendance, âwho here knows if an applicant for a job is right for it in under 60 seconds?â
hands shot up around the room, people smug about their ability to âweed out the riff-raffâ when it came to hiring for their fortune 500.
âyou should all be fired and probably in jail,â they said, waiting for the whole room to get uncomfortable, then continued, âbecause the only things you can really learn about a human being in under 60 seconds are all things that are fueled by prejudices and biases covered by american law. so now, i will teach you how to stop being racist, sexist, judgmental assholes and hire people that will better your company of employ.â
I need this to be force taught at all companies
This is a good example of why study after study after study has shown that discrimination against racialized people looking for work is very real.  Oh, and donât get too smug if youâre not in the USA - similar studies have shown that the same shit happens in Canada, Germany, the UK, Sweden  - basically in every country you can think of.Â

i had a discussion today with a friend who was genuinely trying to understand why people are working so hard to ID the charlottesville nazis and contact their employers. âbut wonât that just make them more desperate and violent?â they asked. âif they get fired from their jobs or kicked out of school? if they think they have nothing to lose?â
and i said, âi donât know. maybe. but right now, these motherfuckers think they can be nazis on the weekend.â
like, i somewhat understood my friendâs hesitance re: doxxing, because doxxing is so often a tool of evil. but these motherfuckers think they can show up to a white supremacist rally on saturday where people got fucking murdered by white supremacists, and then on monday they can go back to the IT desk and log into outlook and answer their fucking office phone. they think they can show up to a rally on saturday with a shield and a helmet and beat black teenagers with fucking sticks in a parking garage, and on monday they can be back on campus, taking notes in accounting. these putrid pieces of human garbage think they can be nazis all weekend, and then on thursday they can go to the professional development workshop with the department and enjoy those brownies that diane brought in.
no. no, they fucking cannot.
if you want to be a goddamned weekend nazi, you have to be a nazi every goddamned day. you want to be a weekend nazi? then you face the fucking music on monday, you cowardly piece of shit. you go ahead and live in a world where your hatred of other people means nobody wants to hire you, work with you, live with you, break bread with you; you hateful fuck. you get to suffer the natural consequences of your belief in the lesser humanity of others. you get to live the outcome of your violence, your acts of bigotry. you get to live your ugly truth, alone.

i love how white people assume that people of color have to overanalyze media to find its racism. âjust enjoy it!â they say, like weâre not going to notice a portrayal of our âinferiorityâ being rubbed in our face. âi miss the good old days when social justice warriors didnât ruin every movie/tv show ever,â like pointing out racism ruins the media and not the racism itself. itâs the epitome of white privilege.
I also want to point out that the âgood old daysâ was before the Internet, so any criticisms that ppl had about shows wasnât as public as they are now. Before the Internet, ppl wrote directly to studios & etc. Which, by the way, is completely different from what ppl do now. Nowadays, criticism is public and is hard to avoid.
To say that ppl didnât have criticisms of how race was portrayed in media before the Internet is ignorant and shows that you donât understand race relations in America.

the point Iâm trying to make here is if youâve handled finances for a company youâre now what i would call a treasurer my g, if youâve done admin work you are now a secretary (or as Iâve put Management secretary)
you help some kid with his homework? youâre a private tutor.
keep your bullets points for the job role as concise and important sounding as possible AND ALWAYS EMPHASIS THAT YOURE A TEAM PLAYER IF YOURE GOING TO WORK IN A TEAM.
go into that interview room and get your story straight the night before and remember that interviews are two way conversatons yes they might be grilling you but at the end of it make sure to grill them BACK. do you have any hesitations about my qualifications? my suitability for the job? any feedback on my cv? how long have you been working at this company? do you like it here? whats the work environment like?
I ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS GET THE SAME FEEDBACK WHEN THEY GET BACK IN TOUCH WITH ME

throughout the interview emphasise that youre about progression, that you want more responsibilities than you did at your previous job, tell them the hours here are more suitable for me than my last ones were, AND WHEN IT COMES TO SALARY NEGOTIATION its all about continuity. tell them again that it boils down to progression. make up a reasonable figure for how much you were paid in your last role (do your research for how much the industry youre applying to or the role youre applying for pays, base it on that) tell them you expect more than you were previously paid. do not give them a figure. progression is your primary focus, tell them if youre progressing youre happy. leave it at that.
LIE THROUGH YOUR TEETH AND GET THAT MONEY
I had an interview yesterday, at the place Iâve been temping, where I busted out the âis there anything about my skills or background that makes you concerned about my fit for this jobâ question for the first time.
Neither of my supervisors had never gotten it before either. They had to think for a while, and then it turned into them telling me how great I am and what they love about me.
This stuff is real. I would also say: none of it is lying. This is taking experience that you normally downplay and write off, and putting it in accurate words theyâll understand.
Itâs hacking the capitalist system. Why ISNâT helping a kid with homework âtutoringâ, when the only thing missing is a paycheck?
Itâs especially important for anyone who isnât a cis white man, because many of us are so thoroughly trained to feel like we are not good enough.
Privilege tells people they can fake it, and that theyâre good enough just as people and can learn the skills on the job. Abuse and oppression tell people they arenât good enough as people and that even their high skills are probably below average, and that unless they had the specific job title or were using certain skills officially, nobody will think it counts.
The goal is to at least fake the confidence of a privileged person, to give the employer a chance at seeing the skills that youâve been trained to undervalue.
I donât like the way op wrote this at ALL. Itâs not lying, excuse me. Please donât make people feel unnecessarily guilty and ashamed because you used the wrong words. Itâs not lying, itâs called Glossing your CV/resume. A more creative and proactive way of writing if you may.Â
You can tutor without a paycheck, of course. You did that, you werenât faking what you did in your experiences. As long as you feel like you lied outright, your body language and the way you speak are going to show. Unless you have done it countless of times that your body is accustomed to it, and by then yes you can call yourself a pro liar. And I know some HR out there are trained or well experienced to observe and know whether you are lying or feeling uncomfortable or unconfident when you are talking. And it will take points off you. How would you feel if you are the HR who has a hunch knowing the applicant is lying even before she/he/they are hired?
Also, unless you are applying to some really small or private companies, most prestigious and large ones already know all these tricks. They would have tons of people tried and asked them those questions you mentioned in order to leave an impression in their mind. Itâs more like basic at this point. Ask these questions show you are genuinely interested in working with them. What you can do, however, is do your research. Look up their news over the past few months, bring some important topics up and they will be wowâed. I guarantee you this.
Writing CV/resume is all strategy, not just absent-mindedly putting down your experiences and skills.
