He needed to call Max. It has been one whole week since his date even spared him a single text. George didn't demand an explanation or an apology given the fact he and Max had just gone on two dates so far. Both of them had been good and there was a hint of another one in the last one too. However , Max had told him that he would contact him but the text never came. So George needed to call him , he needed to know if this thing between them had ended and if Max was another asshole ghosting him just like the other men who he met on the dating app.
With the third ring, Max picked up the call. George was prepared to hear the other manâs voice fill the call but he heard another voice instead.
âHelloâ,the voice felt like that of a child's.
George didn't know how to respond. He said ,â Hello , is this Maxâs phone?â
âYou mean â, the child trailed off, âDaddy ?â
Daddy? George started wondering if Max had a secret family and used him as some side piece. He began speaking again , â Yes ,Is Max your Dad?â
âYes, oh my god you are so silly you don't even know thatâ, the reply came with a hearty laugh.
âWhat's your name dear?â, George asked the kid.
âI am Viola. Who are you ?â,George couldn't help but admire how beautiful the name is.Â
â Hi Violaâ, he made his voice as pleasant as he could, â I am George. Myself and Max are very good friends.âÂ
 âDo you know-â, Viola was beginning another question when suddenly she got interrupted. George heard another voice this time, he was familiar with this one.
âVi I told you not to take calls from Daddyâs phone , didn't I?â, Max spoke to his daughter. Then there was a shift in the noise. George guessed maybe the phone was brought to another room .
âHiâ, the familiar voice spoke again, âsorry , it was-â
It was Georgeâs time to interrupt now. He said , âI know. Viola is your daughter . Were you using me as a side piece Max ? Then you suddenly realised whatever you are doing is wrong , so you ghosted me . Well let me tell you , you are doing wrong to both parties by being dishonest.âÂ
George said everything in a single breath .
âI am guessing by the silence that you are doneâ, Max continued, â I am not using you as a side piece. Viola is my daughter, yes. However I am a single dad . And I am sorry for ghosting you , I really am but Viola caught the worst case of flu from school. She has been suffering so bad this week that I didn't even remember to shoot you a text. I am sorry for that George but I promise I will make it up to you â
The other end of the line went silent now.
âGeorge?â , Max asked , now worried that maybe his daughter will become a deal breaker.
âI am sorry tooâ, George finally broke his silence, â for assuming the worst.But why didn't you tell me earlier that you have an adorable daughter?â
âI was kind of scared , I haven't dated since the last six years. I don't know how to say it on the first or second date .â,Max finally said what was so deep in his chest.
âWell , you told me that you would make it up to me , right?â , George said with an enthusiastic tone, â then let me meet her ,she doesn't even have to know we are dating , I already said to her that I am your friend.âÂ
Max thought for a second. George playing with Viola, the image was adorable in his mind. He said , âFine.â
