So Sam is the emphatic one? He’s the one who is treating Jack with care and respect? (If we ignore the fact that he wants to use Jack to get Mary back..)

How come he is so incapable of showing empathy to Dean? How can he not see how his own brother is hurting?

Because Dean and Sam might have lost the same people, but they did not suffer the same loss.

And I just don’t understand how Sam is so cold about Dean’s pain. How?

Because I don’t think Sam really sees Dean as a whole person, just what role Dean is supposed fulfil in Sam’s life.

Watching the early seasons just makes me sad. Seeing how Dean was so perky and flirty and goofy. Breaking into Sam's house and making him think he's a burglar or worse and jumping him just to spook him.

In these later seasons you just know that's not how Dean would do things. If Sam left the lifestyle and moved in with a new Jess, Dean would feel extremely betrayed and lash out aggressively, like he has been doing for nearly every event in recent seasons.

It's just sad to see his character eroding away.
