They’re one of the most unique birds we see this time of year. With their long, flexible bill and eyes set high on their head, woodcocks are built to probe soft soil for earthworms…not to navigate neighborhoods, roads, and windows. Right now is peak spring migration in Massachusetts, and that means we start seeing more of them grounded, stunned, or unable to fly. They travel at night and often at low altitudes, which unfortunately makes them very prone to window strikes and collisions. This particular bird is not thin, which is important as many migrating birds come in emaciated, but this one appears to be in decent body condition. That shifts our concern more toward possible trauma, rather than starvation. Every spring, these birds pass through our area on an incredible journey north. Most people never notice them, but when something goes wrong, they end up needing help. We are happy to be here to help him along his way.
