Sometimes people think they're dealing with a Torment Nexus but what they actually have is a Jumanji. And sometimes people think something's a Jumanji but oops it's a Torment Nexus.
Now. Sometimes you have a third thing- you'll have yourself a Willy Wonka's Chocolate Factory. And buddy, I can't help you there.
So a Torment Nexus is something that is either a metaphor for a larger societal problem (e.g. The Platform, The Long Walk) or a social issue/trend taken to an exaggerated extreme (e.g. The Purge), with a lot of shades of grey in between (e.g. Squid Game). If it isn't about a larger societal issue/trend/structure it isn't a Torment Nexus.
A Jumanji can be dangerous and high-stakes (to the characters), but it doesn't need to have a metaphor or lesson, it can easily just be a "Would this be fucked up or what?" situation (e.g. a lotta Goosebumps stories). If there IS a lesson/metaphor, it will be on a smaller scale like psychological issues (e.g. Magnus Archives), family/relationship issues (e.g. Zathura), or about a specific topic (e.g. Magic School Bus). Large-scale social issues may be present (after all, Everything Is Political), but they take a definite backseat.
Now. A Willy Wonka's Chocolate Factory is a trap based around morality and vices. These can be cultural, religious, or bonkers bullshit like "children shouldn't chew gum." There is generally not discussion or criticism of this morality system. Regardless of the morality system used, if it's not a trap, it's not a Chocolate Factory.
examples of a willy wonkas chocolate factory include:
saw
the cabin in the woods
labrynth (1986)

I'm volunteering for a literary journal right now and there's two things I think you all should know.
1. Most people that submit to literary journals are cis white men. We know this because our journal has an anonymous survey about demographics for people that submit.
2. Most things that get submitted to the creative non fiction section are on the level of middle school "What I did over the summer" essays.
I cannot see the demographics of the people whose essays I'm reading, but guys, if you are wondering if you should submit your work to a literary journal or not, I promise you that just in terms of statistics there are a lot of mediocre cis white men and people in general confidently submitting weird crap that isn't literature to literature magazines. Do it. Submit your work. Please. If you want there to be more diversity in literature, be the diversity. Do it. Do it do it do it.
In general literary magazines want to include more diversity, but if poc, queer people, disabled people, etc. don't submit their work then they aren't gonna get more diverse because we just won't have the material necessary to get more diverse. Submit your work. Do it. Do it. Do it do it do it.
Here's a list of university run literary journals. Do it. Get published.
Many indie lit mags also welcome works from BIPOC and LGBTQIA creatives because the editorial staff themselves are in that demographic. Quarantine brought on the start of the SO many indie lit mags - itās almost a golden age. Donāt be afraid to submit ā there will always be so many niches and aesthetics that one will bound to be the one that fits your style.Ā
There is so much work from marginalized narratives in litmags these days ā people lament there is no representation in media, but that disregards the progress and diversity of the works of editors and writers who help make these litmags possible.Ā
There is representation, and it is flourishing. They are waiting to be read.Ā
The Lumiere Review compiles a list of submission opportunities every month, and it are always very useful:Ā
https://lumierereview.com/sub-sep-oct-2021
List of Litmags that Specifically Look for Work from Marginalized Creators or is Run by Marginalized Creators:
Warning Lines:Ā https://warninglines.com/

Giving Room Magazine:Ā http://www.givingroommag.com/
The Bitchinā Kitsch:Ā https://www.talbot-heindl.com/
Tealight Press:Ā https://www.tealightpress.com/
Tipping the Scales:Ā https://www.tippingthescalesjournal.co.uk/
The Winnow Magazine:Ā https://www.thewinnowmagazine.com/
perhappened:Ā https://www.perhappened.com/
AZE Journal:Ā https://azejournal.com/
Honeyfire Lit:Ā https://honeyfirelit.com/
and so much more!!
(And even if some litmagsā mission statement isnāt specifically for marginalized creators, they will always welcome these narratives.)
So please, please submit!
Independent magazines are great too! Iām more familiar with the university journal scene so I appreciate this addition.
hello, thisĀ is a list of asian literary journals!! it emphasizes south-east asian journals, but thereās a few from other regions as well
I worked on a literary journal for a semester (degree requirement but HIGHLY valuable experience as a writer) and the amount of mediocre white men who submitted was staggering. one guy submitted four poems about various famous hot women then a fifth about his hemorrhoids. I promise you (yes, you!) reading this that you can do better than that!
I hate that Iām always trying to find cool biology themed stuff to wear but all the ānature inspiredā clothing companies just have like two crossed arrows or a minimalistic mountain on a sweatshirt. Fucking lame, thatās barely even nature-adjacent. Put the life cycle of a salamander on a jacket, put hyena skeleton patterns on leggings, put a damn field guide of birds of prey on a peacoat and THEN you can have my money. Do NOT give me a shirt with a leaf on it that says āstay wildā or some bullshit I would much prefer clothing that broadcasts to everyone around me how many teeth an adult Jaguar has or how some pitcher plants can catch and digest rats.
recommendations from the notes :)
studio 252MYA (paleontology)
ray troll's webstore (surrealist fish designs)
liberty graphics t-shirts (biology/dinosaurs)
present indicative (science-themed clothing + home items)

One day I would like to make clothing that fits this genre, but I am a full time student and I have a job (among other commitments) so thatās probably not gonna happen soon aha. Also Iām not sure how much I really want to deal with being āmarketable.ā But I may or may not make my own nature apparel one day :)
Okay so Iām an elementary school art teacher right, and I have this really fun game I made a PowerPoint for to teach like, emotions and intent and looking at the whole picture to first grade.
The idea is, when we count down and change slides, kids have to mimic one thing in the painting as best they can, whether itās animate or inanimate. If thereās nothing in the shot for them to mimic (because I threw some contemporary abstract stuff in), they have to show me how the painting makes them feel. Easy enough, gets them excited to move around and vocal about their feelings regarding art, itās very chaotic. I can tell pretty fast whoās got the emotional maturity to mimic things in a complex way, and whoās just enough of an abstract thinker to mimic inanimate objects early on in the game...
So the first picture is this:
Napoleon Crossing the Alps. My favorite reactions are usually the kids who pretend to be the freaked-out horse, but 2 memorable occasions were the one where a student immediately scrunched up to be the rock in the foreground, and the one where a pair of girls, without any communication on their parts, decided to be Napoleon riding the horse with one as Napoleon and one as the horse. Basically one of them fully tackled the other apropos of nothing, it was hilarious
Iāll add more if yāall want or if I feel like it lol I have a bunch of stories from this one game
Okay so later in the lineup we get to DalĆās Persistence of Memory, which is very funny because itās preceded by several pieces that have like, obvious people in them, so everyoneās gotten a bit complacent in their mimicry
In case youāve forgotten, this is Persistence:
And I swear every time, thereās a beat right before everyone either becomes a tree by t-posing for their life, or goes boneless like some kind of child-shaped pancake over the nearest flat surface
Highlights from this one include a pair who decided to drape themselves pancake-style over the same desk and banged heads, resulting in 2 ground pancakes, and someone who fully just stood there staring, and explained that they were expressing the hatred they felt as soon as they saw it
Last installment: one of the pictures is The Scream, and everyone very quickly just makes a š± face, but then we get to talk about my favorite āthrow spaghetti at the wallā topic, why is he screaming? (The answer is Existential Dread, but itās not appropriate to tell 1st graders that so instead we all put out other ideas lol)
In case you havenāt looked at it recently, this is The Scream:
My favorite guesses from the kids to Why Is He Screaming:
-those guys behind him are going to arrest him
-he missed his boat and itās one of the ones in the background, he just noticed
-the skyās all wiggly
-he just wanted to scream
-HE CAN SEE THE CLASS OF FIRST GRADERS LOOKING AT HIM AND HE DOESNāT LIKE IT
Children are bonkers
Sometimes weāre unsatisfied with a thing we made because when it only existed in our head, we saw all the things it could have been and when itās done we know all the things that it isnāt, but we canāt see the way it expands into a million new things when someone else unpacks it in their head.

the insane experience of missing a fictional character . like you can always go back and reread the book , replay the game , rewatch the show or movie , you can always go back & see them , but you can never experience them & their story for the first time again . its absurd to miss them because they'll always be there , but you'll miss when there were still new things for them to say .
for a small time they were real & growing and changing and you hung onto every new word, but now all they can do is repeat the same story forever&ever & they're not real anymore because you know everything they're going to do. & you miss them. its fucked man...
after eight years, I finally updated my huge Historical Fashion Reference & Resources Doc! Now in the form of a MUCH more easily updated Google Doc with better organization, refreshed links, and five more pages of books and online resources.
I know tumblr hates links, but itās worth it for a doc that I can now update with far more regularity going forward!Ā RIP to the original, you did your duty for far longer than you should have. ššš¼
