Knowing your interest in history, do you have any recommendations for a book on Egyptian mythology? My boyfriend loves it, and I'd like to get him a book he can read about their myths, goddesses, and gods. I'm looking for something a little less academic and more like a collection of myths in prose form. Thanks in advance! :)
Sorry for the late response! I don't know if you were hoping to get him a book as a present for the holidays. If so then I've been spectacularly unhelpful and this response will be too late, but I'll answer to the best of my ability anyway. Sorry about that! (Haven't been on tumblr much this month.)
I'm flattered that you consider me a good source to ask for such things. Egyptian mythology is fascinating, but unfortunately it's not a specialty of mine, so I might not be able to provide you with the best answer. I think I understand the kind of thing you're looking for, though, and I looked into it a bit. I can't seem to find something that fits perfectly, but there's still some pretty good options out there. The closest I can find are actually books intended for younger audiences, so if that doesn't bother you then that might be the best direction to go in.
I know you're not going for academic, but if you don't want a children's book there's a few out there on the more academic side of things that he might find interesting for casual reading anyway. To suggest a couple: "Egyptian Mythology: A Guide to the Gods, Goddesses and Traditions of Ancient Egypt" by Geraldine Pinch and "The Complete Gods and Goddesses of Ancient Egypt" by Richard H. Wilkinson.
If you move towards things intended for a younger audience there's the Puffin Classics "Tales of Ancient Egypt" by Roger Lancelyn Green. I'm not sure how good it is, but it's probably the closest to a casual reading collection of myths in prose form that I can find and seems fairly popular with adults too. There's also "Gods and Pharaohs from Egyptian Mythology" (World Mythology Series) by Geraldine Harris (if you don't mind the brightly colored cover that screams "kid's book!") And then there's "Ancient Egypt: Tales of Gods and Pharaohs" by Marcia Williams. This one's told partially in comic strip form with text bubbles and humorous illustrations. It actually looks quite entertaining. I would read it. But maybe that's just me... Haha.
There's a decent list of recommendations with explanations that might be helpful to you here.
If anyone who knows more about these things than I do would like to throw out some recommendations, disagree or provide more information/thoughts on the ones I've listed above please do!
I hope that helps. :)
