āThatās dismally ironic. Iām sorry to hear it.ā She paused for a moment, āOut of curiosity, what did you make? You might see if you could find a meal center nearby to donate it to.ā
Ā Victoria huffed. "Lemonand-leek-roasted Cornish hen on arugula with fennel. Family recipe," she noted, "that probably won't survive the trip. Shame, really. Took me all bloody day, and all." Ā She looked at her watch. Eleven-thirty, Jonathan had said. It was just past seven. "I don't suppose you have plans for dinner, do you? I'm a stickler for not wasting food."
Ā "Figures; theĀ oneĀ occasion I prepare an elaborate meal is the day my husband calls to say he's working late. These leftovers aren't going to keep."
victorism:
Ā Victoria refuses to touch a single drop of alcohol, however small, under any circumstance. Ā Even the smell of it brings to mind the darker, dingier memories of her childhood, and Victoria is petrified that even a glass of wine with dinner will catalyze a downward spiral. Ā She drank a glass of champagne at her wedding, at the insistence of Jonathan's father. Not fifteen minutes later she was in the bathroom, scrubbing at her mouth until her gums bled.Ā
18/05 20.18:
Ā Oh, I donāt really think our ruckus is quite so dignified. I may be from the⦠posh side of town, but my flatmates certainly arenāt; theyāve taught me a thing or two about the āpeasantā lifestyle and Iād be foolish to say Iāve not participated in as many raucous events as I have formal ones. Typically the gatherings being held in our penthouse are not of the elegant nature. Ā Itās never too late to move, you know. You would, of course, have to get in touch with Mr. Minola, which, as we previously discussed, is not easy to do.
18/05 20:27:
Ā We don't hear you, so no harm done. Besides, I'm Irish; debauchery's in my blood, as it were, and I'm all too familiar with that 'peasant' life for it to rub me too far the wrong way anymore. Must be awfully glamorous up there, living like a king and partying like a peasant. Even the inevitable mess must be glazed in a layer of charm.Ā
Ā I'll leave him a note in a time capsule. He'll unearth it eventually.

Katie McGrath for InStyle (2013).
18/05 19.01:
Ā Weāre all the way up in one of the penthouses, I doubt youād be able to hear us. The only time Iād ever consider that a possibility is when weāre hosting parties, but even that isnāt so often that weād be any sort of a nuisance. Ā (It definitely sounds like some sort of euphemism. While I donāt think my girlfriend and I are anywhere near ready for marriage, I do think Iād get quite the dirty look if I were to try and baby her like that; I donāt think our relationship would last very long if it was based on that sort of idea, anyway.)
Ā The wood flooring is lovely in this building, itād be such a shame to rip those up just to find nothing ā assuming, of course, that there is nothing. That would be quite the surprise, wouldnāt it? Though, I can assure you: if you do happen to find a dismembered body hidden beneath your floorboards, I certainly wasnāt the one to put it there. Unless, of course, you meant a nasty surprise in regards to me⦠in which case, Iām unable to quell your worries. I donāt think thereās such a twist about me.
18/05 19:40:
Ā Well you're certainly not beneath our floorboards, that's for sure; you're a good few floors above us. I think anyone who lives in any penthouse has an unspoken writ to make all the noise they wish, given that it's usually classy. Glasses clinking, pheasants being shot and plucked, rowdy artsy types contemplating life. Ā I knew we should have looked into one. Perhaps I can coerce Mr Macbeth into stretching a little further towards the heavens. He's worth it.Ā
18/05 18.35:
Ā Perhaps, though their hygienic tendencies certainly arenāt my business. It would explain the smell, though. Oh, Iām not entirely sure about that. They certainly like to make their presence known when itās convenient. Weāve been living together long enough ā two years in this building, three years total ā for me to have grown used to it by this point, though. Ā (Iām afraid Iāve no experience in regards to what husbands are like. Iāll take your word on that one.)
Ā I hardly think foresightās got anything to do with it, I just know that Iād be going bloody mental after a few hours of hearing the dripping nonstop. Think The Tell-tale Heart⦠or, maybe you shouldnāt. The last thing youād need with an over-active imagination is thinking thereās a beating heart in the floorboards.
18/05 18:40:
Ā You, sir, are a veteran, and I'm sure we all thank you for your service, Queen and country. There're a few rambunctious lots in the building, though, aren't there? So yours could be any one of them. Not that I mind the noise for the overall niceness of the flats, but I certainly don't miss it. Ā (My word is my bond: enter wedded bliss at your own risk. You'll be forever carving his meat for him. That didn't sound quite right, did it?)
Ā And thank you for fueling my paranoia. I'll add it to my task list tomorrow: check all floors for festering organs. You might be a veteran, but we're still fairly fresh. I'm still waiting for some nasty surprise.
18/05 10.12:
Ā Mm, Iād take that as theyāll be round closer to four. That always seems to be the situation with those āflexibleā schedules. Perhaps you should consider putting on the telly or some music, it might help a bit. I imagine the constant dripping could drive just about anyone mad.
Ā Iāve got two gremlins of my own, really, but theyāre technically my flatmates. Itās amazing really, their capability to rarely ever show their faces yet make such a mess of things around the house. And I wouldnāt even entertain the thought of feeding them after midnight. Thatās just asking for trouble.
18/05 16:12:
Ā I suppose they avoid getting wet, too? My experiencees with communal living would suggest as much. But at least this way, you have the impression of having the place to yourself. Housemates are shite. Ā (Mind you, husbands aren't much better.)
Ā Right again, two for two. Clearly you've been blessed with the gift of foresight, and I reallyĀ am going mad. Everything appear to be in working order, except my wild and fanciful imagination.Ā

18/05 09.57:
Ā Iād be lying if I said Iād ever done a stitch of handiwork in my life, but I could take a look. I doubt itād do any good, really, considering Iāve no idea what Iād be looking at ā Iād probably make things worse, in all honesty ā but alas.
Ā Actually, now that I think about it⦠I donāt think Gemma, the secretary, gets in until ten. Perhaps thatās why youāve not got an answer. And, I donāt think the building is crumbling to bits at the moment; hopefully you donāt have to set the Gremlin traps for a while yet.
18/05 10:08:
Ā Ha! Contact! Finally. You were right. Apparently someone's going to look at it "between 11 and 4". Good thing 'Nothing' cancelled on me for the day, and I can spend it all listening to the bloody dripping. Ā Too bad, really. Gremlins might've been nice company. Like children you never see, because they're candid about taking and breaking things.
18/05, 09.48:
Ā Have you tried calling downstairs? Usually the woman at the front desk can help more quickly than Mr. Minola can. Apparently, heās incredibly busy.
Ā Perhaps itās a leak instead of a faulty tap. They do sound similar sometimes, and it makes sense that a leak is a possibility if youāve checked all the faucets already.
18/05 9:53:
Ā Know your pipe sounds, do you? You're welcome to come and look at it all. Saves me calling a plumber, since it appears I'm not cut out for it.
Ā And I've rung about a dozen times downstairs, but I'm not getting any answer. First the plumbing, then the phone; next it'll be the heating, or the oven, and I'll have to resign myself to setting Gremlin traps.Ā
Sounds supernatural. As for getting him anywhere, it takes quite a bit - and Iām his daughter. Did you ask your neighbors? Who knows maybe theyāre playing tricks on you.
Ā His daughter? Well, you must know what might sway him, then. I've found most men have a point of persuasion, or a pressure point, as it may be. Usually it's the promise of food.Ā Ā But I won't dismiss any notion of the supernatural. I've tightened every single nut and bolt in the bloody apartment.Ā
Ā I don't believe I caught your name, did I?
05/18 9:34am:
Ā I swear, Iām going mad. I can hear a faucet dripping from all the way in the bedroom, but not a single one seems faulty. Ā What does it take to get the superintendent up here?
