• You know you don't have to keep checking on me, right? I'm fine. • How are you? Wait, did I ask that already? • I don't know what I'd do without you. I mean that. • Oh, God. I thought something happened to you. Don't scare me like that. • You're not alone in this. You know that, right? • We're family. That's what we do. We show up. • Make yourself at home, okay? This is your place too now. • Get out of here with that. You're not a burden. Don't ever say that again. • Is there anything you need? Food? A blanket? Someone to just sit with you? • So, what's next for us? • I have to admit there's a small part of me that's terrified you'll wake up one day and realize you don't need me anymore... that you'll leave. • It's just... I've never had this before. People who stay. • Why are you still here? I mean, you could go anywhere. Be with anyone. • I know I'm not easy to deal with. But thank you. For staying anyway. • [Name], I don't know what I'm doing half the time, okay? But I know I'm not doing it without you. • I don't really know where else I'd want to be, except right here. • You're the best thing that ever happened to me, you know that? • I really think you saved my life. Not dramatically. Just... by being here. • Hey. Bad dream? Come here. I've got you. • You don't owe me anything. This is what family does • Stop apologizing. You're allowed to need help. • I made your favorite. Thought you could use some comfort food today. • You look exhausted. When's the last time you actually slept? • I'm not going anywhere. You're stuck with me, remember? • We've been through worse. We'll get through this too. • You don't have to be strong all the time. Not with me. • I brought you something. It's stupid, but it made me think of you. • Come on. Let's get you home. • You matter to me. More than you know. • I've got your back. Always have, always will. • You're shaking. Here, take my jacket. • I know you're scared. It's okay to be scared. • You did good today. Really good. • I'm proud of you. I don't say that enough. • Stop pushing me away. I'm not leaving. • You think I'd let you face this alone? Not a chance. • I'll stay up with you. I don't mind. • You're safe here. I promise. • Tell me what you need. Anything. • You don't have to pretend with me. • I trust you. Completely. • You've got this. And if you don't, we've got this. • I'd do anything for you. You know that, right? • You're not too much. You're never too much. • This is your home now. For as long as you want it. • I'll fight for you if you can't fight for yourself right now. • You make me want to be better. A better person. • I chose you. I keep choosing you. Every day. • You're allowed to fall apart. I'll hold the pieces until you're ready.
There is something about Shiba that makes him a bit odd among Reapers. A warmth that his presence carries, not only in his attitude. The space around him grows warmer as Shiba occupies it, as if he carries a miniature sun in his breast.
Usually, the dead are cold, or at least cool. But never Shiba. Perhaps it was his own latent ability, he had sometimes joked. A useless one that wouldn't help him ascend the ranks. But it was his.
"Hmmm..." Shiba taps his chin a bit playfully as he watches Neku's eyes dart around and his cheeks beginning to grow pink in response to his flirting. So, Neku was able to at least pick up on what he was putting down. And he can easily detect his embarrassment.
Oh, how it makes his heart burn. How cute, how adorable Shibuya's shining star is. He leans over a little closer, a chuckle resounding through his chest. It makes him want to play with him even more, just to see that beautiful color deepen. He wants to know just how red Neku can get.
"All right, Neku. I'll extinguish the Legendary Player part just for you," he chuckles quietly, his smile only growing.
Shiba leans back away from Neku, giving him the space he assumes the ex-Player probably wants. But, that doesn't mean he's going to shut his mouth and let the silence grow alongside the space. Oh no, there's more that the ex-Conductor of Shibuya wants to say.
"So, you wouldn't happen to be opposed to nicknames, would you? I think that friend of yours calls you 'Phones', doesn't he? Or is that just a Beat-exclusive right?"
Even when his eyes fix onto anywhere but the flame-licked gold in front of him -- Neku is sure that the burn that settles under his skin is only a flicker in comparison to the bonfire named Shiba. When he leans closer, Neku's jaw only tightens -- just before he scoffs in lieu of the words which trickle after the blatant interest in his reaction.
"Thanks," he says -- a gruff sound accompanied by a hand subconsciously rubbing against his shoulder.
When Shiba leans away, Neku visibly relaxes just that little bit to suggest that his nerves were high-strung -- a rare sight in its own for his otherwise calm nature. 'Just great,' he can't help but think, 'he probably thinks I hate him or something.'
It's a gullible notion that's squandered in seconds.
"...You've got the wrong impression there," he says -- rolling his shoulder before he can finally return eye contact, "Phones is sort of a longtime thing. He's not the only one who calls me that."

Shiba smiles at Neku, his eyes warm as he looks at one of his many saviors. Not that he’d be able to admit it out-loud, not with his pride weighing him down. But, he truly was grateful to those Twisters. He… well, thanks to Tsugumi, he knows exactly what would have happened if he hadn’t come to his senses.
He sighs through his nose, affection filling his chest.
“So, Neku… you really want me to drop the whole Legendary Player schtick?” He can’t keep the smile from twitching at the corner of his mouth. Blond hair falls over his shoulders as he leans forward. His elbow rests on the back the bench the two of them are seated on.
“I’ll try if you want, but it’ll be my toughest challenge yet. Especially when your expression scrunches so very cutely when you hear someone say it. It really warms me when I get to see it.”

Shiba's gaze is not unlike a pyre which knows little of how to taper its flames into something that doesn't burn too quick. It's all golds with him — a heat which could rival that of the sun in its intensity. Neku knows, because he's seen those flames near-extinguished — knows what it means to seek for something to light a match and reignite the spark within you. Shibuya cues him in on it, too — the pale gold twining alongside the deeper gold like an embrace.
That's why Neku is quiet when he watches not only Shiba, but how Shibuya greets him. It's why his gaze is steady in contrast — palm pressed against the cheekbone as his eyes are both focused, and faraway in the same instance.
Shiba speaks first, so Neku perks up just enough to signal he's listening.
"It'd be nice," he murmurs easily — his brow furrowing just enough to signal his distaste for the implication that he was some sort of myth, instead of the living, breathing person sitting just across from Shiba, "I like the life I'm living now, so Neku suits me just fine."
Shiba leans closer then, and Neku remains fixed where he is — only arching a brow. His smile curls into something mischievous; he can tell. At first, Neku thinks he's going to get another one of those annoying propositions as to why Shiba can't seem to let the legend die. Or maybe, Shiba's going to ask him why he fought so hard to come back to the RG, when it's clear his Soul was so intrinsically tied to the UG. Neku's ready to quip back his reasons (which, really, should be so damn simple to get) — his body rigid in tension...
...only to completely slack in surprise.
"—What?"
Now, all of a sudden, he can't seem to hold his gaze at all. He looks everywhere but at Shiba — his eyes darting left, right, before flickering in a downward sweep. His expression twists, and his nose scrunches just as Shiba said it would. Neku looks off to the side — the heel of his palm digging into the swell of his cheek now. The only difference lies in the word he gets fixed on — and it adds a new splash of pink onto the painting Shiba was trying to depict.
"...Whatever. Good for you. So just... get it right."

His chuckle comes sheepish — accompanied by the shop bell's ringing above his head to signal his arrival within the cafe. Neku can't help the way he rubs at his shoulder — letting it roll in an effort to shake off some idle nerves as his smile beams like a crooked painting. It's still just as easy to slink over and find his favorite stool at the edge of the bar, and easier still to beam up at the idol he never stopped admiring.
"I guess it really has been a while, huh?" Neku chuckles, then — letting the bag slung over his shoulder settle on the stool next to him. "Hope you didn't miss me too much."

"Just don't look out the window. Enjoy the pancakes."
" ,,,? Don't look out the..."
"Wait. You seriously got me pancakes?"
"How frigid."
To be fair, he's sort of forgotten about things like time. Shinjuku's state makes it a bit hard to keep track.
But now that he's not in Shinjuku... he can actually check his phone and see something aside from arcane, unknowable symbols. So he does, and then...
"Neku.... did you just wake up? The sun set a few hours ago."
Neku can only scoff, then, waving his hand as a means to dismiss his own disgruntled response. He takes the time to stretch his arm over his head — legs sticking out from where he comes to a rise.
Shiba's concern, on the other hand, comes to a rise in lieu of Neku's lack thereof. He only blinks once, before he huffs — the same arm once outstretched now accompanying the hand which rubs against the back of his neck.
"That right...?" A chuckle. "Wow. I must've conked out."
"Well! Good morning, darling. Breakfast is ready, the birds are singing, and time doesn't matter anymore."
"...Either it's the morning, or you're pulling a fast one by giving me pancakes at midnight."
"I suppose I ought to welcome the Legendary Player back from his Legendary Nap."
"...And you're telling me everything but the time."

"Anyone got the time? I feel like I've slept like the dead."
The pleasant breeze in Miyashita’s air caught her auburn fringe, the otherwise peaceful atmosphere making their exchange seem almost trivial, benign—though things between them could never be simple.
His touch is feather-light, a sedative in both how it calms and dulls her—reminding her fully that he’s real, he’s here, and just as much, how he could disappear all over again. Unable to resist the very true feeling of his caress, she nuzzles her cheek to his hand, like a puppy waiting for an owner that won’t return. Before she even realized it, phantom tears turn painfully corporeal, rather on account of his word, and the droplets gather in her ducts. Ever her partner, ever her savior, he catches them before they can rain from her cheek to his.
His oath makes her happy. And it makes her sad.
As he leaned back, her gaze befell his, and he had that look in his eye, a look of determination that not even God himself could best, as previously proven… but Shiki also knew there was a tired, burdened boy hiding behind the guise of a legend (if only on account of the insecure little girl—hidden and frail on the receiving end.) From the bottom of her heart, she knows he’d never lie, but whether he likes it or not, for Neku Sakuraba—the lines between trust and death are paper-thin. He's always, always kept his promises, but that didn't make their conditions any less painful.
For a moment, she held him tighter, ultimately relenting to let him go.
“I,” she exhaled, her voice not more than a whisper in the gentle air, “I missed you.” The left half of the bench calls for her as she chose now to sit at his side. She wants to lean on him yet, and her fingertips twitch with the urge to reach out and take his hand, comfort him, hold him, be held, be perfect, be together, be with him—but even just the simple notion of their shared touch makes her fear he might disappear into thin air once again. She curls into herself, holding Mr. Mew tight to her chest, her head lowered to avoid his gaze, “I missed you so much,” she huffs, pitiable and pathetic as her tears only fall thicker, “I didn’t know what to do.”
“I'm... I'm sorry, Neku, but I can't...” Shiki trailed off, sincerity seeping through the tone of her voice, and not in a way that’s cute or charming, but rather destitute, aggressively reliant, broken, because, in the end, she's just become another burden for him to bare, “I can't live in a world that you're not part of."
Though he swears, though he promises... though his words are laced with a fealty that rivals all else, Neku knows that it was near impossible for him not to hurt her. Hurt in itself was the root of them — the very source of the first words they've ever exchanged, and the foundation of what made their bond as deep as it was. Malevolence has never been any further from his heart than it was now, and yet still... Still...
Neku only ever seemed to hurt her.
But that didn't mean he didn't know how to care for her.
When Shiki's embrace comes in a tight twine, Neku's eyes have already closed to accept it. When she pulls away only to bridge their distance in a cold seat she intends to warm, Neku is already crossing that bridge by scooting closer in the wake of her bleeding vulnerability. All this and more, like it was natural — that caring for Shiki Misaki and understanding her was his sworn duty just as it was his greatest desire.
So when Shiki curls into herself, Neku sweeps down with her.
Her tears sever slice after slice within his heart, because though he understood her pain for what it was, it made it no easier to bear witness to the agony she's withheld from the world until this very moment. How many times has she endured this grief alone, while all her friends were roping into bearing an atlas she simply wasn't allowed to bear? Neku wouldn't make her do it, if he had to do it all again, but the stubborn thing about Shiki was that she would want to anyway. Shibuya is equally as stubborn — its music drumming harsh into him like it needed him to understand that Shiki wouldn't want this pain to be another burden for Neku to carry.
But Neku was born stubborn, and he's died stubborn time, and time again.
"—Don't say that."
And it's his turn, now — to act in the span of a single pulse that pulls her into his arms. Neku doesn't think when he does it, and he certainly doesn't think when he squeezes her so tight, that he knows she can feel the way he trembles underneath the weight of her words and hear the strain of his own. What she doesn't see is his wide eyed stare — doesn't feel the way his jaw clenches.
"Don't say that, Shiki."
And in spite of it, it comes gentle — forgiving, even though the wrong has little to do with her character and more to do with the notion that her existence must be tied to his. He's seen it before, because she's suffered it before — first with Eri, then with him (he'll never forget watching her dissipate before his eyes, only to teeter along the fallable bridge of life and death all because he decided to give a damn). Because of that, Neku can never let her do it again.
"I already told you I'm not going anywhere, right...?"
A nestle now, into her shoulder — his face burying into her neck as he sighs with the very same tremble that wracks his frame conjoined with his breath.
"So don't say that. Don't say you need me to live."
Not when she's already fought so, so hard to live for herself.
