Question: What do you get when you go walking with the nature writer Robert Macfarlane and the actor and musician Johnny Flynn on a scorching hot summer’s day in Wandlebury?

Answer: A Neolithic track, an Iron Age fort, a Roman road, a holm oak, cow pats, a mighty avenue of sun-dappled beech, a buzzard, a grasshopper orchestra, a dragonfly, the stories of a mysterious white horse and a dread augury and countless busy, buzzing bees. Oh, and no fewer than six extraordinary songs performed along the way.

“We can’t let COVID win.”

This was my colleague’s mantra when the pandemic started last year. And for the almost 18 months since, health care workers have rallied to the battlefields, even at times when we had no weapons to brandish.

We took care of the infected and the critically ill when no one else would. We reused N95 masks, carefully placing them in labeled brown paper bags in between shifts. We witnessed lonely deaths and held up iPads for families to say their heartbreaking goodbyes. We created elaborate backup schedules and neglected our personal lives. We stepped up during surges and when our colleagues fell ill. Camaraderie in the ICU had never been stronger because we recognized that this was a team effort and all of humanity was battling against a common enemy.

There was even an article on the internet that showed what would be the most realistic Darcy and.. I laugh just imagining how people would react to a short skinny guy with powdered long hair that look white (that article's argument was mostly based on the fact Austen originally set p&p in late 1700 before the powdered hair and wigs became truly out of fashion for younger people. P&P 2005 nods at Austen's original setting for the novel with the Bennet sisters' out of fashion costumes contrasted with Miss Bingley's more regency ones)

Anyway, if you lived at the time Mr Knightley's look in 2020 would be quite normal and for all intents and purposes he just looks like how a proper country gentleman would look. Even some of the oldest drawings made for illustrated versions of Emma depicted him with curly longish hair. He's especially, correctly, contrasted with Frank's more fashionable dandy style overall. For a guy like Mr Knightley who makes fun of Frank for going to London for a haircut, it makes sense he wouldn't fuss over his own hair much. It also makes sense that given he seldom uses a carriage, and he spends most of his time horse riding or walking to places, his hair would reflect his habits and cannot look tidy and perfect in every scene unless you want to imagine him hiding a comb and mirror in his pants and constantly fussing over his hair like John Travolta in "Grease".
