Buck used to be a toon but he's from the mainland, NOT toontown. Buck doesn't know he used to be a toon, he doesn't remember anything before he became a cog (or something close to one, anyway). Brian also used to be a toon, but he remembers everything.

Brian was the successful experiment and Buck was the failure, when they eventually meet back up again at C.O.G.S Brian tries to use the routine maintenance as an excuse to get in and fix Buck so he can be a little more normal and hopefully remember his life from before, but he fucks it up and makes everything worse.

He is obsessed with fixing Buck to an unhealthy degree now, Buck has become more of a project than a person to Brian at this point, this is why they're not allowed to be near each other anymore. Brian's obsession WILL eventually kill Buck if left unchecked, and even for Craig that's too much.

Buck DOES have eyes behind the slot machine, you can see them faintly whenever the screen turns off. (I hc the slot machine is a digital display)

but for stylistic reasons I only ever draw one ☝️

The slot machine feels so much like part of him that any feeling of having eyes is attributed to that

There are many parts of Buck that are still organic, he still has the bones in his arms and legs despite them mostly being metal now. This is what gives them their toony stretchiness. They tried to make it work without the organic component, they really did. It just wouldn't.

I want to clarify here Buck and Brian were NOT experimented on under C.O.G.S, this is PRE-EMPLOYMENT and happened on the mainland!!!

Dave is an eldritch entity living as a cog because it's funny, he's neither toon nor suit, he's just messing around for the love of the game. This is why there's always music following him, how he comes out of the ground like in that cereal comic, why there's no history of him existing outside of cogs besides his friendship with Buck

Truthfully the cog bit wasn't supposed to last this long, but he Knows what Buck is, that's part of why they became friends in the beginning. Dave sticks around because he feels bad that Buck didn't get a choice, he doesn't want to leave him Alone.
