I take about 100, 30 second photos and merge them using a program called star trails. Now, you can do much longer then 30 seconds, but with digital the longer the exposure the more imperfections appear, mainly a thing called hot spots. Think bad noise on hardcore steroids. With film it is a different story. Get a high ISO film, a wide angle lens, open her up, and let it sit outside for a few hours. If you do it away from a road where cars will ruin it, it should come out how you want it
