Iâve been binging Smallville (starting from season 4), trying to get my fix of Lois and Clark. This is the first rewatch Iâve done and Iâm so disappointed with the show. Overall, the quality is actually better than I thought it would be, so donât get me wrong. Iâm just upset about how they treated my girl Lois. The legendary romance I remember watching was mostly the actorsâ insane chemistry. Why bring in Clarkâs endgame in early and continue to drag out the Lana angle, then botch the start of the relationship and give us minimal romance afterwards? I know the plot seems pretty focused on the romance, but it just felt really superficial. The sizzles in season 4, all the banter and foreshadowing in the middle, and yet the relationship itself was written terribly! Some of it has to do with how serious Clark is most of the time, but what happened to the megawatt smiles he had around Lois? Theyâre getting married and the writing is denying them the epic romance that they deserve! Thank god Tom Welling and Erica Durance can sell anything, especially attraction and love.
The show kinda had no idea what to do seasons 4-7. It was meant to be about Smallville and Clark's formative years and Lana being there but by season 4 a lot of factors including staying on air but not be able to end meant they had put her in a holding pattern. Lois was only meant to guest in 3 episodes but they liked her but obviously couldnt proceed and she too was put in a holding pattern. I actually blame the writers for this and it hurt perceptions of both women. Ideally Smallville should have been a 5 season show. 3 Seasons in Smallville, 2 in Metropolis. And I think chemistry was based on what the writers wanted. One relationship was angsty the other was like the show Moonlighting.
